Take a photograph or screenshot if the message disappears during a restart. Include the entire line, punctuation, and any filename or status number; a partial code is not enough to select a safe remedy.

Write a short timeline: the last successful action, the first failed action, and any change immediately before the failure. - Did Windows crash and restart, or did only one program close?
- Was an upgrade, feature update, or fresh installation in progress?
- Did the message appear beside a particular device in Device Manager?
- Does it occur every time, only after sleep or startup, or only in one application?
- Can you still sign in and use the desktop?
Keep this note with your troubleshooting record. If you need support, it prevents repeated experiments and gives the technician the context missing from the hexadecimal value.
How do I fix it if it is a Windows stop error or repeated restart?
Use this branch only when Windows itself shows a crash screen, reports an unexpected restart, or enters a restart loop. Microsoft’s general guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10 stop errors, but it does not map 0x008B9D9A to a particular cause. Follow the checks in order and stop when the system becomes stable.

Power down if the computer is unstable, unplug nonessential external hardware, and remove hardware added just before the first crash. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and required storage connected. Do not open a powered desktop or remove internal components unless you are qualified and the device maker’s instructions permit it. If the restarts stop, reconnect one item at a time to identify the change; a successful test narrows the cause but does not prove that the hexadecimal code belongs to that device.
2. Try Safe Mode when normal startup fails
If Windows can reach the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. In Windows 10, the same Windows Recovery Environment labels may appear; if the machine cannot reach them, interrupt startup twice to let Windows enter automatic recovery. Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers. If the crash disappears there, undo a recent driver, service, or startup change rather than deleting random system files.
3. Check Device Manager for warnings
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand categories related to the event, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, Network adapters, or Universal Serial Bus controllers. A yellow exclamation mark is a lead, not proof. Open the device’s Properties and read Device status, including its complete code and wording. Use the device maker’s current instructions for a rollback or reinstall, and restart after each controlled change.

4. Install relevant Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update (in Windows 10, Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update), select Check for updates, and install applicable updates. Also check the computer or component maker for firmware and driver releases that specifically address the affected hardware. Create a restore point or other backup before a major firmware or driver change when the system supports it.
5. Verify storage headroom
Microsoft gives 10% to 15% free hard-drive space as a general stop-error troubleshooting guideline. This is not an explanation or guaranteed fix for 0x008B9D9A, and the needed amount varies by configuration. Check Settings > System > Storage and keep sufficient space for updates, paging, and recovery operations. Remove only files you recognize, and back up personal data before deleting anything.
6. Use Windows recovery if basic checks fail
From Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, use Advanced startup to enter Windows Recovery Environment. Depending on what is available, try System Restore, Uninstall Updates, or Startup Repair. Read each screen carefully: rolling back an update or resetting Windows can remove applications and settings. How do I fix 0x008B9D9A during Windows Setup or an upgrade?

- Record the stage and full message. Note whether failure occurs during download, compatibility checks, reboot, or the final configuration. Photograph the screen if necessary.
- Disconnect nonessential external hardware. Remove storage drives, docks, printers, cameras, and other accessories that are not needed to complete Setup. Leave the installation media and required input devices connected.
- Bring the existing Windows installation up to date. From the current desktop, run Windows Update and restart before retrying. Install pending updates only when the machine has enough battery or stable AC power.
- Check storage and backups. Confirm that the target drive has room for the upgrade and that personal files are backed up. Do not format a drive or delete recovery partitions merely because this code appears.
- Match any code-specific instruction exactly. If a support table shows a different code, do not substitute 0x008B9D9A. Similar-looking hexadecimal values can represent different failures.
- Retry with one change at a time. If the second attempt fails, preserve the new log or screen text rather than repeating the same procedure indefinitely.
Use Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation troubleshooting for the general sequence. It does not establish a cause for this code.
What should I do if Device Manager shows the code?
Device Manager has its own status-code system. Open Device Manager, right-click the affected device, choose Properties, and read the complete text under Device status. Record the device’s exact model, hardware ID, driver provider, driver date, and version before changing anything.
Use the device status text, not the headline alone
Microsoft notes that its Device Manager article does not include every code. If the status text or code is not listed, avoid applying instructions for a superficially similar number. Search the hardware maker’s support documentation using the exact model and status wording, or contact the maker with the recorded details.
Roll back or reinstall only a confirmed device driver
In the device’s Driver tab, Roll Back Driver is appropriate only when the problem began after a recent driver update and the button is available. Otherwise, use the hardware maker’s official package, or uninstall the device from Device Manager and select Scan for hardware changes after restarting if the maker’s instructions call for it. Do not remove unrelated drivers to chase an unverified code.
For an unlisted status, escalate to the device manufacturer or Microsoft Support as recommended in Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code guidance.

What if the message appears inside an application?
An application can display a hexadecimal value that has no Windows-wide meaning. Write down the app name and version, the exact dialog title, the operation that failed, and any file path. Check the publisher’s release notes and support channel for that exact combination.
Test whether the problem is limited to one Windows account or one document, but do not delete user data as a diagnostic shortcut. If the program offers a repair or reset option in Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Advanced options, read what it preserves before using it. Reinstall only after backing up application settings and confirming that the installer is from the publisher. The available Microsoft sources do not establish that an application-level 0x008B9D9A message is an operating-system error.
Should I run Driver Verifier or other advanced diagnostics?
Only use advanced stop-error tools when the screen and timeline support a stop-error diagnosis and basic checks have not identified a recent change. Microsoft specifically cautions against verifying all drivers simultaneously: it can reduce performance and make Windows unusable.

- Create a backup and ensure you know how to reach Safe Mode or Windows Recovery Environment.
- Target a suspected third-party driver rather than selecting every driver.
- Keep a record of each setting so you can undo it.
- If boot failures begin, enter Safe Mode and run
verifier, then choose the option to delete existing settings, or use System Restore from Recovery Environment.
Driver Verifier is an investigative stress tool, not a general repair command. Its results are meaningful only when you can connect a flagged driver to the hardware and crash context. Read Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting guidance before enabling it.
How can I collect evidence before asking for support?
Good evidence is more valuable than repeating generic repairs. Save a screenshot or photograph, the complete text, and the timeline. Add the Windows edition and build from Settings > System > About (Windows 11) or Settings > System > About (Windows 10), the affected device or app version, and whether the issue survives a restart.
- For a stop error, note the stop-screen wording, restart behavior, and any dump-file name shown.
- For Setup or Update, record the stage, update history entry, and whether external devices were disconnected.
- For Device Manager, include the device model, status text, hardware ID, and driver version.
- For an application, include the publisher, version, document or operation involved, and any application log offered by its Help or Support menu.
Do not post product keys, passwords, recovery codes, or personal files with a support request. If the machine cannot boot, tell support that first and describe which recovery options you already tried.

Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > System around the restart time, then check Reliability Monitor by searching Start for “reliability.” These records can reveal the failing application, device, or update, but they may not contain the hexadecimal value itself.
Is the code dangerous by itself?
The characters alone do not show whether data is at risk or whether malware is involved. Risk depends on the source screen and symptoms: a one-off application dialog differs from a storage-related crash or a restart loop, so preserve important files before deeper troubleshooting.
