The code itself also does not establish that Windows is infected, that a driver is damaged, or that a particular service must be changed. Avoid registry edits, random driver packages, and “one-click” fixes that claim to recognize the number unless you can first connect the message to a known device or program.

Capture the details that identify the failure
Before closing the dialog or retrying the operation, write down the information below. These details are more useful than the hexadecimal value by itself.
- Exact application: record the program name and, if shown, its version. Note whether the message appeared in Windows Settings, File Explorer, an installer, a printer utility, a game, or another program.
- Device involved: identify the printer, USB device, display, network adapter, or other hardware being installed or used. If no device was involved, record that fact.
- Triggering action: describe what you clicked or attempted immediately before the message appeared, such as adding a device, printing, installing a driver, opening a file, or starting an application.
- Full message text: copy every line around the code. A sentence describing the failed operation may identify the responsible component even though the code is undocumented.
- Windows edition and version: note whether the computer runs Windows 11 or Windows 10 and include the version or build shown under Settings > System > About.
- Timing and repeatability: record whether the error occurs every time, only with one document or device, or only after a restart, update, or reconnection.
Take a screenshot if the dialog may disappear, but redact account names, email addresses, serial numbers, network names, and other private information before sharing it. If the message comes from a third-party application, the application’s support team may need the full text and version rather than the code alone.
Choose the correct troubleshooting branch
If a printer was involved
Use the printer procedure below only when the message appeared while adding, installing, recognizing, or printing to a printer. Microsoft documents these as general printer remedies; none is verified as a fix for 0x00879A6C.
If no printer was involved
Do not apply printer-driver or print-spooler steps. Repeat the operation once while recording the application, device, full text, and Windows version. Then use the support channel for the application or hardware that displayed the message. Without that context, assigning a cause would be speculation.

If the dialog names a different device
Keep the device name, model, connection type, and the exact operation in your notes. The printer guidance does not establish a remedy for another device class, so use the device maker’s documentation or the application’s support process instead of substituting a printer fix.
Printer troubleshooting steps for a confirmed printer context
Work through these steps in order and test the original operation after each major change. Stop when the printer works; do not install several unrelated driver packages at once, because that makes the result difficult to interpret.
1. Check the physical or wireless connection
- For a USB printer, reseat the cable at both ends and try the same computer port again. If the printer has its own power switch, confirm that it is on and not showing an error state.
- For a network printer, confirm that the printer is connected to the intended Wi-Fi or wired network and that the computer is on that network. A temporary connection failure can prevent Windows from finding an installed printer.
- If the printer has gone into an error or sleep state, use its controls to return it to a ready state before trying the operation again.

2. Restart the printer
Turn the printer off using its normal power control, wait for it to shut down completely, and turn it back on. Wait until it reports that it is ready, then retry the same Windows action. Microsoft includes restarting the printer among its general printing checks.

3. Try Windows Update first for the driver
Microsoft identifies Windows Update as the preferred route for obtaining a compatible printer driver. On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If Windows presents an applicable printer or optional driver update, install it, restart the computer if requested, and test the printer again.
Windows Update may not offer a suitable package for every model. Do not assume that the absence of a printer driver in the update list proves that the printer is defective; continue to the manufacturer route below.

If Windows Update has no suitable driver, use the printer maker’s official support page for the exact model. Match the download to the printer model and to the computer’s Windows version and system type. A package for a similar model, a different Windows edition, or a different system type may not be appropriate.
Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions, then restart Windows if the installer requests it. Test printing with the same application and document that produced the original message. Keep the downloaded installer and its version in your notes in case the problem returns.

5. Update or reinstall through Device Manager
Windows also provides Device Manager as a driver route. Right-click the Start button, open Device Manager, and expand the category that contains the printer or its related device entry. Right-click the entry and choose Update driver. If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, use the manufacturer package from the previous step rather than selecting an unrelated download.
If the printer remains unrecognized or the driver installation is damaged, Device Manager can also be used to remove the device entry before reinstalling the correctly matched package. Record the model and current driver details first, and do not remove entries for unrelated hardware.

6. Remove and add the printer again
When Windows has a stale or incomplete printer installation, Microsoft’s guidance includes removing and reinstalling the printer. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10. Select the affected printer, choose the option to remove it, restart Windows if requested, and then use Add device to install it again.
During reinstallation, use the same connection method that the printer requires. If Windows cannot find a network printer automatically, verify the network connection and use the manufacturer’s documented discovery or installation method instead of guessing at an address.
7. Restart the Print Spooler when print jobs or recognition are stuck
Microsoft’s printer guidance includes clearing and restarting the Print Spooler where appropriate. To restart the service, press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. In the Services window, locate Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Restart. If the service is stopped, choose Start.
Retry the original print or setup action after the service has restarted. If jobs remain stuck, note the queue state and the exact message before taking further action. Avoid deleting system files or changing service startup settings unless the printer maker or Microsoft support gives instructions for your specific case.

8. Run the Windows 11 printer troubleshooter when available
Microsoft documents the Windows 11 Get Help printer troubleshooter for printer recognition and related problems. Open the Get Help app, search for printer troubleshooting, and follow the prompts for the affected device. The troubleshooter is general guidance and does not identify or guarantee a repair for 0x00879A6C.
Compare the documented printer driver routes
