Error 0x0000207C means that Active Directory rejected a request because a required attribute was missing. Microsoft names the condition ERROR_DS_MISSING_REQUIRED_ATT: “A required attribute is missing.” It is a directory-service schema error, not a general Windows hardware, driver, or system-file failure. You usually see it while creating or modifying a domain user, group, computer, or custom directory object through LDAP, ADSI, PowerShell, a provisioning product, or an application. The fix is to identify the target object class and operation, determine which attributes that schema requires, add them to the request, and submit it again. Reinstalling Windows, running a disk cleaner, or replacing a driver will not supply a missing Active Directory attribute.
What does error 0x0000207C mean?
The hexadecimal value 0x0000207C is the Active Directory Domain Services status ERROR_DS_MISSING_REQUIRED_ATT. The domain controller validates every LDAP add or modify request against its directory schema. If the request does not contain an attribute required by the selected object class or by that particular operation, the server refuses it and returns this code.

The same code can appear in a Windows 10 or Windows 11 console, script, or business application, but the operating system version is not the cause. The failing component is the directory operation handled by Active Directory. A useful mental model is a form submission: the server knows which fields are mandatory for the object you selected, and it will not commit the object until those fields are present and valid.
Why does Active Directory return this error?
Required attributes are not identical for every object. The request’s objectClass, the operation being performed, and the domain’s schema determine the required set.

General object-creation fields
For ordinary object creation, Active Directory generally expects a naming value such as cn and an objectClass. A request that omits either can fail validation. A distinguished name alone does not replace those attributes; the server still needs the class and the values required by that class.
User, group, computer, and custom classes
User, group, and computer classes add their own requirements before the object is useful. A custom class can add mandatory attributes that are not required for built-in classes. Therefore, copying the attribute list from a successful user request and applying it to a computer or custom object can create a different failure.
ADSI commit timing
In an ADSI user-creation flow, Microsoft requires all mandatory values to be placed in the local object cache before IADs.SetInfo is called. Calling SetInfo first and trying to fill in required fields afterward sends an incomplete add request, which produces 0x0000207C.
Enabled-account constraints
Active Directory’s protocol constraints can require unicodePwd when an account is enabled. A request that attempts to create or enable a user without the required password-related value, or that conflicts with account-control rules, can therefore return the same missing-attribute status. This is separate from the requirement that a user request include sAMAccountName.
What should I check before changing anything?
Capture the failed request and identify exactly what is being created or modified. Guessing at attributes often changes the error into a different schema or syntax error.
- Record the interface. Note whether the operation came from LDAP, ADSI, a PowerShell cmdlet, a graphical administration tool, an identity-provisioning service, or a custom application.
- Record the target. Save the distinguished name, the requested
objectClassvalues, and the destination OU or container. - Save the complete diagnostic. Many clients show a server diagnostic message that names the missing attribute or identifies the constraint that failed. Preserve that text, including any additional LDAP data.
- Separate validation from authorization. A permissions failure, duplicate-name error, invalid syntax error, and unsupported object-class error are different conditions. Confirm that the returned status is specifically
ERROR_DS_MISSING_REQUIRED_ATT. - Identify the domain controller. The controller that handled the request enforces the schema used for that operation. If a provisioning product can target different controllers, note which one processed the failed call.
Do not change several fields at once before you have recorded the original request. Keeping a copy lets you compare the corrected request with the failed one and prevents a second problem from hiding the first.

How do I fix an LDAP or ADSI request?
Correct the request before its commit call. The exact attribute names depend on the target class and your domain schema, but the workflow is consistent.
1. Confirm the object class
Inspect the add request’s objectClass values. Make sure the class is the one intended for the object and that any auxiliary classes are included only when supported by the schema. A typo or an unexpected custom class can produce a required-attribute list you did not anticipate.
2. Add naming and class attributes
For a normal object add, provide cn and objectClass. Use a distinguished name whose parent OU or container exists and where the account used by the operation is allowed to create that class.
3. Add class-specific mandatory values
For a user, include the account fields required by the user class. Microsoft’s ADSI guidance specifically identifies sAMAccountName as mandatory for user creation. A group, computer, or custom object must be checked against its own required set instead of inheriting the user list.

4. Populate the local cache before SetInfo
Set every required property on the ADSI object first, then call IADs.SetInfo once the object is complete. If the account is to be enabled at creation, also satisfy the password and account-control requirements that apply to your domain. If you cannot safely create an enabled account in one request, create it disabled and complete the required account steps in a separate, supported operation.
5. Review values as well as presence
An attribute can be present but still fail if its value has the wrong syntax, encoding, or format. Check that names are valid for the class, that the distinguished name is correctly escaped, and that a password-related value follows the domain’s requirements. If the server now reports invalid syntax rather than a missing attribute, you have moved past the original validation failure and should correct the newly identified value.

6. Submit and compare diagnostics
Retry only after changing the request. If the same code returns, compare the complete attribute set with the schema on the domain controller that processed the operation. If the diagnostic identifies a particular field, add that field at the point where the request is assembled, not after the commit has already been sent.
How do I fix 0x0000207C with PowerShell?
For user creation, use the Active Directory module’s supported New-ADUser parameters. The cmdlet requires SamAccountName, uses Path to select the destination OU or container, and accepts additional LDAP attributes through OtherAttributes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use a minimal, disabled-user creation request
The following pattern supplies the required naming and account fields while leaving the new account disabled until the password and other policy-dependent steps are complete. Replace the example values with the distinguished name and naming convention used in your domain.
New-ADUser `
-Name "Example User" `
-SamAccountName "example.user" `
-UserPrincipalName "[email protected]" `
-Path "OU=Users,DC=example,DC=com" `
-Enabled $false
-Name supplies the object’s common name, -SamAccountName supplies the required legacy logon name for the user class, and -Path determines where the object is created. The path must identify an existing OU or container in the domain where the command is being run.
Add schema-specific attributes deliberately
If your domain or application requires another attribute, add it with a supported parameter or through -OtherAttributes. Do not add arbitrary properties simply because they exist on another object type. First verify that the property belongs to the selected class and that its syntax matches the schema.
Handle an enabled account separately when necessary
An enabled user may require unicodePwd and other account-control conditions. If the initial request fails with 0x0000207C while enabling the account, create the object in a state permitted by your policy, supply the required password-related data through the supported account-management operation, and then enable it. The exact sequence is domain-policy dependent; follow the diagnostics returned by your controller rather than repeatedly resubmitting an incomplete add request.

Verify the module and target domain
Run the command in a session with the Active Directory module available and credentials that can create objects in the target path. If the command succeeds against one domain but fails against another, compare the target schema, required attributes, and OU permissions instead of assuming that Windows 10 or Windows 11 is inconsistent.
What if a provisioning tool or application creates the object?
When the failing call is hidden behind an identity platform or line-of-business application, the fix is still in the generated LDAP request. Enable the product’s directory or protocol logging, reproduce the failure once, and capture the requested class, distinguished name, attributes, and server diagnostic.
Map the application’s fields to LDAP attributes
Provisioning forms often use friendly labels while the directory requires LDAP names. Check that the field mapped to the user’s account name actually produces sAMAccountName, that the object class is correct, and that the destination container is not silently changing the class or template.
Check create and modify phases
Some applications create a bare object and then issue a second modify request. A required attribute may be missing from either phase. If the add succeeds but the follow-up modify fails, inspect the second request rather than the initial object template.
Check custom schema extensions
A custom mandatory attribute can be required only in a particular environment. Compare the application’s template with the schema used by the affected domain controller, and have a directory administrator confirm the attribute’s syntax and allowed values before changing the template.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I tell which attribute is missing?
The most reliable clue is the server’s extended diagnostic text, not the hexadecimal code alone. Keep the entire LDAP or application error, because clients sometimes display only the generic status while logging the attribute name separately.
Best Value
- Inspect the application’s directory-operation log for the raw add or modify request.
- Review the PowerShell error record, including its inner exception and server message.
- For ADSI, log the property assignments made before
SetInfoand the complete exception returned by the commit. - Compare the request with the required attributes for the exact object class in the domain schema.
- Repeat the operation with one controlled change so you can identify which correction removed the missing-attribute response.
If no diagnostic names the field, ask a directory administrator to inspect the schema and the controller-side diagnostic information. Avoid guessing from a generic list of “usual” attributes: required fields vary by class and operation.
What are the most common wrong fixes?
Several popular Windows troubleshooting steps do not address this status because they do not alter the LDAP request.
- Reinstalling Windows: the error is generated by Active Directory validation, so reinstalling a client does not add a schema attribute.
- Updating drivers or hardware: the code is not a device-driver or component failure.
- Deleting random registry values: registry cleanup cannot satisfy a required directory property and can create unrelated problems.
- Retrying unchanged: the domain controller will validate the same incomplete request in the same way.
- Copying a user template to every class: groups, computers, and custom classes have different required sets.
- Assuming every “required” field is universal: a field required for an enabled user may not be required for a disabled user or another object class.
Which remediation path should I choose?
Choose the path that exposes the request and gives you control over the commit step.
| Interface | Best first check | Correction point | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| LDAP or ADSI | Object class, DN, and properties set before commit | Add all mandatory values before SetInfo or the LDAP add |
Server diagnostic and logged property assignments |
| PowerShell | New-ADUser parameters and destination Path |
Supply SamAccountName and class-specific values; use OtherAttributes where appropriate |
PowerShell error record and target domain |
| GUI administration tool | Selected object type and fields marked or enforced by the tool | Complete the required fields for that class before saving | Tool log plus the controller diagnostic |
| Provisioning application | Generated add and follow-up modify requests | Correct the field-to-LDAP mapping or template | Application directory log and server response |
| Custom class | Schema-required and auxiliary attributes | Populate the custom mandatory properties with valid syntax | Schema administrator’s confirmation and raw request |
What should I do if the error remains after adding the obvious fields?
- Confirm that the corrected request is actually the one being sent; cached templates and old application workers can continue submitting the previous version.
- Check whether the operation changed from add to modify, or from disabled to enabled. The required set can change with the operation.
- Verify the object class on the domain controller, especially if custom schema extensions or auxiliary classes are involved.
- Check the enabled-account and password requirements if the failure occurs during activation rather than creation.
- Compare the request against the controller’s diagnostic message and test with a minimal object in a controlled OU.
- Escalate to the directory administrator with the distinguished name, object classes, raw attributes, controller name, timestamp, and complete error text. That information lets the administrator distinguish a missing field from a schema replication or policy issue.
Once the request contains every attribute required for that exact class and operation, the 0x0000207C response should stop. If a new status appears, treat it as a separate validation, permissions, naming, or syntax problem and work from its own diagnostic.
Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for checking and repairing some common Windows issues, but it does not replace the manual Active Directory schema checks above or an antivirus. Frequently Asked Questions
Can this error occur when modifying an existing Active Directory object?
Yes. The status is not limited to object creation. A modify or enable operation can also require an attribute that the submitted change does not include or that the object lacks under the current class and policy.
Will changing the computer from Windows 10 to Windows 11 remove 0x0000207C?
No. The code comes from the Active Directory request handled by a domain controller, so changing the client operating system does not supply the missing attribute. Correct the request or its provisioning template instead.
Is 0x0000207C the same as an access-denied error?
No. Access denied means the caller lacks permission for the operation. 0x0000207C means the server rejected the request’s attribute set; capture the full diagnostic before changing permissions.
What should I give my directory administrator when I need help?
Provide the exact operation, distinguished name, objectClass values, destination container, complete attribute list, domain controller, timestamp, and unabridged server error. Those details allow the administrator to check the correct schema and operation-specific requirements.
