- Do not run registry-cleaning scripts or import a registry file based only on the code.

What information should I capture before trying a fix?
Write down the details while the message is visible. A screenshot is useful, but also copy the text manually because screenshots can hide a title bar, secondary code, or a button label that support staff need.
- The complete error sentence, including punctuation and any text before or after
0x008A7656. - The window title, application name, publisher name, or Windows settings page where it appeared.

- Open Settings. In Windows 11, select System, then Troubleshoot, then Other troubleshooters. In Windows 10, open Update & Security, then Troubleshoot, and choose the available Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Run the troubleshooter and allow it to complete. Record every finding or action it reports instead of dismissing the result.
- Return to Windows Update and note the update name, knowledge-base number, and time of the failure. If the page shows a different code alongside 0x008A7656, record both.
- Review Update history for the failed item. A failure that occurs only with one update should be reported with that update’s identifier rather than with the hexadecimal value alone.
