Error 0x008DE222 has no code-specific explanation in the Microsoft guidance identified for this issue. That means the code alone does not establish whether Windows, an app, Windows Update, or OneDrive produced it. The right fix depends on what you were doing when it appeared: first record that context, then follow the matching troubleshooting path below. The steps apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10 where noted.
What does error 0x008DE222 mean?
The available Microsoft installation and OneDrive guidance does not identify 0x008DE222 as a documented error code. There is therefore no supported, code-specific fix to recommend, and it would be misleading to label it a OneDrive, hardware, or Windows Update error without knowing where it appeared.

In practice, the key clue is the event that immediately preceded the message: an installation or upgrade, a Windows Update attempt, a OneDrive sync, or something else. Start with the section that matches that event rather than applying every fix in sequence.
What should I check before changing Windows?
Record the error’s context and protect your files before troubleshooting. This gives you a baseline to share with support and reduces the chance of making a separate problem harder to diagnose.

- Note your Windows version and recent changes. Include whether you use Windows 11 or Windows 10, any recent update number you can identify, and whether you recently changed drivers, security software, or connected hardware.
- Back up important personal files. This is especially important before Windows Update troubleshooting or any broader repair work.
- Remove nonessential peripherals. Disconnect external drives, USB devices, printers, docks, and other hardware you do not need for the troubleshooting step. Microsoft recommends removing nonessential external hardware when addressing installation or upgrade problems.
What if 0x008DE222 appears during Windows installation or an upgrade?
Use Microsoft’s general installation troubleshooting path: remove avoidable hardware, check Device Manager, consider third-party security software as a possible interference, and then run the disk and Windows image checks. The command-line checks require administrator permissions.
1. Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Look for a device with a yellow warning icon. If one appears, right-click it and choose Update driver. If updating does not help and the device is not essential, you can choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and check whether Windows detects it again.
- If a warning remains, record the device name and status before making further changes. Do not uninstall unfamiliar devices indiscriminately.
2. Consider third-party security software
Microsoft’s installation guidance includes removing third-party security software as a troubleshooting step. Only do this if you know how to reinstall it safely and have the installer or account details available. Do not leave the PC without protection longer than needed; if you cannot safely reinstall the software, skip this step and ask its provider or your administrator for help.
3. Run CHKDSK
- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Enter
chkdsk /f C:and press Enter. - If Windows says the volume is in use and asks to schedule the check, type
Y, press Enter, and restart the PC to let the check run.
4. Repair the Windows image with DISM
- After Windows starts, open Command Prompt as an administrator again.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand let it finish. Do not close the window while the operation is running. - Restart Windows and retry the installation or upgrade that triggered the message.
What should I do if the code appears during Windows Update?
Back up personal files, run the troubleshooter for your Windows version, and check connectivity and drivers. If the update still fails, a clean boot can help identify software that interferes; restarting Windows Update services and clearing their download cache is a later troubleshooting step, not a code-specific cure.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Windows 11: Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Select Windows Update and run the troubleshooter.
- Follow any on-screen recommendations, restart if requested, and try Windows Update again.
Check connectivity and drivers
- Confirm the PC has a working network connection, then retry the update.
- Check for problems with network, display, and storage drivers. In Device Manager, a yellow warning icon is a useful clue; note the device and its status before updating or uninstalling it.
Try a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with a reduced set of services and startup apps, which can help determine whether background software is involved. Before starting, note that you will need to restore normal startup settings afterward.
- Search for System Configuration from Start and open it.
- On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and choose Open Task Manager. Disable enabled startup items, keeping track of what you change.
- Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart the PC. Try Windows Update.
- When finished testing, return to System Configuration and restore normal startup settings. Re-enable disabled startup items as appropriate.
Reset Windows Update services and cache only if needed
If the troubleshooter, connectivity checks, and clean boot do not resolve the update failure, resetting Windows Update services and clearing the SoftwareDistribution download cache may help. Because this procedure changes update-related files and service state, use Microsoft’s Windows Update reset instructions for your Windows version rather than deleting folders or changing unrelated services. Restart Windows after the reset, then check for updates again.
Is 0x008DE222 a OneDrive error?
It is not identified as a OneDrive code in the Microsoft OneDrive code guidance covered here. Use OneDrive troubleshooting only if the error appears in OneDrive or while syncing; a code shown elsewhere is not enough to attribute it to OneDrive.

Update OneDrive and Windows
Install available Windows and OneDrive updates, then retry the action that produced the message. If the error is tied to syncing, unlinking and setting up the OneDrive account again is another documented troubleshooting option.
Reset OneDrive if sync troubleshooting calls for it
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Enter
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /resetand press Enter. - If that command does not find OneDrive, Microsoft documents using the applicable OneDrive executable path under Program Files instead.
- After the reset, start OneDrive manually if it does not reopen. You may need to select your sync folders again because resetting disconnects sync connections.
These reset, unlink, update, and reinstall procedures are documented for particular OneDrive error codes; the OneDrive code page does not list 0x008DE222. Treat them as OneDrive troubleshooting when sync is visibly involved, not as a confirmed fix for this code.
Which troubleshooting path should I use?
Choose the path according to the trigger. The steps have different effects: some check system components, while others change startup behavior, update cache, or sync connections.
