Error 0x008A39D7 has no verified, universal meaning in Microsoft’s published Windows error-code documentation. The number alone is not enough to choose a repair: the correct fix depends on whether it appeared in Windows Update or Setup, on a blue or black crash screen, in Device Manager, Event Viewer, or a particular application. Record the complete message and the action that triggered it, then follow the matching path below.

The procedures apply to Windows 11 and, where still applicable, Windows 10. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so Microsoft no longer provides its regular free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that release.

What does error 0x008A39D7 mean?

There is no authoritative public mapping that assigns 0x008A39D7 to one Windows component, driver, or hardware fault. Hexadecimal values can be generated by different setup programs, drivers, applications, and recovery components, so treating the code as a diagnosis can send you toward the wrong fix.

Look for the surrounding information. A Windows Setup failure normally has a phase, result code, or log entry; a Device Manager problem names a device and supplies status text; a stop screen may identify a bugcheck or driver module; an application error usually includes the program name. Those details are more useful than the isolated number.

What should I record before changing anything?

Capture the evidence while it is still visible. Write down:

  • The exact spelling and capitalization of the code, including the 0x prefix.
  • The full error message, any stop-code name, and any file, driver, module, or device name.
  • Where it appeared: Windows Update, Windows Setup, a blue or black screen, Device Manager, Event Viewer, or a third-party application.
  • What happened immediately before it: an update, upgrade, driver installation, new peripheral, firmware change, application launch, sleep/wake, or unexpected shutdown.
  • The Windows edition and version, the affected hardware model, and whether Windows can still boot normally.
  • The date and time, plus an Event Viewer event ID if one is shown.

Back up important documents before uninstalling updates, restoring the system, or starting any reinstall. Microsoft warns that some recovery choices can result in data loss; a backup gives you a way back if the first repair attempt makes the system less usable.

Which troubleshooting path matches your screen?

Use the location of the code to choose a path. Do not apply a Device Manager driver procedure to an upgrade log, or assume an application error is a Windows stop error.

Where the code appears First checks Escalation clue
Windows Update or Windows Setup Disconnect nonessential hardware, check storage, install pending updates, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and repair system files. Repeated upgrade failure: use SetupDiag and read the surrounding Windows Setup log entry.
Blue or black crash screen, freeze, or unexpected restart Remove recently added hardware, try Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, update Windows and firmware, and run appropriate hardware or memory diagnostics. If basic checks fail, use System Restore or another Windows recovery option.
Device Manager Open the device Properties page, read the status text, update or reinstall the driver, restart, and scan for hardware changes. If the code is not in Microsoft’s Device Manager list, contact the device maker or Microsoft Support.
Third-party application or Event Viewer Identify the application or event source, preserve the module name and timestamp, then update, repair, or reinstall the affected program. Use the application vendor’s support information when the Windows logs point to an application-specific component.

How do I fix 0x008A39D7 during Windows Update or Windows Setup?

Start with the least invasive installation checks. The same general approach applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10, although the Settings labels differ.

1. Remove unnecessary peripherals

Shut down the computer and unplug nonessential USB devices, external drives, printers, capture devices, hubs, and docking hardware. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and hardware required to boot. A setup process can fail when it encounters a device or driver that is not needed for the upgrade.

2. Check free storage

In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage. In Windows 10, open Settings > System > Storage. Make sure the system drive has adequate free space for the update and its temporary files; remove or move large personal files only after confirming that your backup is current. Do not delete folders you cannot identify.

3. Install pending updates and hardware drivers

For Windows 11, go to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. In Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Restart whenever Windows requests it, then check again until no additional update is offered. Install relevant manufacturer firmware or hardware-driver updates from the device maker when the setup message identifies a component.

4. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and run the troubleshooter. Apply only the changes it recommends, restart, and retry the update.

5. Consider third-party security software carefully

Some upgrade failures involve software that intercepts system files or installation activity. Temporarily removing third-party antivirus is appropriate only when Microsoft’s upgrade guidance supports it and you have a recovery plan. Do not leave the computer without protection longer than necessary, and reinstall or re-enable the product after the upgrade attempt if it is compatible.

6. Repair the Windows component store and system files

Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Run the following commands one at a time, waiting for each to finish:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Restart after both commands complete and retry Windows Update or Setup. If either command reports that it could not repair files, keep the exact result and the time it occurred; that information can help support staff interpret the setup failure.

7. Use SetupDiag when an upgrade still fails

For a persistent upgrade failure, run Microsoft’s SetupDiag utility and inspect the Windows Setup logs around the failed attempt. SetupDiag’s interpretation depends on the setup phase and the result-code family, so the adjacent log entries, named driver, and operation that failed are more informative than 0x008A39D7 by itself. Preserve the generated report before trying another upgrade.

How do I fix the code after a crash, freeze, or unexpected restart?

A crash screen or repeated restart indicates that Windows encountered a serious problem, but it does not prove that this particular hexadecimal value identifies the cause. Follow the sequence below while keeping the last stable configuration in mind.

1. Undo the most recent hardware change

Power off the computer and disconnect hardware added immediately before the problem began. Remove a new adapter, expansion card, USB device, dock, or external drive when it is safe to do so. If the system becomes stable after removal, reconnect devices one at a time so you can identify the trigger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Start Windows in Safe Mode

If Windows still reaches the desktop, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. At the recovery screen choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select a Safe Mode option.

Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers. If the crash stops there, inspect recently installed drivers, services, and hardware rather than repeatedly restarting normal Windows. If the same failure occurs in Safe Mode, record that fact for the next diagnostic step.

3. Check Device Manager and update Windows

Press Windows key + X, choose Device Manager, and look for warning icons. Expand the categories related to the affected hardware, open the device’s Properties, and read the status text. Install pending Windows updates and relevant BIOS or firmware updates from the computer or device manufacturer when available.

4. Run relevant hardware diagnostics

Use the memory test, storage diagnostic, or manufacturer hardware test appropriate to the symptom. A memory problem can appear as different crash codes from one restart to the next, so a single hexadecimal value does not rule hardware in or out. Record the test name and result instead of replacing parts based only on 0x008A39D7.

5. Restore a known-good system state

If the failures began after a driver, application, or update and the basic checks do not help, use System Restore or another recovery option. Choose a restore point dated before the change, review the affected programs shown by Windows, and keep your backup available before confirming.

Microsoft’s analysis of stop errors published in 2025 attributed 70% to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% to unknown causes. Those are population-level figures, not proof that a third-party driver or hardware component caused your instance of 0x008A39D7.

How do I fix 0x008A39D7 when Device Manager shows it?

Device Manager supplies the device name and a status message that the raw number does not. Use that information to repair the specific device rather than searching for a replacement driver by code alone.

  1. Open Device Manager from the Windows key + X menu.
  2. Expand the relevant category, right-click the device, and choose Properties.
  3. Read the text under the General tab and note the device name, manufacturer, and status code.
  4. On the Driver tab, choose Update Driver and let Windows search for an available driver, or install the official driver supplied by the hardware maker.
  5. If the issue began immediately after a driver update and the Roll Back Driver button is available, consider returning to the previous driver instead of forcing a newer one.
  6. If updating does not help, choose Uninstall device, confirm, and restart Windows. After restart, open Device Manager, choose Action > Scan for hardware changes, and allow Windows to detect the device again.

Do not substitute a random driver because its version number looks newer. If 0x008A39D7 is not covered by Microsoft’s published Device Manager error list, Microsoft advises contacting the hardware vendor’s technical support or Microsoft Support for help.

What if an application or Event Viewer displays the code?

An application can surface a hexadecimal value that is meaningful only to that program. Note the application name, version, action being performed, and any DLL or module named in the message. Check for an update from the application’s publisher, use the program’s repair or reset option when Windows provides one, and reinstall it only after preserving settings or data the program stores locally.

To inspect the Windows record, press Windows key + R, enter eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. Open Windows Logs > Application or Windows Logs > System, sort by date and time, and compare the event immediately before the failure. Record the event source, event ID, level, and named module. A matching timestamp can reveal whether the application error followed a driver, service, or update event.

What should I do if none of these steps works?

Escalate in increasing order of disruption:

  1. Repeat the context-specific troubleshooter with nonessential peripherals disconnected and keep the logs from the failed attempt.
  2. Uninstall a recent Windows update if the problem started immediately after that update and Windows Recovery offers the option.
  3. Reinstall the current Windows version using Microsoft’s supported recovery path, after verifying your backup and ensuring you have installation and sign-in information available.
  4. Use System Restore when a suitable restore point exists.
  5. Contact the hardware or application vendor with the full message, model, driver version, setup phase, Event Viewer details, and the steps that already failed. Contact Microsoft Support when Windows itself remains the likely source.

Windows 10’s end-of-support date does not explain this code, but it changes the long-term decision: after October 14, 2025, ordinary free security and quality updates are no longer supplied for Windows 10. If the computer supports it, moving to a supported Windows release may be safer than repeatedly troubleshooting an installation that depends on obsolete servicing.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, adjust selected resource-heavy settings, check Windows settings and missing updates, and provide tools such as real-time boost, file shredding, and crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus protection. Results vary, and no utility repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 0x008A39D7 a virus or malware code?

The hexadecimal value alone cannot establish that. It has no verified universal mapping, so identify the screen, application, device, or setup phase first and use your normal security software and Windows logs to investigate suspicious behavior.

Can I decode 0x008A39D7 by converting it to decimal?

Converting the number changes its notation, not its meaning. Windows components and applications can assign different meanings to hexadecimal values, so the surrounding message and event source are required for interpretation.

Why did the error appear immediately after a driver update?

A newly installed driver can expose an incompatibility, but the code does not prove that the driver is defective. Compare the Device Manager status and crash details, then update, roll back, or reinstall the named device driver using the manufacturer’s official package.

Does Windows 10 end of support prevent this error from being fixed?

No. You can still use the built-in troubleshooting, repair, and recovery tools. However, after October 14, 2025, Windows 10 no longer receives Microsoft’s regular free security and quality updates, so continued use carries a different maintenance risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information will Microsoft Support or a hardware vendor need?

Provide the full message, exact location of the code, Windows edition and version, device or application model, recent changes, Event Viewer event ID, named driver or module, and the results of the steps you tried. That context is more actionable than sending only the hexadecimal value.
