Error 0x00002757 means WSAEREMOTE: “Item is not available locally.” Windows raises this Winsock status when an application tries to use a remote resource that the computer cannot provide or reach in the current context. It is not a diagnosis of one broken Windows component, so the correct fix depends on whether you were opening a mapped drive, using a network share, running Windows Update, or installing Windows.
Start by recording the exact action, path, server or service, and time of the failure. Then verify the remote resource and your network before changing Windows files. Use the Windows Update or setup-specific steps only when that is where the error appears.

What does error 0x00002757 mean?
Microsoft maps hexadecimal 0x00002757 to the Winsock error name WSAEREMOTE, defined as Item is not available locally.
The wording comes from Microsoft’s MS-ERREF Win32 Error Codes specification, released November 19, 2024.
Winsock is the Windows networking interface used by applications. In practical terms, an application requested something associated with another computer, share, service, or installation source, but that item was unavailable from the local system at that moment. The code does not tell you whether the cause is a disconnected network, a missing share, permissions, a VPN route, an update cache problem, or setup interference.

Treat the number as a starting clue rather than proof that system files are damaged. A disconnected mapped drive should be handled differently from a Windows Update failure, and both differ from an upgrade that stops while external hardware or security software is attached.
How should I identify the trigger before changing anything?
The trigger determines the safest branch. Write down the details while the error is visible; a hexadecimal code without its surrounding action is rarely enough for an administrator or software vendor to reproduce the problem.

How do I fix 0x00002757 when a mapped drive or network share fails?
Work from the remote resource inward. Do not begin by deleting Windows caches or replacing system files when only one share is unavailable.
1. Confirm that the host and share still exist
Check that the target computer, NAS, or server is powered on and connected. If a colleague or another computer can open the same share, the problem is more likely local to your account, network route, or saved mapping. If nobody can reach it, investigate the host, server service, router, firewall, or VPN before changing this PC.
Open File Explorer and enter the full UNC path directly in the address bar. A missing share, renamed folder, or changed server name can make an old drive letter point to an item that is no longer available. Ask the administrator to confirm the share name and that your account still has permission to read or write it.

2. Reconnect or remap a disconnected drive
- In File Explorer, select This PC and look for the drive showing a red or disconnected indicator.
- Right-click the drive and choose Disconnect if the old mapping is stale.
- Select This PC again, choose See more (or the toolbar’s … menu), then Map network drive.
- Choose a drive letter, enter the confirmed folder path, and select Reconnect at sign-in only if the resource should be available every time you sign in.
- Use Connect using different credentials when the share requires another account. Enter the account in the format supplied by your administrator, then retry the original operation.
If the mapping works only after you manually open the share, Windows may be attempting to use it before the network or VPN is ready at sign-in. In that case, disconnecting the stale mapping and reconnecting after the network is established is a useful diagnostic; it is not a guarantee that the underlying server problem is fixed.
3. Check the local network path
Verify that the PC is on the intended Wi-Fi or Ethernet network. Disconnect and reconnect the interface, then try the same UNC path. If the resource is reachable only over a company VPN, connect to that VPN before opening the drive and check whether split-tunnel rules or a changed VPN profile prevent access.
Temporarily compare results from another device on the same network, but do not disable security controls indiscriminately. A firewall or server policy can block one protocol or port; the administrator of the target system should confirm the required access. If every device fails, focus on the target host, router, VPN, firewall, or server availability rather than Windows system-file repairs.
4. Separate permissions from availability
A credentials prompt, “access denied” message, or a share that opens for another account points to authorization rather than a missing local item. Confirm the account’s share and filesystem permissions, remove obsolete saved credentials only when instructed by the administrator, and test again. Keep the exact error and path for escalation if the target is visible but one operation remains unavailable.
How do I fix 0x00002757 during Windows Update?
Use Microsoft’s supported Windows Update sequence first. The labels differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10, and Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; a supported update path may therefore depend on the edition and servicing status of the device.

1. Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 11: open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update, select Run, apply any recommendation, and restart the PC.
Windows 10: open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update. Run the troubleshooter, apply its recommendations, and restart.
After restarting, open Start > Settings > Windows Update in Windows 11, or Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10, then select Check for updates. Some builds expose slightly different menu labels; if a category is absent, search Settings for “troubleshoot” or “Windows Update.”
2. Rebuild the Windows Update download cache
If the same update operation fails after the troubleshooter, Microsoft’s guidance includes stopping the Windows Update service, clearing the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and starting the service again. This targets a damaged or inconsistent update cache; it is not a direct interpretation of WSAEREMOTE.

- Run
net stop wuauserv. Wait for confirmation that the service has stopped. - Open File Explorer, enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and delete the contents of that folder, not the folder itself. If a file is locked, restart and try again, or use the Services console to confirm that Windows Update is stopped. - Return to the elevated terminal and run
net start wuauserv. - Restart Windows and use Check for updates again.
Windows will recreate required download data. Do not delete unrelated folders under C:Windows, and do not interrupt the process while an update is installing.

3. Check date, time, drivers, and system components
In Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time on Windows 10, enable automatic time and use the synchronization control. An incorrect clock can interfere with update services and certificates.
Install current device-driver updates from the computer or device manufacturer’s supported channel, particularly after a major Windows change. If Windows reports component or system-file corruption, run the following in an elevated terminal, allowing each command to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthsfc /scannowRestart after both checks and retry Windows Update. These commands address suspected component or system-file corruption; they do not prove that corruption caused the original WSAEREMOTE status.

Setup has more moving parts than a normal network-share operation. Microsoft recommends reducing external-device and software interference before retrying.
- Unplug nonessential hardware. Disconnect external storage, printers, phones, USB hubs, and docks. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and hardware required to operate the computer.
- Install available Windows and device-driver updates. Complete ordinary updates before launching setup again when the current installation still boots normally.
- Inspect Device Manager. Right-click Start > Device Manager and look for warning icons. Resolve the affected device or obtain a current driver through the supported manufacturer channel.
- Address security-software interference carefully. Microsoft notes that temporarily removing non-Microsoft antivirus or antispyware can be appropriate in some setup failures. Keep installation media and product-key information available, disconnect from untrusted networks when appropriate, and reinstall protection immediately after setup. Do not remove security software merely because the hexadecimal code appears.
- Check the disk. Repair reported disk errors and ensure sufficient free space before another attempt. A failing or nearly full disk can cause setup to fail independently of the WSAEREMOTE definition.
If setup fails again, record the exact phase or percentage, the devices that were connected, and any setup or Event Viewer entry. A successful boot into the previous Windows installation does not establish that the upgrade source or every remote dependency is healthy.
Which fix should I try first?
Choose the narrowest, lowest-risk action that matches the trigger. Reconnect a single share before repairing Windows components; use update-cache steps only when Windows Update is the failing operation; and remove hardware or security interference only in a setup branch.

What information should I collect before asking for help?
If the error returns, provide evidence instead of only the hexadecimal value. Include:
- The application, exact action, and complete path or server name.
- The date and time, Windows edition and version, and whether the computer was on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or a VPN.
- Whether the same resource works from another machine or account.
- Whether the failure began after a password change, server move, driver update, Windows update, or hardware change.
- Related Event Viewer or application-log entries copied with their timestamps and source names.
- For setup, the installation phase, connected external devices, Device Manager warnings, and any disk-check result.
Do not publish passwords, access tokens, private share contents, or product keys in a support forum. An administrator or vendor can use the path, reproducibility, and logs to determine whether the unavailable item is remote, permission-related, update-related, or part of setup.

Can error 0x00002757 be caused by a bad password?
It can appear alongside an access or mapping problem, but the code itself only says that an item is not available locally. If the share is visible and another account can open it, have the administrator verify your share and filesystem permissions and stored credentials.
Does 0x00002757 prove that my PC has malware?
No. WSAEREMOTE is a Winsock availability status, not a malware finding. Investigate the path, server, update operation, or setup stage first and use your normal security tools if you have separate evidence of suspicious activity.
Why does the error disappear when I turn off my VPN?
A VPN can change routes, DNS resolution, or access policy for private shares and services. Record the VPN name and connection state, then ask the network administrator whether the resource is expected to be reachable through that tunnel instead of repeatedly changing Windows files.
Should I edit the registry to clear this error?
There is no general registry setting that corresponds to WSAEREMOTE. Unverified registry edits can create new startup or networking problems, so use the context-specific troubleshooting paths and preserve logs for support.
Will reinstalling Windows fix 0x00002757?
Reinstallation is not a first-line response to a context-dependent Winsock status. If the remote host, share, VPN, or update service remains unavailable, a reinstall can leave the underlying condition unchanged while adding data-loss and setup risk.
