Error 0x0080234F does not have a confirmed, standard meaning in Microsoft’s current Windows 10 or Windows 11 Device Manager code list. The safest fix is to first identify where the hexadecimal string appears—Device Manager, a Wi-Fi or Ethernet dialog, a VPN client, Windows Update, an OEM utility, or another application. The screen and affected component determine whether you should run a network troubleshooter, reset networking commands, repair a driver, verify VPN settings, or contact the software or hardware vendor. Do not treat the code alone as proof that a network card is broken, that Windows is infected, or that a particular registry change will solve the problem.
What is error 0x0080234F?
Microsoft’s published Device Manager table covers problem codes 1 through 57, including names such as CM_PROB_FAILED_INSTALL, CM_PROB_FAILED_DRIVER_LOAD and CM_PROB_NEED_CLASS_CONFIG. The exact string 0x0080234F is not listed. Microsoft also notes that its Device Manager article does not contain every possible code and directs users with unlisted codes to the hardware manufacturer or Microsoft Support.

Identify the originating screen before changing Windows
| Where the message appears | What it may involve | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Device Manager | A device status or driver installation problem | Open the device’s Properties and read the Device status text and named device. |
| Wi-Fi settings or Get Help | Wireless connection, adapter, authentication or IP configuration | Run the Windows Network and Internet troubleshooter and record its findings. |
| Ethernet notification | Cable, router port, adapter, driver or network stack | Check the cable and link lights before resetting software. |
| VPN connection window | Saved VPN profile, server, sign-in method, WAN Miniport or IP/Winsock components | Verify the profile supplied by your VPN provider or workplace. |
| Windows Update or an OEM utility | An update workflow or manufacturer-specific component | Use the utility’s complete message and support channel rather than assuming a Windows network fault. |
What should I record before trying a fix?
Capturing the context makes it possible to choose a reversible remedy and gives a support technician useful evidence if the code remains unresolved.

- Copy the complete message, including any text before or after
0x0080234F. A short phrase such as “parameter is incorrect” can point to a different branch than a driver-installation message. - Write down the application, dialog or Windows page that displayed it. Note whether it was Device Manager, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, a native Windows VPN, a third-party VPN, Windows Update or an OEM tool.
- Record the affected device name, such as the exact wireless adapter, Ethernet controller, WAN Miniport, printer or other component. In Device Manager, right-click the device, choose Properties, and read Device status.
- Note what changed immediately beforehand: a Windows update, driver installation, VPN profile change, router change, cable swap, sleep/hibernate event or application update.
- Record whether other devices can connect to the same network and whether the problem affects Wi-Fi, Ethernet, VPN or a non-network component. Do not run a network reset merely because the hexadecimal value looks unfamiliar.
How do I fix 0x0080234F when it appears in Device Manager?
Device Manager is the correct starting point only when the code is shown in a device’s Properties window. The unlisted value does not identify a specific failed part, so use the device name and the Device status explanation to select the next step.
1. Inspect the device and status text
- Press Windows key+X and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category that matches the hardware, such as Network adapters, Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties. On the General tab, read Device status and note the manufacturer and model.
- Use the exact status wording, hardware identity and recent change when consulting the PC or hardware manufacturer’s support site. Microsoft advises seeking vendor or Microsoft Support help for codes not covered by its table.
2. Avoid guessing from the hexadecimal value
Do not convert 0x0080234F into a familiar Device Manager number or assume it means “bad network card.” The published table does not map this value to a standard Windows problem code, and no reliable source establishes its cause, frequency or success rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I troubleshoot a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection?
Use these steps when the code appears during a network problem. Stop when the connection is restored; each later step changes more settings.
1. Run Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open Get Help and start the automated Network and Internet troubleshooter. Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance uses this path for common Wi-Fi symptoms. Follow its prompts and save any adapter or configuration finding it reports.
2. Check the physical connection
For Ethernet, firmly reconnect the cable at both the PC and router or switch. Confirm that it is plugged into the intended ports, try another cable if one is available, and restart the modem or router when appropriate. These checks separate a physical link failure from a Windows configuration problem.

- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
For Wi-Fi, confirm that the correct wireless network is selected and that another device can reach it. If only one computer is affected, concentrate on that computer’s adapter, driver and saved network configuration rather than replacing the router.
3. Reset the networking commands in sequence
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Run each command, pressing Enter after each one:
netsh winsock resetnetsh int ip resetipconfig /releaseipconfig /renewipconfig /flushdns
Restart Windows after the commands complete, then test the affected connection. These commands reset Winsock and TCP/IP components, obtain a new address and clear the DNS resolver cache; they do not identify why the original hexadecimal string appeared.
How do I update or reinstall the network adapter driver?
A driver change is appropriate only after you have identified the affected adapter and confirmed that the symptom is tied to that device. Microsoft recommends obtaining a compatible backup driver from the PC or hardware manufacturer’s website before uninstalling a network adapter, because an offline computer may not be able to download one afterward.
Update without removing the current driver
- In Device Manager, expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the named Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter and choose Update driver.
- Use the available Windows search option or select a driver package supplied by the PC or adapter manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and check whether the original symptom returns. Record the current and newly installed driver versions for support.
Clean reinstall when an update does not help
- Download and save the compatible driver package before removing anything. If the computer has no working connection, use another computer and removable storage.
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected adapter and choose Uninstall device. Use the option to remove the driver package only when the manufacturer’s replacement is ready and you understand the consequence.
- Restart Windows. Microsoft notes that Windows may detect the hardware and reinstall the adapter automatically.
- If it does not return, open Device Manager, select Action, then Scan for hardware changes, or run the saved manufacturer installer.
Do not uninstall an unrelated adapter simply because its name contains “WAN,” “Bluetooth” or “Virtual.” Match the device to the error window and keep the backup driver available.

When should I use Windows Network reset?
Use Network reset only as a last resort. Microsoft explicitly places it after the other troubleshooting steps because it removes installed network adapters and resets their settings to defaults.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. Windows 10 provides the equivalent option under Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset.
- Read the warning, select Reset now, and allow Windows to restart.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi, re-enter required network information and test Ethernet again.
A network reset can require VPN clients to be reinstalled or configured again. Microsoft also warns that Hyper-V virtual switches may need to be recreated or reconfigured. Before using it, record VPN profiles, virtual-network settings and any non-default adapter configuration you will need to restore.
What if 0x0080234F appears while connecting to a VPN?
Treat a VPN-originating message as a profile or VPN-component problem until proven otherwise. Windows 10 and Windows 11 use a saved VPN profile containing the provider’s server address, VPN type and sign-in method; those values must match the settings supplied by the provider or workplace.
Verify the saved profile
- Open Settings > Network & internet > VPN and select the affected profile.
- Check the server address, VPN type and sign-in method against the provider or workplace instructions.
- Re-enter credentials or recreate the profile only when you have the correct settings. Do not change the VPN type at random.
Conditional WAN Miniport repair
A WatchGuard support case for a Windows native-VPN “parameter is incorrect” message recommends running these commands:
netsh int ip resetnetsh int ipv6 resetnetsh winsock reset
After restarting, that case also recommends uninstalling and rescanning the WAN Miniport adapters in Device Manager. This is a conditional procedure for a VPN symptom, not proof that every occurrence of 0x0080234F has the same cause. If the message comes from a third-party VPN, use that application’s support instructions before altering Windows adapters.

Can a USB-to-Ethernet adapter help diagnose the problem?
If the PC has no built-in Ethernet port, Microsoft says a USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide a wired connection path. It is a diagnostic or connectivity accessory, not a code-specific cure: a successful wired test can help distinguish a Wi-Fi path problem from a broader Internet, router or Windows networking issue. Install the adapter with its compatible driver and test it without removing the existing wireless adapter.
Which remedy fits the symptom?
| Observed symptom | Least-disruptive next step | Escalation if it fails | Configuration risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Code is in a device’s Properties window | Read Device status and identify the exact hardware. | Obtain the manufacturer’s driver or contact vendor support. | Low until a driver is removed. |
| Wi-Fi fails but Ethernet works | Run Get Help’s Network and Internet troubleshooter; inspect the Wi-Fi adapter. | Update or reinstall the identified wireless driver. | Saved wireless settings may need attention after resets. |
| Ethernet has no link | Check cable, router port and adapter link indicators. | Run the networking commands, then investigate the adapter driver. | Command resets are generally reversible after restart. |
| Both wired and wireless connections fail | Run the command sequence and verify router or modem status. | Consider Network reset last. | Network reset removes adapters and can disrupt VPN or Hyper-V settings. |
| Native Windows VPN fails | Verify profile, server, VPN type and sign-in method. | Use the conditional IP, IPv6, Winsock and WAN Miniport procedure. | Profile and VPN configuration may need to be recreated. |
| Code appears in an OEM or other application | Capture the application’s full message and version. | Follow that vendor’s support path. | Windows network changes may be unrelated. |
What should I avoid when troubleshooting this code?
- Do not claim that the hexadecimal value itself proves a failed network card, corrupted Windows installation or malware.
- Do not run Network reset before recording VPN profiles, Hyper-V switches and custom adapter settings.
- Do not uninstall a network adapter without first obtaining a compatible driver, especially on a computer that is already offline.
- Do not use a registry cleaner or an unverified driver package as a substitute for identifying the originating screen and device.
- Do not apply a VPN-specific WAN Miniport procedure to a printer, display, USB or unrelated application error.
- Do not expect a single command sequence to repair an OEM utility or third-party VPN that is producing its own error code.
