Error 0x008B422C has no verified, universal meaning in Windows 10 or Windows 11. The hexadecimal value alone cannot tell you whether Windows Update, a device driver, an installer, a game, or another application generated it. The reliable fix is to identify the component that displayed the code, capture the complete message and surrounding details, and then follow that component’s repair procedure.
Do not start by editing the registry, installing a random driver package, replacing hardware, or running a generic “error fixer.” Those actions can make a context-dependent problem harder to diagnose. Use the decision path below to determine where the code came from, then apply the least disruptive repair first.

What does error 0x008B422C mean?
Microsoft’s general documentation explains that system error values can be encountered in different locations and need programmatic and runtime context. Third-party software can also create its own hexadecimal-looking codes. No authoritative Microsoft reference in the material available for this article assigns 0x008B422C a standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 definition.
That means the same text can point to unrelated problems on two computers. It may be a vendor-specific value, a mistyped value, or a code shown by a particular subsystem rather than by Windows itself. Until you know the originating window, executable, device, or log, there is no honest code-specific fix to apply.

What should I record before trying a repair?
Write down the evidence while the message is visible. A screenshot is useful, but transcribe the text as well because a window title, KB number, or device status sentence often identifies the owner of the code.
- The complete error text, including punctuation and any secondary code.
- The window title and the name of the application, game, installer, printer utility, VPN, security product, or Windows component.
- What you were doing immediately before it appeared: installing an update, connecting a device, launching a program, signing in, or running a command.
- Whether the problem started after a Windows update, driver change, application update, or hardware change.
- Any Windows Update KB number, device name, hardware ID, executable name, module name, timestamp, or nearby event-log lines.
- Whether a restart makes the message disappear and whether it returns during the same action.
Do not delete the original log or uninstall the suspected application yet. Preserving the first message gives Microsoft, a hardware maker, or an application vendor something concrete to investigate.
How do I identify which Windows component produced the code?
Use the place where the value appeared as your first branch. The following comparison prevents you from applying an update repair to a driver problem or a vendor fix to Windows itself.

If the code was copied from a photo or typed manually, check every character. A single transposed digit changes the value and can lead you to the wrong troubleshooting article.
How do I fix 0x008B422C when it appears in Windows Update?
These steps are appropriate only when the message is in Windows Update or an update-installation screen. They are documented general Windows Update repairs, not proof that this hexadecimal value is an update error.

1. Restart and run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Save your work and restart the computer. A pending restart can block servicing operations.
- On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and start the automated Windows Update troubleshooter. If it does not resolve the issue, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
- Follow the prompts, restart when asked, and select Check for updates. Record the update name and any new code if the failure returns.
2. Repair the component store and protected system files
Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator. Type the following command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthThen run System File Checker:
sfc /scannowDo not close the window while verification is running; wait until it reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and try the update again. DISM repairs the Windows component store that servicing uses, while SFC checks protected system files. Their completion does not establish that the 0x008B422C value originated in either component.
3. Rebuild the Windows Update download cache
If the troubleshooter and integrity checks do not help, a damaged update download can be the cause of a continuing update failure. Use an elevated Command Prompt:
- Stop the Windows Update service with
net stop wuauserv. - Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the folder itself. Windows will recreate the contents when the service runs again.
- Return to the elevated Command Prompt and run
net start wuauserv. - Restart the computer and check for updates again.
If a file is locked, restart and repeat the service-stop step rather than forcing deletion of system files. Keep a note of any access-denied message for support.
4. Check the clock and update-related drivers
Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time on Windows 10. Turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone selection, then use Sync now when available. An incorrect clock can interfere with update validation.

Review driver updates from the hardware maker, especially if the update failure began after connecting a device or changing graphics, storage, network, or chipset software. Install only a package that matches the exact model and Windows edition. Do not infer that a driver is responsible merely because the hexadecimal value resembles a device code.
How do I fix it when Device Manager shows 0x008B422C?
Device Manager supplies the missing context: the affected device and a full Device status message. Open it by right-clicking Start and choosing Device Manager, expand the relevant category, and double-click the device with the warning icon. Read the entire text on the General tab under Device status.
Identify the device before changing anything
Record the device’s exact name and, on the Details tab, select Hardware Ids to capture the vendor and model identifiers. If several devices look similar, unplugging a removable device and refreshing Device Manager can help you match the entry, but do not disconnect storage or network hardware while it is transferring data.
Choose update, reinstall, or rollback based on the timing
- Update: Use Update driver only after confirming the model and obtain the package from the hardware maker or your PC manufacturer’s support page.
- Reinstall: If the driver files are damaged, choose Uninstall device, restart, and let Windows redetect it or install the manufacturer’s package. If offered, the checkbox to remove the driver package is more disruptive and should be used only when you have a replacement package ready.
- Roll back: If the device worked before a recent driver update, open Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when the button is available. Record the previous and current versions.
Microsoft’s Device Manager guidance does not define every possible code. An unlisted status can require the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support, particularly when the full status text names a bus, firmware, or resource problem. Do not replace the device based only on 0x008B422C.
What if a program, game, installer, or utility displays the code?
A named application is the most important clue because third-party software can generate its own error values. Close the program, restart Windows, and reproduce the action once while noting the exact application version. Check that product’s support documentation for the complete message, not just the hexadecimal fragment.

Information to send the application vendor
- Application name and exact version or build.
- Windows edition and whether the computer is Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- The complete text, screenshot, and time of the failure.
- The action that triggers it and whether it happens for every file, account, or device.
- Any crash report, installer log, executable name, or module name shown with the message.
Use the vendor’s repair, update, or uninstall-and-reinstall procedure only after confirming you have the installer, license information, and backups needed to restore your settings. If the message appears only inside a security product or printer utility, its support team—not a generic Windows code list—is the appropriate source for a definition.

When the value appears in a console or log rather than a dialog, context is part of the error. Copy the command exactly, including switches and paths. Preserve the executable or module name, timestamp, account, and several lines before and after the entry. A log viewer may display the same hexadecimal-looking number as data from an application rather than as a Windows system error.
In Event Viewer, use Windows Logs and the relevant Application, System, or vendor-specific log, then filter by the time of the failure. Export the event or save a screenshot before clearing logs. Do not publish logs containing usernames, email addresses, product keys, or network paths when asking for help in a public forum.
Is 0x008B422C a Windows 10-only or Windows 11-only problem?
No. The value has not been assigned a verified universal meaning for either release. The same vendor application or device can display it on both versions, while a Windows Update failure can have different underlying causes on each system.
There is an important lifecycle distinction for Windows 10: Microsoft states that support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. If a Windows 10 computer cannot obtain an update, determine whether you are troubleshooting a repair failure or seeking an update that is no longer offered for that operating system.
What should I avoid while troubleshooting?
- Do not assume the code is a virus or proof of hardware failure. The value alone supports neither conclusion.
- Do not download a “universal” driver pack. It can install an incompatible driver and remove useful rollback options.
- Do not edit registry values copied from an unrelated forum post.
- Do not delete the entire Windows folder or force-remove a locked update file.
- Do not reset or reinstall Windows before identifying the originating application or device and backing up data.
- Do not run multiple repair utilities at once; their changes can obscure which action affected the result.
Restart-and-retest steps are reversible and should precede cache deletion or driver changes. Keep a chronological note of every command, setting change, driver version, and result so you can undo a failed change or give support a usable timeline.
When should I contact Microsoft or another vendor?
Escalate when the complete message still cannot identify the source, when DISM and SFC report errors that they cannot repair, when a device remains unavailable after a known-good driver reinstall, or when an application fails on every launch. Contact Microsoft for a Windows Update or Windows installation window, the hardware maker for a Device Manager status, and the application vendor for a named program or installer. Include the evidence you recorded instead of sending only 0x008B422C.
