Error 0x00002025 maps to the Win32 code ERROR_DS_COMPARE_FALSE, whose message is “The compare response was false.” That identifies a directory-service comparison result, not a specific Windows component or a universal repair. The number alone does not reveal which application performed the comparison, what values it checked, or why the comparison returned false. The reliable way to fix it is therefore to identify the program and operation that produced the code, correlate the failure with its logs, and then correct that application or directory configuration. If the message appeared during Windows Update or setup, use Microsoft’s general troubleshooting only after confirming that context; Microsoft does not publish a remedy specific to this code.
What does error 0x00002025 mean?
Microsoft’s [MS-ERREF]: Win32 Error Codes specification maps hexadecimal 0x00002025 to ERROR_DS_COMPARE_FALSE and gives the default text “The compare response was false.” In practical terms, a directory-service comparison returned a negative result. A program may have compared an identity, account property, directory value, or other record and received “false” rather than the result it expected.

That symbolic name is a clue, not a complete diagnosis. Microsoft cautions that the table describes common usage and that an individual protocol specification can expand or modify a definition. Consequently, two programs can display the same number in different workflows, and the code does not prove that Windows itself is damaged.
- It does not identify the application that emitted the message.
- It does not identify the two values or records that were compared.
- It does not establish whether the cause is a wrong account value, a permissions issue, a synchronization problem, an application defect, or an unrelated failure that was translated to this Win32 code.
- It is not, by itself, evidence of malware or a failing hardware component.
Why is there no universal Windows 10 or 11 fix?
A repair can be selected only after the generating operation is known. The same code shown by a sign-in connector, a directory-management utility, and an installer could require entirely different action. Microsoft’s general Windows Update and Windows upgrade pages contain broad troubleshooting advice, but they do not list 0x00002025 as a specific update or installation error and do not publish a code-specific correction.

How do I find the application and operation that returned the code?
Do this evidence-gathering sequence before deleting accounts, editing the registry, or running a broad “repair” utility. The goal is to associate the number with one process, one action, and one timestamp.
- Record the complete dialog. Write down the application title, the exact action immediately before the failure, the full message around
0x00002025, and whether the number includes leading zeroes. A screenshot is useful, but transcribe the text as well. - Note the account and device state. Record whether you were signed in with a local account, a personal Microsoft account, or a work or school account. Note whether the PC is joined to an organization, connected through a company VPN, or using a sign-in or synchronization agent.
- Check Windows Event Viewer at the same time. Press
Win, type Event Viewer, and open it. Review Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the failure time. Also expand Applications and Services Logs and inspect entries belonging to the program, identity component, or installer that was active. Capture the event source, event ID, timestamp, level, and complete message. - Open the application’s own log folder or console. Many identity, backup, synchronization, and setup programs record a more descriptive error than the dialog. Use the program’s Help, Diagnostics, or View log command where available. Do not upload logs publicly until you have removed usernames, email addresses, domain names, device names, and tokens.
- Reproduce once, if safe. Close unrelated programs, repeat the same action, and record whether the code appears consistently. Do not repeatedly trigger a sign-in, account-provisioning, or directory-write operation if it could create duplicate accounts or change organizational data.
- Correlate the evidence. Match the dialog time with the nearest event and application-log entries. A useful record contains the program name and version, the operation, the account or object involved (redacted when shared), the exact code, and the surrounding error text.
If no program name is visible, open Task Manager while reproducing the issue and note which application becomes active immediately before the dialog. This is only a way to identify the likely owner; it does not prove that the foreground process generated the code.
What should I do if the error involves a work or school directory?
On a managed PC, treat ERROR_DS_COMPARE_FALSE as an application or directory-workflow diagnostic rather than a cue to modify Windows globally. The comparison may involve an account attribute, group membership, device record, certificate, or synchronization state, but the code does not tell you which one.

Give the administrator useful evidence
- Send the complete dialog text and the local timestamp, including your time zone.
- Identify the exact action: signing in, enrolling the device, changing a password, opening a shared resource, synchronizing, or provisioning an account.
- Include the event source, event ID, and related messages from Event Viewer, plus the application name and version.
- State whether the failure occurs on one account, one computer, or multiple devices. That distinction helps separate a local cache problem from a directory-side condition.
What the administrator or vendor may check
The responsible administrator can compare the directory values involved in the failed operation, review permissions and synchronization status, and inspect server-side logs that are unavailable to a standard user. The application vendor can determine how its code maps a false comparison and whether a particular release contains a defect. Ask them for the precise object and attribute involved before changing anything.
Changes to avoid without authorization
Do not delete a user or computer account, alter directory attributes, remove certificates, disable identity services, or edit the registry simply because this number appeared. Such changes can create a second problem and may destroy the evidence needed to diagnose the original comparison.
How do I handle 0x00002025 when it appeared during Windows Update?
First verify the context in Settings > Windows Update > Update history and in the complete update message. If the code came from a separate updater, driver installer, or security product launched during an update, that program—not Windows Update—may be the source.

Use Microsoft’s general update checks only after confirming the context
- On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and run the Windows Update troubleshooter when it is offered. Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter guidance also describes the built-in Settings route and restarting the PC before checking for updates again.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update, then follow the prompts if the troubleshooter is available on that edition.
- Restart the computer, return to the Windows Update page, and check for updates again. Record the resulting code and timestamp rather than assuming the first message was the final cause.
- If the failure repeats, preserve the update history entry and any event-log details and use Microsoft’s support workflow for the specific update failure.
These steps are general update troubleshooting, not a remedy established for 0x00002025. If the same number appears in an application dialog outside the update page, return to the application-identification procedure instead of repeating update resets.
What Windows 10 support status changes
Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A Windows 10 PC continues to operate, but an end-of-support status is not a code-specific explanation or proof that upgrading to Windows 11 will correct this comparison result.
What if the code appeared during Windows setup or an upgrade?
Confirm the exact code in the setup screen, rollback message, or setup output before applying any change. Microsoft’s upgrade and installation guidance recommends broad preparation steps, but its published examples do not include 0x00002025.

- Install important updates that are offered for the current installation, then restart and retry only if the setup program still identifies the same operation.
- Open Device Manager and look for devices marked with a warning icon. Record the device name and driver status rather than uninstalling hardware at random.
- Copy the complete setup error and its timestamp. If setup created a log or rollback report, preserve it for the software vendor or Microsoft support.
- If setup fails again with a different code, treat that new code as a separate event; do not combine several numbers into one diagnosis.
General setup advice can remove unrelated installation obstacles, but it does not establish that a peripheral, driver, or pending update caused this directory comparison result.

Which “fixes” should I avoid?
- Registry cleaners and scripted repair bundles: They cannot identify the compared directory values from this code and can make an otherwise recoverable system harder to troubleshoot.
- Deleting accounts or resetting directory objects: A false comparison is not proof that the account or device record should be removed.
- Blind service and security changes: Disabling identity, update, firewall, or authentication services may hide the symptom while weakening the system.
- Repeated cache deletion: Clearing an application cache is appropriate only when the application’s documented support procedure calls for it and you have preserved logs first.
- Assuming malware: The symbolic name describes a comparison result. Run your normal security controls if you have an independent reason, but do not treat this number as a malware verdict.
How do I choose the next diagnostic path?
Use the evidence you collected to select one owner and one controlled next action. This avoids applying update procedures to an identity application or changing directory data on a personal PC.

When should I escalate instead of trying another local fix?
Escalate immediately when the operation changes organizational accounts, device enrollment, certificates, permissions, or directory data; when several users or computers are affected; or when the event log points to a server or synchronization component. A personal-PC user should contact the application vendor when the program name and version are known but its logs do not explain the comparison. Include the exact code, full message, timestamp, steps to reproduce, and redacted logs. That information is more actionable than a request to “fix 0x00002025” without context.

Not necessarily. A password or identity check might be one kind of comparison, but the mapping does not specify which account value was tested, and the emitting application could be using the code for another directory-related condition.
Where can I find more detail than the pop-up message?
Look at Event Viewer entries sharing the failure timestamp, the application’s diagnostic logs, and any setup or synchronization reports. Record the event source and ID along with the full text; those fields let an administrator or vendor match the result to a specific operation.
Should I upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11 to clear this code?
Not as a code-specific remedy. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but the support change does not explain a directory comparison returning false; identify the generating application first and evaluate an upgrade separately.
Why did the same code disappear after restarting?
