What should I do before changing Windows?

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Windows 11: open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run.
- Windows 10: open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any suggested repair, restart, and try the update again. If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, continue with the cache reset rather than repeatedly running it.
Reset the Windows Update cache
This procedure removes downloaded update payloads, not your personal documents. Use an administrator account.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) by right-clicking Start and choosing the administrator option.
- Stop the update service by entering
net stop wuauservand pressing Enter. If Windows says the service is already stopped, continue. - Open File Explorer, enter

Run these commands in an elevated console in the order shown. DISM repairs the Windows component store; System File Checker then replaces corrupted protected files using that repaired store.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannowWait for each command to reach 100 percent. A message that no integrity violations were found means SFC did not detect protected-file corruption; it does not identify the unknown component that generated 0x00043F15. Restart and retry Windows Update after both commands finish.

How do I fix the code during a Windows upgrade or installation?

Use Event Viewer to identify the source
- Press
Win + Xand select Event Viewer, or search for it from Start. - Choose Windows Logs > Application for application errors or Windows Logs > System for service, driver, and hardware events.
- Use Filter Current Log to narrow the time range to when the pop-up appeared. Open warnings and errors around that timestamp.
- Record the Source, Event ID, Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and the full General message. These details identify the component more reliably than the hexadecimal value.
Compare normal startup with Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers and services. If the message disappears there, a startup program, optional driver, or third-party service is more likely than core Windows files.

When the message appears only in one title, it is not evidence that Windows itself owns the code. Use the application’s supported repair path.
- Update the game or application through its official launcher or vendor channel.
- Use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-integrity command if available.
- Temporarily remove recently installed add-ons, overlays, or mods and test with a clean profile. Back up save files first.
- Check the application’s log folder for a timestamp matching the failure. Include the full log and Windows Event Viewer details when contacting support.

- Do not delete random DLLs, registry keys, or folders because a search result says they are “related.” Removing a shared file can create additional failures.
- Do not repeatedly run registry cleaners or generic “one-click” repair scripts. They can change system state without identifying the component that produced the message.
- Do not install an unverified driver package based only on the hexadecimal code. Match any driver to the exact device and computer model, and keep a rollback option.
- Do not disable security software permanently. If it must be removed for an upgrade test, use the vendor’s documented uninstall method and restore protection afterward.
- Do not keep retrying an upgrade while disk checks report physical errors; back up data and arrange drive service.
When should I escalate the problem?
Escalate when the emitting component is identified but its supported repair fails, when crashes continue in Safe Mode, when hardware tests report errors, or when Event Viewer shows recurring storage, memory, or firmware faults. Give the vendor the exact message, Windows edition and build, Event Viewer source and event ID, recent changes, and the steps already completed. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft says that after this date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, so plan a supported upgrade or a vendor-supported alternative rather than expecting new Windows 10 fixes.
