If the code appeared while Windows was downloading or installing an update, begin with Microsoft’s built-in Windows Update troubleshooter. Microsoft says this troubleshooter can help resolve update error codes, and Windows 11 and Windows 10 expose it through different Settings paths.
Windows 11: run the automated troubleshooter
- Open the Get Help app from Start.
- Start the automated Windows Update troubleshooter and follow its prompts.
- Allow it to apply any suggested repair, then restart the PC if requested.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If Get Help is unavailable or you need the manual route, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update, select Run, complete the checks, restart, and try the update again.
Windows 10: use the legacy Settings path
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security.
- Select Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.

Shut down the computer and unplug hardware that is not required to boot: printers, scanners, USB storage, external drives, and docking stations are common examples. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and the hardware needed to operate the PC. Reconnect devices one at a time after the update or upgrade succeeds so you can identify a conflicting peripheral.

Install pending updates before retrying an upgrade
Open Windows Update and install updates that are already waiting. Restart as many times as Windows requests, then retry the original operation. A system that has a pending servicing restart can reject a subsequent installation until that state is cleared.
Inspect Device Manager
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand the device categories and look for a yellow warning icon. For a device directly involved in the failure, install a current driver from the device manufacturer’s supported package or uninstall the device and restart when Windows offers to redetect it. chkdsk /f C:Follow the prompt to schedule the check if the system volume is in use, then restart. Allow the disk check to complete before attempting the update again.

Stop the Windows Update service

Synchronize date and time
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Enable automatic time and automatic time-zone settings.
- Select Sync now when that control is available.
- Restart the update or setup process.
Correct time and time-zone data helps Windows validate update metadata and secure connections. If the clock repeatedly becomes wrong after a restart, investigate the computer’s time source or firmware battery separately.
Should I run DISM and SFC for 0x00878617?
