Error 0x000020D1 means “The attribute could not be cached.” Microsoft identifies it as the directory-service error ERROR_DS_CANT_CACHE_ATT, not as a general Windows 11 or Windows 10 failure. Its decimal equivalent is 8401. The code alone does not identify whether an application, a directory operation, a domain controller, or another server condition caused the problem.
There is no Microsoft-published, one-command repair for this code. The reliable way to handle it is to identify the exact operation that returned it, determine which computer and directory role were involved, inspect the matching logs, and then apply the product- or environment-specific guidance for that operation. The steps below show how to do that without making unsupported schema, registry, or replication changes.

Microsoft’s Win32 error-code reference lists 0x000020D1 as ERROR_DS_CANT_CACHE_ATT and defines it as “The attribute could not be cached.” Microsoft’s System Error Codes (8200–8999) list gives the same code as hexadecimal 0x20D1 and decimal 8401.

The neighboring entries in Microsoft’s directory-service catalog concern schema syntax, class caching, removing an attribute cache, and loading the schema. That context shows why this is a directory-service message, but it does not prove which of those areas is failing in your environment.

Why is there no single fix for this error?
The same code can be returned by different software while it is performing different directory operations. A directory administration tool, an application using directory services, or a domain-controller process may all surface the same numeric value. The code does not include the attribute name, the target server, the account used, or the operation that failed.
Microsoft’s references define the value but do not provide a universal repair sequence. Therefore, a restart, a forced replication, a registry edit, a schema change, or a repair utility should not be treated as a guaranteed answer. A third-party recommendation to force synchronization because of “stale replication” is not enough to establish that diagnosis for every occurrence.

What should I record before changing anything?
Capture the evidence while the error is still reproducible. These details determine which diagnostic path is appropriate and prevent a well-intentioned change from destroying the clues needed for support.
- The complete message, including any text before or after
0x000020D1. - The exact application, administrative console, installer, script, or service that displayed it.
- The operation being attempted: for example, reading an object, creating or modifying an attribute, importing a schema element, or completing an application-specific directory task. Use the wording shown by the software rather than guessing.
- The date and time, including the time zone, and whether the failure is repeatable.
- The computer on which the message appeared and the directory server it contacted, if the application reports one.
- The signed-in account or service account, without sharing its password or secret keys.
- Recent changes such as an application upgrade, domain-controller change, schema extension, policy update, network change, or migration.
- Whether other users, applications, or domain controllers see the same failure.
Save screenshots or export the relevant event details before clearing logs. If the message came from a vendor application, preserve its own log files as well as Windows events.
How do I determine whether the problem is on a client, an application, or a domain controller?
Check the computer’s role
On the computer that displayed the error, open Settings > System > About or Control Panel > System and record the Windows edition and build. Then determine whether the computer is a domain controller, a domain member, or a workgroup device. A member computer can display a directory error even though the failing operation is executing on a remote domain controller.
Identify the directory server actually used
Look in the application’s diagnostic output, event details, or verbose logging for a server name, distinguished name, LDAP endpoint, or connection message. Do not assume that the computer showing the dialog is the server that failed. If several domain controllers are available, note which one handled the request and whether the same operation selects a different server after a new logon.

Separate application failures from directory-service failures
If only one application reports the code, compare its version, configuration, service account, and directory endpoint with a working installation. If several unrelated tools fail at the same time, prioritize domain-controller and directory-service logs. This comparison narrows the investigation; it does not by itself identify a root cause.
How do I inspect the relevant Windows logs?
On a domain controller
- Sign in with an account authorized to read event logs.
- Open Event Viewer by pressing
Win+R, enteringeventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. - Review Applications and Services Logs > Directory Service around the recorded time. On systems where the role exposes additional Active Directory-related channels, inspect those as well.
- Also check Windows Logs > System for service, DNS, network, authentication, or startup events at the same minute.
- For each matching event, record the event ID, source, computer, user or service account, attribute or object name, and any error status or diagnostic data.
Use the event’s Details tab and choose the XML view when the rendered description omits fields. Export matching events with Save Selected Events so that support receives the original metadata.
On a client or application server
Check Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System, then inspect the application’s own log directory or administrative console. A client-side event may contain the server name, LDAP operation, or provider that produced the directory status.
Optional read-only PowerShell collection
On a computer that has the relevant log channel, an administrator can collect recent entries without changing configuration:
Get-WinEvent -LogName "Directory Service" -MaxEvents 100 | Format-List TimeCreated,Id,ProviderName,LevelDisplayName,MessageIf that channel is unavailable, use Event Viewer to locate the exact channel name rather than guessing. Filter by the time window of the failure and export the events for review.
What checks can I perform without making a repair claim?
Verify name resolution and reachability
Confirm that the affected computer can resolve the directory server’s fully qualified name and reach the required network services. Compare the result with a computer that performs the same operation successfully. A connectivity problem can prevent an attribute operation from completing, but the presence of this error code does not prove that networking is the cause.

Check authentication and permissions in the operation’s context
Confirm which account the application or Windows service actually uses. A service may run under a different identity from the administrator who launched its console. Review the application’s documented permissions for the specific object and attribute; do not grant broad directory rights merely because the error mentions caching.
Check time and secure-channel symptoms
Compare the system time with the domain’s time source and look for authentication or trust errors in the System log. If the logs show a secure-channel or Kerberos problem, follow the documented remediation for that separate error. Do not treat a time check as proof that the attribute-cache error has been repaired.
Review replication status as evidence, not as a cure
On an authorized domain controller, repadmin /showrepl can display inbound replication partners and the last recorded status. repadmin /replsummary can summarize recent replication failures. These commands are diagnostic; they do not establish that replication is the cause, and they do not make a forced synchronization an appropriate fix.
repadmin /showrepl <DomainControllerName>
repadmin /replsummaryRecord the output with the server name and collection time. If replication errors appear, investigate those errors through the applicable Microsoft or product documentation rather than issuing a blanket synchronization command.
Run domain-controller diagnostics only when the role is confirmed
dcdiag is intended for domain-controller diagnostics. For example, an authorized administrator may run:
dcdiag /test:DNS /vUse the results to identify DNS or directory health symptoms that match the failed operation. Do not run domain-controller repair procedures on a member computer, and do not interpret a clean DNS test as proof that attribute caching is healthy.

What should I do when the failure involves a schema or directory-management tool?
Stop before repeating a schema modification or editing directory objects manually. Write down the exact attribute, class, object, and operation reported by the tool, then consult that tool’s documentation for supported schema prerequisites and rollback procedures.
- Confirm that the schema extension is intended for this forest and Windows Server version.
- Verify that the tool is connected to the directory server and partition documented by its vendor.
- Check whether the account is allowed to perform the operation and whether the tool requires a particular administrative group.
- Review the Directory Service events for a more specific status surrounding the 0x000020D1 entry.
- If a schema change was partially applied, use the vendor’s documented recovery process; do not delete attributes or classes based solely on the cache wording.
Schema changes can affect every domain controller in a forest. A backup, change record, and tested rollback plan are more important than trying unrelated commands quickly.

Treat the application as the primary diagnostic boundary. Enable its supported diagnostic or verbose logging, reproduce the operation once, and compare the failing request with a known-good request. Capture the application version, provider or library, target server, account, object, attribute, and the complete inner error.
Ask the software vendor whether that version supports the directory schema and server role in use. If the vendor identifies a required update or configuration change, apply it first in a test environment. A Windows repair tool cannot substitute for an application-specific correction when the application is issuing an invalid or unsupported directory request.
What if several domain controllers show the error?
Compare timestamps, affected attributes, replication partners, and the originating application. If every server reports the same operation failure, focus on the request, schema, permissions, or application compatibility. If only one server is affected, compare its configuration and logs with a healthy partner and follow your organization’s change-control process before taking it out of service or performing repairs.
Do not infer forest-wide corruption from the number of alerts alone. The error text identifies an attribute-cache failure, not the scope, integrity, or persistence of the underlying directory data.
Which actions should I avoid?
- Do not edit the registry to add, remove, or “refresh” a directory cache setting unless an authoritative product procedure specifically requires it.
- Do not force replication solely because a website claims that stale replication causes every 0x000020D1 report.
- Do not modify the schema or delete an attribute to clear the message.
- Do not repeatedly restart directory services on a production domain controller; a restart can interrupt authentication and may erase useful timing clues without addressing the request that failed.
- Do not install a generic cleaner or registry utility as a response to this directory-service code. The code does not indicate junk files or a general Windows slowdown.
- Do not disable security controls or broaden permissions permanently as a troubleshooting shortcut.
When should I escalate the incident?
Escalate when the error affects production authentication, repeats after a documented application or directory change, appears on multiple domain controllers, or involves a schema operation. Contact the application vendor for an application-generated error and your directory or Microsoft support channel for domain-controller evidence.
Provide a concise incident package:
- Windows edition and build, Windows Server edition and build for each involved domain controller, and the application version.
- The exact hexadecimal and decimal values, complete message text, and first and most recent occurrence.
- The operation, object and attribute names, target server, account type, and reproducibility.
- Exported Directory Service, System, Application, and application-specific events covering the same time window.
- Read-only diagnostic output such as
repadminordcdiag, with sensitive names and credentials redacted appropriately. - A timeline of recent changes and the steps already attempted.
Support can then determine whether the issue is an application request, a permissions or connectivity condition, a server-specific problem, or a directory configuration issue. Keep the original logs; avoid clearing them before the case is reviewed.

How can I tell whether the issue is actually resolved?
Resolution means the original operation completes under the same conditions, the related Directory Service and application logs no longer record the failure, and any underlying diagnostic finding has been addressed through a documented change. Test the operation with the intended account and target server, then monitor for recurrence during the normal workflow.
If the operation succeeds only after switching servers, accounts, or applications, record that difference instead of declaring the directory-service error fixed. The change may have bypassed the failing path without correcting it.

Is 0x20D1 different from 0x000020D1?
No. They are two hexadecimal representations of the same value; leading zeroes do not change the number. Microsoft also lists the decimal equivalent as 8401.

No. The message only says that an attribute could not be cached. It does not establish corruption, data loss, or the scope of a directory problem; those conclusions require the operation details and correlated logs.
Can restarting the computer or domain controller clear the error?
A restart may change which server or process handles a request, but Microsoft does not publish it as a code-specific remedy. On a production domain controller, restarting can interrupt authentication and remove useful timing evidence, so investigate first.
What information will a support engineer need?
Provide the complete message, exact operation, application and Windows versions, target directory server, account type, affected object or attribute, timestamps, and exported events from the Directory Service, System, Application, and application logs.
