- Select System, then Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot. Depending on the current Windows build, the button may open Get Help or an automated help flow instead.
- Allow the checks to finish and apply any correction it offers.
- Return to the Activation page and read the current status and error text.
Write down the result before closing the window. Microsoft warns that running the troubleshooter or retrying activation can change the displayed error code. A new code may have a documented explanation even when 0x00879D42 does not.
How do I run the Activation troubleshooter on Windows 10?
Windows 10 uses a different Settings path, but the purpose and limitation are the same: use an administrator account and run it before the installation is activated.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Update & Security, then Activation.

Does the Windows edition have to match my license?
Yes. Activation requires a digital license or a 25-character product key that covers the edition installed on the device. A Windows Home entitlement will not activate a Windows Pro installation, and an Enterprise installation generally requires the organization’s appropriate activation channel.

Open Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10. The edition is shown on that page. You can also use winver to confirm the Windows release and build.
Check the entitlement
- A digital license is associated with the device, and in some cases with the Microsoft account used to sign in.
- A product key is a 25-character code supplied with a qualifying purchase or device.
- Volume activation is intended for organizational licensing and may require the organization’s activation service or administrator.
If the edition is wrong, the remedy is to install or switch to the edition covered by the entitlement, or obtain a legitimate license for the installed edition. Buying a key is not a universal fix for 0x00879D42; it is relevant only when the device has no valid entitlement or the edition does not match.
How do I retry Windows activation online?
After confirming the edition and license, connect the computer to the internet and retry from the Activation page. A digital license can activate automatically when Windows reaches Microsoft’s activation service; a product-key installation may show an option to change or enter the key.
- Open the appropriate Activation page for your Windows version.

Can I activate Windows offline?
Yes. Microsoft documents an offline Product Activation Portal workflow for cases where online activation fails or the target computer cannot complete the online exchange. It uses an Installation ID generated on the affected computer and a Confirmation ID returned after the ID is submitted through the portal.
Generate an Installation ID from Settings
Open the Activation page and follow the option for telephone or offline activation when it is offered. Windows displays an Installation ID. Copy it exactly, preserving every group of digits.
Generate an Installation ID with SLMGR
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), then run:
SLMGR /dtiThe command displays the Installation ID. Save the output before closing the administrator window.

Submit the ID and enter the response
- On a device with internet access, open Microsoft’s Product Activation Portal using the route presented by the Windows wizard.
- Submit the Installation ID exactly as displayed.
- Copy the returned Confirmation ID.
- Return to the offline activation wizard on the Windows computer and enter the Confirmation ID in the corresponding fields.
- Complete the wizard and check the Activation page for the final status.
Volume-license installations may not use the same consumer workflow. If the wizard refers to an organization’s activation service, contact that organization’s administrator instead of attempting to substitute a retail key.

Use the latest code as the diagnostic lead. Microsoft notes that the troubleshooter and subsequent activation attempts can change the displayed error. Search Microsoft’s current activation support information for the new code, and preserve the earlier screenshot so support can see the sequence.
A changed code does not by itself confirm that the license is invalid. Compare the new message with the edition, license channel, and network state you recorded at the start.

Escalate when the troubleshooter, edition check, online retry, and documented offline route do not activate Windows, or when the code keeps returning without a clear explanation. Provide complete evidence so support does not have to repeat basic checks.
- The exact full error text and screenshots, including any code that replaced 0x00879D42.
- The Windows edition, version, and build from
