Error 0x008967B8 has no verified Microsoft meaning in the authoritative material currently available. It is not assigned to a particular Windows component, update package, application, or hardware fault, so a reliable fix depends on where it appeared. Treat the code as a symptom: record the complete message, the program or installer that displayed it, what you were doing, and whether Windows Update, an upgrade, or startup recovery was involved.
Start with the least invasive action that matches the symptom. For an update, run the Windows Update troubleshooter and restart. For an upgrade or installation, disconnect nonessential hardware and check Device Manager. Use the SoftwareDistribution reset only for update failures, DISM and SFC when Windows corruption is suspected, and Startup Repair from installation media when Windows will not boot.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat error 0x008967B8 means—and what it does not prove
Exact-code searches have not identified 0x008967B8 in Microsoft documentation or assigned it to a named Windows service, update, installer, device, or application. That absence matters: a page that labels the code as one specific fault is making a claim that is not established by the available evidence.
The code alone also does not prove that a computer has malware. It is an identifier shown by something on the system, but without the surrounding message and event, there is no sound way to say whether the trigger was an update transaction, an operating-system component, an application, storage trouble, or a startup problem. Do not delete system files or change boot settings solely because the hexadecimal number looks unfamiliar.

Capture the context before you repair
Write down these details, or photograph the screen if Windows is about to restart:
- The full error text, including any second code, file name, or suggested action.
- The window title and the application, installer, or Windows component that displayed it.
- What happened immediately before the error: downloading an update, installing an upgrade, opening an app, connecting hardware, or starting the computer.
- Whether the message appears every time or only during one operation.
- Whether Windows 11 or Windows 10 is installed, and whether the problem began after an update, driver change, or hardware change.
These observations determine which branch below is appropriate. If the code appears in more than one context, handle the update or startup branch first and keep the notes for later support.
Choose the repair path by symptom
| Where the code appears | First manual action | Access required | Relative risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update download or installation | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and check for updates | Normal Windows session | Low risk; easy to reverse |
| Repeated update failure after troubleshooting | Stop Windows Update, clear the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, restart the service, then retry |
Administrator access in a normal session | Moderate; affects the update cache, not personal documents |
| Windows upgrade or program installation | Unplug nonessential hardware, inspect Device Manager, review third-party security software, and check the drive when indicated | Normal Windows session; restart may be required | Low to moderate; hardware and security changes should be deliberate |
| Application launch or crash | Record the app and complete message, then use system-integrity checks if Windows corruption is suspected | Normal Windows session | Low when starting with diagnostics; do not guess at a code-specific fix |
| Windows cannot start | Boot from Windows installation media and run Startup Repair | Recovery media and access to the recovery environment | More invasive; follow the recovery sequence and review the log |
The table is a triage guide, not a diagnosis. Move to a deeper step only when the preceding step does not resolve the matching symptom.
Fix the code when it appears during Windows Update
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft identifies the Update Troubleshooter as the supported first step for an error encountered while downloading or installing updates. It can run automatically in the Get Help application or through Settings.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run. Alternatively, open Get Help and follow its automated Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Allow the checks to finish and apply any offered correction.
- Restart the computer, even if the troubleshooter does not request it.
- After the restart, open Windows Update and select Check for updates.
On Windows 10, the path is different:
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Restart Windows and check for updates again.
If the code disappears, do not perform the cache-reset or repair-command steps merely as a precaution. If the same update fails again, continue with the cache reset.

2. Reset the Windows Update cache
Use this procedure only when the symptom is update-related. The operation removes the contents of the update download cache so Windows can create it again; it is not a general-purpose cleanup for an application error.
- Sign in with an account that can administer the computer.
- Open the Services management console by pressing
Windows, typingServices, and opening the matching result. - Locate Windows Update, right-click it, and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents inside that folder. Do not delete the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update is stopped before trying again; do not force-delete unrelated files. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Verify that Windows is using automatic date and time. On Windows 11, check Settings > Time & language > Date & time; on Windows 10, check Settings > Time & Language > Date & time, then enable the automatic time option.
- Restart the computer and run Windows Update again.
An elevated Command Prompt can perform the service portion if the Services interface will not respond. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), run net stop wuauserv, clear the contents of the same cache folder in File Explorer, and then run net start wuauserv. Close the elevated window when finished and retry the update.
3. Check third-party drivers before another update attempt
Microsoft also recommends updating third-party drivers when an update error persists. Use the hardware maker’s current driver package for the exact Windows edition and device, and avoid installing a package intended for a different model. If a driver update began the problem, record the previous version before changing anything so you can identify the change during troubleshooting.
Fix the code during a Windows upgrade or installation
Disconnect nonessential hardware
For an upgrade or installation attempt, shut down and unplug hardware that is not required to complete setup: external storage, printers, cameras, USB hubs, and other accessories. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and the installation media or drive required by the procedure. Reconnect devices one at a time after setup succeeds. This creates a clear test of whether a peripheral or its driver is involved without claiming that the hexadecimal code identifies a particular device.
Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the device categories and look for a yellow warning icon.
- Note the device name and its status before making changes.
- Install the correct driver supplied for that device and Windows version, or follow the device manufacturer’s documented recovery procedure.
- Restart and retry the upgrade or installation.
If no warning icon is present, do not remove random devices. The absence of a warning does not identify the cause, but unnecessary removals can create a second problem during setup.

Review third-party security software
Microsoft lists third-party security software as something to review during installation troubleshooting. Check the product’s documented compatibility with the Windows version and upgrade path. If its vendor provides a temporary-disable or removal procedure for upgrades, follow that procedure exactly, make sure you can reinstall or re-enable protection afterward, and do not leave the computer unprotected longer than necessary. The error code itself is not evidence that security software is defective.
Check the system drive when storage errors are suspected
When the installation symptoms point to drive errors, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
chkdsk /f C:
The /f switch asks Windows to fix file-system errors. If the system drive is in use, Windows may schedule the check for the next restart; accept that schedule, save work, and allow the scan to finish. Do not interrupt a scheduled disk check. If the error appeared in a different drive letter, first verify the letter in File Explorer and do not substitute it casually for the system volume.
When an application displays 0x008967B8
No authoritative source assigns this code to a particular application, so an app-specific appearance must be investigated from the app outward rather than treated as a known Windows error. Record the application’s exact name and version, the action that triggers the message, and whether other applications still open normally. If the message occurs only in one program, preserve that information for the publisher’s support channel; it is more useful than reporting the hexadecimal value alone.

Repair suspected Windows component corruption with DISM and SFC
Microsoft documents Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) followed by System File Checker (SFC) when corruption of Windows components or protected system files is suspected. Run the commands in this order from an elevated command window.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter the following command and wait for it to complete:
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth
- After DISM finishes, run:
Sfc.exe /Scannow
- Let SFC reach 100 percent. Do not close the window because the result is reported at the end.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the operation that produced 0x008967B8 and record whether the full message changes.
DISM and SFC are repair steps for suspected system corruption; they are not proof that corruption caused this particular code. If both commands complete without resolving the original symptom, return to the context branch rather than repeating them indefinitely.
When Windows will not start
Prepare recovery media
Startup Repair requires Windows installation media. A USB flash drive for Windows installation media with enough capacity for the official media-creation process is the practical form factor; creating or using that media can erase the drive, so use a blank drive or move its files first. If the computer can still reach Windows, create the media before attempting a repair. If it cannot, use another working computer and the appropriate Windows media-creation process.

- Insert the Windows installation USB and start the affected computer from it. Use the computer manufacturer’s boot-menu key if the USB does not start automatically.
- At the Windows Setup screen, choose the language and keyboard options, then select Next.
- Choose Repair your computer, not Install now.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Choose the Windows installation to repair if prompted and let the process finish.
- Remove the USB when instructed and restart. If Windows still does not start, return to the recovery environment and review the log at
%windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrtTrail.txt.
Startup Repair is the appropriate documented branch when the operating system cannot boot. Do not jump to a clean installation while personal files have not been backed up and the recovery log has not been reviewed.
How to decide what to try next
- The code appeared while downloading or installing an update: use the troubleshooter, restart, and check again. Only then reset the SoftwareDistribution contents and verify date and time.
- The code appeared during an upgrade or program installation: disconnect nonessential hardware, inspect Device Manager, review third-party security software, and run
chkdsk /f C:when drive errors are suspected. - The code appears when one application launches: capture the app-specific details, restart once, use the app’s documented repair path, and use DISM/SFC only when broader Windows behavior suggests corruption.
- Windows cannot boot: use installation media, select Repair your computer, and run Startup Repair; inspect
SrtTrail.txtif it fails.
Keep a short log of each change, the restart that followed, and the exact resulting message. That prevents repeating a cache deletion or command without learning whether it affected the symptom.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, a Windows 10 computer may therefore be outside ordinary support even if it still starts and can run the steps above. This does not change the repair sequence for an existing installation, but it does affect the long-term decision: after recovering the machine, check Microsoft’s current guidance for supported upgrades or replacement rather than assuming future Windows 10 updates will continue indefinitely.
When to stop and seek targeted help
Escalate with the information you recorded when the code persists after the context-appropriate steps, when the full message names a specific file or package, or when the computer repeatedly loses the ability to boot. Include the Windows edition, the application or installer, the exact operation, the time the problem began, the commands already run, and the result of Startup Repair or SrtTrail.txt. That evidence lets support distinguish an update transaction from an application failure or a storage problem; the hexadecimal code by itself cannot.
