There is no verified Microsoft definition for the complete hexadecimal value 0x008E50C8. Do not treat it as a diagnosis or buy a “code-specific” repair. The string may be a truncated, application-specific, or otherwise miscopied value. The sequence 0x8E resembles Microsoft Bug Check 0x0000008E, but that resemblance does not identify your failure. The reliable fix is to capture the complete message and context, decode the value, determine whether the failure is a blue screen, application, installer, or event-log error, and then act on the named driver, service, firmware, or hardware evidence.
This guide covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. It puts reversible, Microsoft-supported investigation first and explains when to stop changing settings and escalate with logs or a crash dump.

The exact value 0x008E50C8 has no confirmed Microsoft meaning in the available Windows documentation. A hexadecimal-looking string can be a status code, an application’s private value, a memory address displayed in a message, or a value copied without its leading or trailing parameters. The digits alone are not enough to select a repair.
Microsoft does document Bug Check 0x8E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, whose standard notation is 0x0000008E. Microsoft describes it as a kernel-mode application exception that an error handler did not catch; 0xC0000005 (STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION) is a common exception code associated with that bug check. A message containing 0x008E50C8 is not automatically that bug check. Treat the similarity as a clue to investigate, not as identification.

There is no published prevalence statistic or named component tied specifically to 0x008E50C8. Any page claiming that the value always means one particular driver, virus, registry fault, or hardware part is going beyond the established evidence.
What should I record before trying a fix?
Preserve the evidence while the message is visible. A later restart can remove the only useful details.
- Write down whether the failure was a blue screen, a normal application dialog, an installer or update failure, or an Event Viewer entry.
- Copy the complete hexadecimal value exactly, including leading zeroes, additional parameters, and any text after the code.
- Record the application, setup program, service, or Windows component that was running.
- Copy any file name, driver name, module name, stop-code parameters, event source, event ID, and timestamp.
- Note your Windows edition, build number, computer model, and whether the problem started after a driver, BIOS, application, or hardware change.
- Photograph a blue screen if you cannot copy its text. Do not rely on a shortened code remembered after the reboot.
The extra digits may point to a different subsystem than Bug Check 0x8E. Keeping the full context prevents you from applying a kernel-crash remedy to an unrelated application or setup error.
How can I decode a Windows hexadecimal error?
Decoding translates a value into text; it does not repair the underlying fault. Use one of Microsoft’s documented lookup methods and keep the returned wording with your incident notes.
Use Microsoft Error Lookup Tool
- Obtain Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool from the Microsoft Download Center. The listed release is version 6.4.5, published July 15, 2024.
- Open the tool and enter the complete value, such as
0x008E50C8, exactly as displayed. If the tool expects a numeric form, try the same value without the0xprefix. - Copy the message text it returns. Microsoft describes this utility as displaying the message text associated with a hexadecimal status code.
- If no text is returned, record that result rather than substituting a similar-looking code. An unrecognized value is evidence that more context is needed.
The utility is digitally signed by Microsoft. A successful lookup still identifies only the status text; it does not prove which driver or component caused the event.
Run certutil from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run
certutil -error 0x008E50C8. - Save the output, including an “unknown” or “no error message” result. Try the complete value exactly as shown in the original message if the first lookup does not match.
certutil -error [Code] is a Microsoft-documented decoding option. It is a lookup operation, not a command that changes drivers, the registry, or system files.

Try err.exe when a debugger or support workflow uses it
- Run Microsoft’s Error Code Lookup utility as
err.exe [Code], replacing[Code]with the hexadecimal value. - Compare its text with the Error Lookup Tool and
certutilresults. - Keep the command output with the original event details. If the tools disagree or cannot resolve the value, report all results instead of choosing the most alarming interpretation.
Different tools can understand different code families. A lookup result is useful only when it is paired with the screen, application, event source, and parameters that produced it.
Is 0x008E50C8 a blue-screen or driver error?
Not necessarily. Classify the failure by what you saw, then follow the matching branch below.
| What appeared | What to investigate first | What the code alone cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Blue screen followed by a restart | Crash-dump evidence, Event Viewer, and any named driver or service | That the failure is exactly Bug Check 0x8E |
| Application dialog or application closes | The application name, module or file named in the dialog, and the event record | That a kernel driver caused it |
| Installer or Windows Update failure | The package name, setup log or event source, and the change that preceded the failure | That the hexadecimal value is a universal Windows code |
| Event Viewer entry with no visible crash | Event source, event ID, parameters, timestamp, and nearby warnings | That the event is the root cause rather than a consequence |
If the screen names a file or driver, preserve that name before uninstalling anything. If no component is named, do not guess from the hexadecimal digits.
How do I inspect Event Viewer and crash evidence?
For a suspected kernel crash, inspect evidence before changing settings. Microsoft recommends using the driver name, when present, to identify the component; the !analyze debugger extension can help interpret a dump.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check Event Viewer
- Right-click Start and open Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs and inspect System around the recorded timestamp. Also check Application when an app dialog or crash was involved.
- Filter or sort by the time of the failure. Open entries marked Error or Critical and copy the event source, event ID, general description, and any XML or parameter details.
- Look for a named driver, service, device, or module. Note warnings immediately before the failure, but do not assume every nearby warning is causal.
Inspect a crash dump when Windows created one
Locate the dump associated with the restart and provide it to a qualified support technician or analyze it with Microsoft debugging tools. In a debugger, the !analyze extension can summarize the stop information and often exposes a suspected module. A dump that names a driver is stronger evidence than the bare code; a dump with no reliable module should lead to further testing rather than a forced conclusion.
Do not delete dump files, clear event logs, or use a registry cleaner before copying the evidence. Those actions can remove the information needed to identify the fault.

What should I do if a driver or service is named?
Use the least destructive change that tests the evidence. A driver supplied by the computer or device manufacturer is preferable to an unknown download.
Install a current vendor driver
- Write down the exact device and driver name from Event Viewer or the dump.
- Visit the computer maker’s or device maker’s support page using the model printed on the system or shown in Windows System Information.
- Download the driver intended for your exact Windows edition and hardware revision. Avoid a package that merely has a similar name.
- Create a restore point if your organization’s policy permits it, close open work, and install the package according to the vendor’s instructions.
- Restart and reproduce the original action. Record whether the same event, driver name, or code returns.
Roll back a change that immediately preceded the crash
- Open Device Manager from the Start menu.
- Expand the category for the affected device, right-click the device, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab.
- If Roll Back Driver is available, use it only when the timing and evidence point to that update, then restart and test.
- If rollback is unavailable, use the vendor’s previous known-good package or contact the vendor rather than downloading a random “fix.”
Temporarily disable or remove a suspect service or driver
Do this only when the component is clearly identified and you have a recovery path. Prefer disabling a recently added service or using Safe Mode to undo a change before removing a driver. Record the original setting, and restore it if the test does not change the failure. Removing an unrelated driver can make the device unusable and can destroy the evidence needed for support.

How do BIOS, firmware, and hardware checks fit in?
Microsoft lists faulty drivers, system services, hardware incompatibility, BIOS issues, and memory conflicts among possible causes of 0x8E-class failures. Hardware checks are therefore appropriate when software evidence is inconclusive, when the crash began after a hardware change, or when failures occur across several unrelated applications.
Check BIOS and firmware safely
- Identify the exact computer or motherboard model and current BIOS version in the manufacturer’s support information or firmware setup screen.
- Read the manufacturer’s release notes and instructions. Install only firmware supplied for that exact model and revision.
- Use stable power, disconnect unnecessary peripherals, and do not interrupt the update. If your organization manages the device, follow its change-control process.
- After the restart, check whether the original event recurs and keep the previous BIOS version and update date in your notes.
Verify newly installed hardware
Power down and follow the manufacturer’s service instructions before reseating or removing internal parts. Confirm that the device is compatible with the computer and Windows edition. If the error began immediately after an adapter, memory module, storage device, or other component was installed, test with the previous configuration when that can be done safely.
Run the manufacturer’s diagnostics
Use the computer maker’s built-in or downloadable hardware diagnostics, especially its memory scanner. Microsoft specifically recommends the system maker’s memory diagnostics for this class of failure. Record the test name, date, result, and any diagnostic code; a failing result is a reason to contact the manufacturer rather than repeatedly reinstalling Windows drivers.
What if the error appears only in one application?
A single-application dialog is not proof of a kernel fault. Capture the application version, plug-ins, file being opened, and the complete dialog text. Check the application’s own event or crash log and Event Viewer’s Application log for a module or file name.

Undo the most recent application or plug-in change first. If the application vendor supplies an update or repair procedure for the named module, follow that procedure. Do not replace a DLL with a copy from an unrelated website: the file may be version-specific, digitally signed, or tied to other components. If the same hexadecimal value appears in unrelated applications or during boot, return to the system, driver, BIOS, and hardware branches rather than treating each app separately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if Windows keeps restarting with this value?
Repeated restarts make evidence collection urgent. Photograph the stop screen, note whether a driver name appears, and use the next successful boot to copy Event Viewer entries and any dump. If a recently installed driver or service is strongly implicated, use Safe Mode to roll back or disable that component before attempting normal startup.
When the machine cannot stay running long enough to collect evidence, disconnect nonessential peripherals and use the manufacturer’s recovery or diagnostic environment only as directed by its documentation. Avoid deleting drivers or resetting Windows until the dump, event details, and recent-change history have been preserved; a reset can remove the clues that distinguish a driver problem from a hardware incompatibility.
When should I stop troubleshooting and escalate?
Escalate when the value remains unresolved, the crash returns after a vendor driver rollback or update, diagnostics report a fault, or the system cannot boot reliably. Give support a compact evidence package:

Microsoft Support is appropriate for Windows stop-code and dump interpretation. The computer or device manufacturer is the better escalation point for BIOS, firmware, memory, and model-specific diagnostics. Do not buy a generic registry utility or delete system files solely because the hexadecimal value looks unfamiliar.
How should I choose the next test when the evidence is incomplete?
Use the most specific, reversible test available. This prevents a broad change from obscuring the cause.
Best Value
| Evidence available | Best next action | Why it is proportionate |
|---|---|---|
| A dump names a driver | Check the vendor version, then update or roll back that driver | The change directly tests the named component |
| A crash follows a BIOS or hardware change | Check compatibility, revert the change when safe, and run manufacturer diagnostics | Timing and hardware evidence support a targeted test |
| Only one application fails | Inspect that application’s module and logs | The failure context does not yet implicate the kernel |
| Only the hexadecimal string is known | Capture the full message and decode it | There is not enough evidence to select a repair |
| Several unrelated apps and devices fail | Prioritize system, firmware, memory, and hardware diagnostics | A shared component becomes more plausible than one app |
Keep a dated record of every change. If a test alters the symptom, that result is useful evidence even when it is not a permanent fix.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a hexadecimal error code be a memory address instead of a Windows status code?
Yes. Some dialogs print addresses, parameters, or application-defined values in hexadecimal notation. That is why the complete message, named module, event source, and timestamp matter more than interpreting the digits in isolation.
Should I send the entire crash dump to a support technician?
Ask the technician what format and transfer method they require before sharing it. Dumps can contain system and application details, so use the vendor’s or Microsoft’s official support channel and retain an untouched copy for your records.
Why do different lookup tools sometimes return no message?
Windows contains multiple code families, and a private application value may not exist in Microsoft’s public message tables. An unknown result is not evidence that the computer is infected or that the code has a hidden universal meaning; it means the originating component must be identified.
Is there a published success rate for fixing 0x008E50C8?
No credible prevalence or success-rate statistic specific to this complete value has been established. Outcomes depend on whether the underlying cause is a driver, service, firmware incompatibility, memory problem, or an application-specific failure.
