Check Windows Update history
If the code appeared while downloading, installing, or rolling back an update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history (Windows 10). Check Device Manager

Right-click Start, choose Event Viewer, and inspect Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application around the recorded time. Use Filter Current Log if there are many entries. If 0x00886D29 appears during Windows Update or setup
Run the built-in troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter. Apply only the proposed fixes, restart, and retry the update.

Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time in Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time in Windows 10. Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically when available, then select Sync now. An incorrect clock can invalidate update connections and certificate checks.
Reset the Windows Update download cache
Use an administrator account. Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) by right-clicking Start. Stop the update services with:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bitsOpen File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar. Delete the contents of that folder, not the folder itself. If a file is locked, restart the computer and repeat the stop commands before trying again. Return to the administrator window and start the services:
net start bits
net start wuauservRestart Windows, open Windows Update, and retry. The cache will be rebuilt; previously downloaded update files may need to be downloaded again.

Install servicing and cumulative updates in the right edition
For an upgrade that still fails, verify that the servicing-stack update and the current cumulative update match your exact Windows 10 or Windows 11 release and architecture. Do not use a package intended for another build. If the update history names a specific package, search for that package in Microsoft’s catalog or support documentation and follow its stated prerequisites.
Repair Windows component and system files
Use these commands only when the error accompanies a failed update, setup operation, or signs of damaged Windows components. Save work first and keep the computer connected to power. Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management check:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthWait for it to reach 100 percent. It may appear paused for several minutes.
- After DISM completes, run System File Checker:
sfc /scannowAllow the scan to finish. Do not close the window when verification pauses at a percentage.
- Restart Windows and retry the operation that produced the code.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, stop rather than downloading an arbitrary ISO or copying DLL files from a third-party site. Use installation media that matches the installed edition and build, or contact Microsoft Support for the correct servicing procedure. SFC’s result will state whether it found and repaired files, found files it could not repair, or found no integrity violations; preserve that wording for escalation.
If the code points to a driver or device
Update the flagged driver
In Device Manager, right-click the device with the warning icon and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers. If Windows finds nothing, visit the hardware manufacturer’s support page using another device if necessary and download the driver for your exact model and Windows version. Avoid packages for a different revision or for Windows on ARM when you use an x64 PC.

Roll back, disable, or uninstall
If the problem began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when the button is available. Otherwise choose Disable device for a short diagnostic test, or Uninstall device and restart so Windows can redetect it. Do not uninstall a storage-controller, keyboard, or network driver while you depend on it for access unless you have a recovery plan.

Test the physical connection
Power down before reseating an internal card or cable. For external devices, try a different port and remove hubs or docks from the chain. Test the device on another computer when possible. If the same hardware fails elsewhere, the vendor’s warranty or repair process is more appropriate than repeated Windows changes.

Protect important files before using recovery tools. Copy documents to an external drive or trusted cloud location while Windows is stable. Record any blue-screen stop code, the application in the foreground, and the time of each restart.
Enter Safe Mode
From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
