At present, Microsoft’s published tables for Windows activation, Windows Update, and Windows upgrade or installation errors do not map 0x0080B061 to a defined cause. The hexadecimal number alone is not enough to select a repair. The same text could be copied incorrectly, generated by a component that is not Windows itself, or displayed by a specific subsystem whose documentation uses a different error catalog.
One unrelated exact-code search result treats 0x0080B061 as a Win32 COLORREF representation of the color #160b08. That is a color value, not evidence that Windows is reporting a color-related failure. If the code came from a screenshot, optical character recognition, or a handwritten note, compare every character with the original dialog before troubleshooting.

Microsoft’s activation guidance says an error code that is not listed should be checked again after running the relevant troubleshooter and then taken to Microsoft Support. That advice is important here: identify the subsystem first, then use the documented procedure for that subsystem rather than a generic “0x0080B061 fix.”
How should I verify the error before changing Windows?
Capture enough context to distinguish an update, activation, setup, or application problem. These checks are safe and prevent a repair intended for one subsystem from damaging another.
- Copy the entire message. Include the title of the dialog, any accompanying text, and whether Windows offers a Retry, Troubleshoot, Activate, or Close button. Do not rely on memory of the number alone.
- Record the location. Note whether it appeared in Settings, Windows Update, Windows Setup, Event Viewer, a command window, or a named third-party application. If an application is involved, write down its exact name and version.
- Record the Windows build. Press

Managed work or school computers may also have policies that block changes or route updates through an organization’s service.

Windows 10: use the Windows Update troubleshooter in Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security.
- Select Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply the suggested repair, restart when required, and return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and record any new code or message.
Free Windows Update software support, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 machine can therefore show update failures in a support context that differs from Windows 11. The end-of-support date does not, by itself, explain 0x0080B061; it changes which assistance and update channel may be available.

Only use deeper repairs when the symptoms point to update corruption or a documented component-store problem. Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance describes several patterns for selected error conditions, including checking firewall or proxy filtering, redownloading an update, resetting update caches, and restarting at the required points. None of these procedures is established as a code-specific cure for 0x0080B061.

sfc /scannowRun DISM first, let it complete, then run System File Checker. These commands repair selected Windows image and system-file conditions; they are not proof that 0x0080B061 itself is fixed. If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, stop and use the error details to choose an appropriate Microsoft-supported source rather than downloading random image files.
Also check whether security software, a proxy, a metered connection, or an organization’s firewall is filtering Microsoft update traffic. Activation can fail after a substantial hardware change, a reinstalled edition that does not match the license, or use of a key on more devices than the license terms allow. - Write down the application name, version, and the action that triggered the message.
- Capture the full dialog or log entry, including any module name or file path.
- Check the application’s own documentation for that exact version and code.
- Use the vendor’s support channel and provide the reproduction steps, Windows edition, version, and build from
winver. - Avoid deleting DLLs, reinstalling Windows, or changing activation data unless the application vendor’s instructions specifically require it.
If the same number later appears in Windows Update or Activation, handle that occurrence separately; identical hexadecimal text does not prove that two products share an error catalog.

What information should I give support if the code remains?
Prepare a compact record instead of sending only the hexadecimal number. Include the exact text copied from the dialog, a screenshot if permitted, the page or program that displayed it, the date and time, your Windows edition, version, and build from winver, whether the device is online, and what changed immediately before the error. List each troubleshooter you ran, the code it produced afterward, and whether a restart changed the symptom.
