How to Fix Error 0x00300036 on Windows 11 and 10

Error 0x00300036 has no confirmed, universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 fix. Microsoft’s current update and activation documentation does not identify it as a standard Windows code. In one older Windows XP-era report, the string appeared inside an Explorer.exe “memory could not be read” crash dialog, where it was a hexadecimal memory address rather than a Windows Update or activation code. The correct fix therefore depends on where the message appears: during an update, activation, an application crash, or a blue screen. Identify that context first, then follow the matching procedure below.

What does error 0x00300036 mean?

By itself, 0x00300036 is ambiguous. Microsoft’s current Windows 10 and Windows 11 update and activation references do not map this value to a documented remedy. Microsoft advises contacting support when an activation code is not listed, and using the Windows Update troubleshooter for update failures.

The only exact-match report located is from the Windows XP era. It shows an Explorer.exe dialog in French containing text equivalent to: “The instruction at ‘0x7360165b’ referenced memory at ‘0x00300036’. The memory could not be read.” In that incident, 0x00300036 was the memory address that could not be read during an application crash. That old report does not prove that every modern Windows 10 or 11 message containing the same characters has the same cause.

Do not assume the string is a virus, a Windows activation failure, or a stop code until you have captured the complete message and its location. The process name, faulting module, event-log entry, and the action that triggered the error are more useful than the hexadecimal value alone.

How do I identify which 0x00300036 problem I have?

Write down the complete dialog before closing it. Record the application or process named, any DLL or module, the exact wording, when it occurs, and any recent update, installation, driver, firmware, or hardware change.

Where the string appears Clues to look for Use this workflow
Windows Update It appears while downloading or installing updates, or in Windows Update history. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, repair update components if necessary, then check for updates again.
Windows activation It appears in Settings > System > Activation or in an activation dialog. Confirm the edition with winver, run the Activation troubleshooter, and contact Microsoft if the code is not listed.
Application or Explorer crash A program name, Explorer.exe, an instruction address, or “memory could not be read” is shown. Inspect the application and event details, then repair the named program, update affected drivers, and test memory and hardware if crashes continue.
Blue screen The screen says the PC ran into a problem, shows a stop code, or restarts unexpectedly. Treat the displayed stop code as the diagnostic key. Review event logs, updates, firmware, drivers, hardware tests, and memory dumps.

If none of these descriptions fits, take a screenshot or copy the text exactly. A shortened search phrase such as “Windows 11 error 0x00300036 fix” omits the information needed to select a reliable remedy.

How do I fix 0x00300036 when it appears during Windows Update?

Use this path only when the error occurs while Windows is checking, downloading, or installing updates. The update troubleshooter is not a general-purpose repair for application crashes.

Run the Windows 11 troubleshooter

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and select Run. Follow the recommendations shown by Get Help or the troubleshooter.
  3. Restart the computer, open Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Run the Windows 10 troubleshooter

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  2. Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and apply any proposed correction.
  3. Restart Windows and select Check for updates in Windows Update.

Repair update components if the troubleshooter does not help

Microsoft’s broader update guidance includes stopping the Windows Update service, clearing the update cache, starting the service again, checking automatic date and time, and updating third-party drivers. Use an administrator account and save work first. A service reset can remove already-downloaded update files, so Windows may need to download them again.

  1. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Stop the update service with net stop wuauserv.
  3. Open C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in File Explorer and remove its contents. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.
  4. Return to the administrator terminal and run net start wuauserv.
  5. Check Settings > Windows Update again.

If a file is in use and cannot be removed, restart Windows and repeat the procedure before trying more drastic changes. Do not rename or delete unrelated folders under C:Windows.

Repair system files before trying Windows Update again

Damaged component-store or system files can interfere with updates. Microsoft documents running Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) first, followed by System File Checker (SFC):

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Terminal (Admin).
  2. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and wait for it to finish. The process can appear paused for several minutes.
  3. Run sfc /scannow and let verification reach 100 percent.
  4. Restart the computer and try Windows Update again.

If SFC reports files it could not repair, keep the CBS log available for support rather than repeatedly running the same command. If DISM itself fails, note the exact error and code; that result is more actionable than 0x00300036 alone.

Check conditions that commonly block updates

  • Enable automatic date, time, and time-zone settings in Settings > Time & language > Date & time (Windows 11) or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time (Windows 10).
  • Ensure the system drive has enough free space for the update and its temporary files.
  • Install current drivers from the computer or device manufacturer when a driver was recently changed or the update repeatedly fails around a device.
  • Disconnect nonessential USB devices temporarily if the failure began after adding hardware.

How do I fix 0x00300036 during Windows activation?

Activation errors require a different workflow. Do not use update-cache commands or application-crash fixes unless the same computer also has a separate problem.

  1. Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. Record the Windows version and build shown in the About Windows dialog.
  2. Open Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10.
  3. Run the automated Activation troubleshooter in Get Help when it is offered. Follow its prompts and restart if requested.
  4. If 0x00300036 is not listed in Microsoft’s activation information, or the troubleshooter changes the displayed code, contact Microsoft support and provide the new code, your edition, and the complete message.

Keep proof of the license or the Microsoft account associated with the digital license available. A product-key change, motherboard replacement, or edition mismatch can create activation problems, but none of those causes is established by the hexadecimal string alone.

How do I fix an Explorer.exe or application crash showing 0x00300036?

If the dialog names Explorer.exe or another application and says that memory could not be read, treat 0x00300036 as a clue from the crash dialog, not as a confirmed Windows system code.

Capture the faulting component

  • Note the exact application name and the “faulting module” or DLL, if shown.
  • Record whether the crash occurs at startup, when opening a file, after right-clicking, or during a particular task.
  • Write down recent application installs, shell extensions, driver updates, firmware changes, or new hardware.
  • Check Event Viewer: right-click Start, choose Event Viewer, then inspect Windows Logs > Application around the crash time. Look for the application name, faulting module, exception code, and timestamp.

Event Viewer can identify a component even when the pop-up contains only a memory address. Preserve the event details as text for the software or hardware vendor; do not rely on a cropped screenshot that omits the module name.

Repair the named application

Once the failing program is known, install its current release or use Windows’ repair option when available: Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the application, open its advanced options, and choose Repair or Reset if those buttons are provided. Reset can remove that application’s local settings, so back up important configuration first. If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application from its legitimate publisher.

Do not remove random DLL files or download replacement DLLs from unverified sites. A DLL named in Event Viewer may be part of Windows, a driver, a shell extension, or the application itself; its ownership must be established before changing it.

Test whether the problem is broader than one application

  • Install pending Windows updates and current firmware and drivers appropriate for the computer.
  • Check free space on the Windows drive.
  • Run the built-in Windows Memory Diagnostic: press Windows key + R, enter mdsched.exe, choose to restart and check now, and allow the test to complete.
  • If crashes occur in several unrelated applications, run the manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics and record any error identifiers.

A memory test that reports an error points to a hardware or memory-configuration investigation; it does not identify 0x00300036 as the cause. Repeated crashes after a recent driver or firmware change justify rolling back or reinstalling that specific component through the manufacturer’s supported procedure.

What should I do if 0x00300036 appears with a blue screen?

First verify that the displayed value is a Windows stop code, not an address embedded in an application dialog. Stop errors halt Windows to prevent continued unsafe operation, and the stop code shown on the blue screen is the key value for diagnosis.

  1. Photograph the entire blue screen, including the stop-code name and any “What failed” filename.
  2. After Windows restarts, open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and review events at the crash time.
  3. Install current Windows updates, firmware, and drivers, prioritizing components named in the event log.
  4. Disconnect recently installed hardware and run memory and manufacturer hardware tests.
  5. Check that the system drive has adequate free space and that Windows can create a dump file.

For recurring crashes, configure automatic or small memory dumps in System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings. A dump can be opened in WinDbg, where the debugger’s analysis identifies likely modules and call stacks. If you are not comfortable interpreting a dump, provide the file and the stop-code details to Microsoft support or the relevant hardware or software vendor.

How can I collect useful evidence before contacting support?

Support can act faster when the report distinguishes an address from a documented code. Include:

  • Windows edition, version, and build from winver.
  • The complete error text, including the application, instruction address, and module if present.
  • The date and time, what you were doing, and whether the failure reproduces.
  • Recent updates, application installations, driver or firmware changes, and hardware additions.
  • Relevant Event Viewer entries from the Application or System log.
  • Any Windows Update history entry, activation status, blue-screen stop code, or memory-test result.

Do not send product keys, passwords, recovery codes, or personal files in a public forum. Redact those items while leaving technical fields such as version, module name, and exception code visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is error 0x00300036 dangerous or a sign of malware?

The hexadecimal value alone does not establish malware, hardware failure, or a damaged Windows installation. In the historical Explorer.exe report, it represented a memory address in a crash dialog. Safety depends on the surrounding behavior: an unexpected executable, suspicious download, or security alert requires a separate security investigation, while a reproducible crash after a driver change calls for driver and hardware troubleshooting.

Keep Microsoft Defender and other security software current, but do not disable protection merely to make the message disappear. If a security product identifies a specific file, follow that product’s quarantine and support procedures rather than deleting files named only by an ambiguous address.

When should I stop troubleshooting and escalate?

Escalate when the code appears in more than one context, the computer repeatedly blue-screens, memory tests report errors, an update reset does not complete, or the event log names a protected Windows component you cannot safely repair. Provide the evidence list above and tell support which procedures you already completed. Microsoft specifically directs users to support when an activation code is not listed, while application and driver faults may require the relevant software or hardware vendor.

There is no evidence for a guaranteed one-command repair of 0x00300036. The reliable approach is to identify the context, apply only the matching workflow, and use the full dialog, event log, or dump to narrow the failing component.

It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before subscription; results vary, it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same fix for 0x00300036 on Windows 10 and Windows 11?

The diagnostic process is similar, but the Settings paths differ. Windows 11 places troubleshooters under System > Troubleshoot, while Windows 10 uses Update & Security > Troubleshoot; follow the path for your installed version.

Why does the error mention a memory address instead of a normal Windows code?

Application crash dialogs often print hexadecimal instruction and memory addresses. In the older Explorer.exe report, 0x00300036 was the address that could not be read, so the address alone could not identify the damaged program or hardware.

Should I reinstall Windows when this code appears?

A reinstall is not justified by the string alone. First identify whether the failure is an update, activation, application, or stop-code problem and inspect the event details; reinstalling can erase data without addressing a faulty driver or hardware component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where can I find the full crash details after closing the pop-up?

Open Event Viewer from the Start context menu and check Windows Logs > Application for application crashes or Windows Logs > System for stop errors. Match the timestamp and copy the faulting application, module, and exception fields.
