The code alone does not establish a cause. The source could be a Windows screen or a separate program, and the repair depends on which component reported the failure.

- Find the device marked with a warning or otherwise identified as having a problem, then double-click it.
- Open Properties and read the Device status area. Record the exact status message and code; do not assume it is the same issue as a message from another screen.
- Use Microsoft’s listed resolution for the actual Device Manager code, if one is available. Do not apply a fix intended for a different code just because it sounds similar.
- If the code is not covered by Microsoft’s Device Manager list, contact Microsoft Support or the device manufacturer. Include the device name, status text, and any relevant changes or steps that preceded the problem.

A crash or recovery screen needs to be treated according to its full text and the circumstances around the failure. Do not label it a blue-screen error, driver failure, or hardware fault based only on 0x008EC518.
