Error 0x0000370A is a Windows Side-by-Side (SxS) identity validation error. Microsoft names it ERROR_SXS_INVALID_IDENTITY_ATTRIBUTE_VALUE: an attribute in an application or assembly identity contains a value outside the legal range. The hexadecimal code does not identify the damaged application, manifest, update package or registry entry, so the reliable fix is to connect the code to the operation that triggered it, then repair Windows or the affected program in the least disruptive order.
Start by recording the complete message, restart, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, remove temporary hardware or security-software interference, and repair Windows with DISM followed by System File Checker (SFC) when corruption is plausible. An application-specific failure usually calls for repairing or reinstalling that application; failures across several programs or during servicing point toward Windows component-store or update repair.

Microsoft defines 0x0000370A as ERROR_SXS_INVALID_IDENTITY_ATTRIBUTE_VALUE, meaning “The value of an attribute in an identity is not within the legal range.” Windows uses Side-by-Side assemblies and application identities to validate which components an application is allowed to load. During that validation, one identity attribute has a value Windows cannot accept.
The code is a diagnosis, not a complete explanation. It does not reveal whether the bad value belongs to one program’s manifest, a shared assembly, a Windows update package, or another servicing record. No authoritative prevalence, success-rate or time-to-fix figure has been published for this code, so treat any precise percentage or promised repair time with suspicion.

Why the trigger matters
- One application at launch: the program’s files, manifest, a shared runtime or its registration are the first suspects.
- Software installation: the installer, its prerequisites or a pending Windows servicing operation may be involved.
- Windows Update or feature servicing: a component-store inconsistency, pending update or package problem is more likely.
- Several unrelated applications: investigate Windows component and system-file health before repeatedly reinstalling individual programs.
What should I record before trying a fix?
Capture the context while it is still visible. Write down the application name and version, the exact action that produced the error, whether the message appears every time, and any text surrounding the hexadecimal code. If the error came from Windows Update or setup, preserve the complete setup or event entry rather than copying only 0x0000370A.
- Reproduce the failure once, if doing so does not risk data loss.
- Take a screenshot or copy the full dialog and any accompanying path, package or component name.
- Open Event Viewer and review the application or setup-related entry created at the same time. Save the event’s General and Details text for later support.
- Note whether other programs, updates or Windows features fail as well.
- Back up important documents before recovery operations or an in-place repair that can change system state.
This record determines whether to stay focused on one application or move directly to Windows servicing repair. It also gives a technician the information that the bare code omits.

Use low-disruption actions first. They clear a transient servicing state and establish whether the failure is update-related without changing personal files.
- Restart Windows. A pending reboot can leave component operations incomplete. After signing in, repeat the original action once.
- Check available disk space. Windows Update and component servicing need working room for downloaded and expanded packages. Free space on the system drive before attempting a major update or repair.
- Disconnect nonessential hardware. Shut down and unplug USB storage, docks, printers, card readers and other peripherals that are not needed for the repair. Reconnect them after the operation succeeds.
- Pause other installers and system-tuning utilities. Allow only the update or repair you are testing to change system files.
If the message names one application and Windows itself updates normally, skip repeated system-wide changes and proceed to that application’s repair section below.
How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter?
Microsoft provides an automated Windows Update troubleshooter through Get Help on Windows 11. The Settings path remains useful for reaching the built-in troubleshooter controls; Windows 10 uses a different navigation path.

Windows 11
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select System, then Troubleshoot, and choose Other troubleshooters.
- Next to Windows Update, select Run. If Windows opens Get Help, follow its diagnostic prompts to completion.
- Restart when prompted, then return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and apply any suggested correction.
- Restart and check for updates again from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
If the troubleshooter reports that no issue was found, continue with the hardware, driver and system-file checks rather than assuming the SxS identity is valid.
Could hardware, drivers or security software be interfering?
Yes. An installer or upgrade can fail while a peripheral driver or third-party security product is holding files or filtering setup activity. Remove only likely interference, and make sure you can reinstall any security product before uninstalling it.
Check hardware and drivers
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external drives and docking stations.
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting it.
- Look for a device with a warning icon. Open its Properties to read the status, then use the manufacturer’s current package to update it, or uninstall the device only when you know Windows can redetect it.
- Restart and test the original operation with the minimum hardware attached.
A warning icon does not prove that the device caused 0x0000370A, so record the original state and change one device at a time. If the failure concerns graphics, audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB or another specific device, prioritize its driver before broader recovery.
Temporarily remove conflicting security software
Microsoft advises removing third-party antivirus or antispyware when it interferes with an upgrade, provided you know how to reinstall it afterward. Use the product’s normal uninstall process, restart, perform the update or repair, and reinstall protection immediately afterward if it was removed. Do not interpret the SxS code as proof of malware, and do not leave the computer without protection longer than necessary.
Can DISM and SFC repair 0x0000370A?
DISM and SFC are Microsoft’s built-in repair path when Windows component-store or system-file corruption is suspected. They cannot identify every invalid application identity, but they can replace damaged Windows components that cause multiple programs or servicing operations to fail. Run them in the documented order: DISM first, then SFC.

- Save work and open Command Prompt as an administrator. Search for Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator; approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand press Enter. Let the operation finish; do not close the window because progress can pause for several minutes. - Restart Windows after DISM completes, even if it reports that no corruption was found.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run
sfc /scannow. - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Read the result, restart if requested, and retry the operation that produced 0x0000370A.
How to interpret the results
- If DISM repairs corruption and SFC completes successfully, test Windows Update and the affected application before making more changes.
- If SFC says it found and repaired files, restart and test again; keep the result text if the error returns.
- If either command reports that it could not complete, repeat the command once after a restart and record the exact message. Do not delete folders in the component store or replace system files manually.
- If both commands report no integrity violations while only one application fails, concentrate on that application’s installation and manifest rather than repeatedly running system scans.
What if 0x0000370A happens only during Windows Update?
When the error appears only while updating or servicing Windows, repair the update path before reinstalling unrelated applications. Install the latest servicing-stack and cumulative updates that match the installed Windows version. Confirm the edition and version in Settings > System > About on Windows 11 or Settings > System > About on Windows 10 so the package applies to this installation.
Try the normal update channel first
- Restart after running the troubleshooter.
- Open the Windows Update page and install every offered servicing-stack, cumulative or prerequisite update.
- Restart between update rounds when Windows requests it.
- Retry the operation that produced the SxS error.
Install a failed package manually
If the same package repeatedly fails, Microsoft documents downloading the applicable package from the Microsoft Update Catalog and installing it manually. Search the catalog using the exact update identifier and the architecture and Windows version shown in Settings. Do not install a package for a different edition or architecture, and keep the original failure text in case manual installation also fails.
After a successful manual installation, restart and run Windows Update again so that dependent updates can finish. If the catalog package refuses to install, return to DISM and SFC results, check disk space and inspect the setup event for the component name instead of trying random packages.
How do I fix the error when one application triggers it?
A single-program failure usually has a narrower remedy than a system reset. First identify the program and its publisher, then use Windows’ repair option or the program’s own maintenance tool. Preserve settings and data before removing the application.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application. If Advanced options offers Repair, use it first; this attempts to correct files without removing personal app data.
- Restart and test the application. If the error remains, use Reset only after reading what data the reset removes.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the application through its normal uninstaller, restart, and download a current installer from the publisher’s official source.
- Install required prerequisites offered by that installer, then test before restoring optional plug-ins or extensions.
If reinstalling one program fixes the launch failure while Windows Update and other applications work, the incident was local to that program’s identity or files. If several applications begin showing the code, stop cycling through reinstalls and return to component-store and servicing checks.

What escalation options are safe when the error persists?
Escalate in increasing order of disruption and data risk. Back up important files and, where possible, create a separate copy of application data before each recovery step.
Try Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If the operation works there, a startup driver, service or security product is a stronger suspect. Use Safe Mode for diagnosis and removal of the identified conflict; it is not a permanent repair by itself.
Inspect recent changes
Review recently installed drivers, applications and updates. If the timing is clear, uninstall the recent item through its supported Windows interface, restart and test. Avoid deleting registry entries or manifest files by hand because the error code does not identify a safe entry to remove.
Use System Restore or another recovery option
System Restore can return system files, drivers and configuration to an earlier restore point while leaving personal documents in place, but applications or updates installed afterward may be removed. Choose a restore point dated before the first failure, review the affected-program list, and keep a backup before proceeding. If no suitable point exists, use the recovery options available for your edition and installation media; a reset or reinstall is a last resort after less disruptive repairs fail.
Which fix should I try first?
Choose by trigger, scope, disruption and data risk rather than by the hexadecimal code alone.

What should I avoid while troubleshooting?
- Do not assume the code proves a virus, a failing hard drive or one particular application.
- Do not download replacement DLLs or registry “fixes” from unverified sites. The code describes an identity attribute, not a missing file that can safely be swapped.
- Do not run several cleaners, registry editors or driver installers at once; you will lose the ability to tell which change mattered.
- Do not force-shut down DISM, SFC or an update while it is actively servicing files.
- Do not install an update package intended for a different Windows release, edition or processor architecture.
- Do not reset or reinstall Windows before backing up documents, browser data and application-specific files.
Does Windows 10 still receive support?
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer can still boot and run installed software after that date, but ordinary security and feature servicing are no longer provided under standard support. When troubleshooting a Windows 10 installation in 2026, verify whether a supported upgrade path to Windows 11 exists for the hardware and whether the failing operation depends on an update that is no longer offered for that installation.
When should I seek technical help?
Ask the application’s publisher or a qualified Windows technician for help when the full event text identifies a proprietary component, when DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, or when the error appears during every update and recovery option. Provide the Windows edition and version, application name and version, exact trigger, complete error text, Event Viewer details, DISM and SFC result messages, recent driver or update changes, and the steps already attempted. That evidence is far more useful than reporting only “0x0000370A.”

Can error 0x0000370A damage my personal files?
The code describes an identity-validation failure, not a command to erase documents. Normal troubleshooting such as the troubleshooter, DISM and SFC is designed to repair Windows components, but uninstall, reset, restore and reinstall operations can change applications or settings, so back up important files first.
Should I run SFC before DISM?
Use DISM first when Windows component corruption is suspected, restart, and then run sfc /scannow. SFC relies on the component store as its repair source, so reversing the order can leave it without a healthy source.
Why does the error appear only when one program starts?
That pattern points toward the program’s own manifest, prerequisites or registration rather than a system-wide failure. Record the complete SxS event, try the app’s Repair option, and reinstall from the publisher if repair does not help.

Can I fix this without reinstalling Windows?
Often, yes. Restarting, Windows Update troubleshooting, removing interference, repairing the affected application, and running DISM followed by SFC are less disruptive options. Use Safe Mode, System Restore or a reset only when those targeted steps and update repairs do not resolve the failure.
