Error 0x000013AF means Windows has rejected a failover-cluster node as invalid. Microsoft maps the code to ERROR_CLUSTER_INVALID_NODE and describes it as “The cluster node is not valid.” It is primarily a Windows Server failover-clustering condition, even when the message appears in a Windows 10 or Windows 11 management session. A normal, standalone PC does not have a cluster node to validate. Start by identifying the cluster operation that produced the code, then verify the node name, membership record, DNS, network reachability and cluster validation results. Only after those checks should you evict or re-add a node, and such changes belong in an approved maintenance window because they can affect quorum and service availability.

What does error 0x000013AF mean?

It is the Win32 error ERROR_CLUSTER_INVALID_NODE. The cluster service considers the computer named in the operation to be an invalid node for that cluster. The message is not a diagnosis of a failing hard drive, a missing desktop DLL or a generic application-launch problem.

The code can be returned while an administrator creates a cluster, adds a server, checks membership, reconnects a server after an outage, or uses a management tool against an existing cluster. A remote Windows 10 or 11 computer can display the message while administering Windows Server, so the client edition shown on screen does not identify the failing component.

Microsoft’s exact description is: “The cluster node is not valid.” That wording identifies the status, not the reason. The underlying cause may be a wrong or stale name, an incorrect membership record, DNS or network failure, a domain or computer-identity problem, or a node that was removed and later returned without being correctly reintroduced.

Is 0x000013AF a Windows 10 or Windows 11 update error?

Not by definition. The code belongs to the Windows clustering error family, not the ordinary Windows Update error list. If it appears in Failover Cluster Manager, a cluster PowerShell command, Event Viewer or a third-party cluster console, investigate the cluster operation first.

If the message appeared during an unrelated feature upgrade, setup failure or stop-error investigation, treat that as a separate client-side problem until evidence connects it to a cluster. Windows 10 and Windows 11 may be the administrative workstation; the cluster itself normally runs on Windows Server. Do not delete cluster objects or force a node join merely because an upgrade screen displayed this hexadecimal value.

What should I record before changing anything?

Capture enough context to reproduce the failure and correlate it with cluster logs. Make these notes before restarting services or changing membership:

  • The exact application, command or GUI action that produced the code.
  • The cluster name, intended node name and the computer from which the action was launched.
  • The Windows Server edition and build on each relevant node, plus the Windows 10 or 11 version if a client is involved.
  • The precise date and time, including time zone, and whether the attempt was a create, add, join, recover, move or status operation.
  • Any accompanying message, event ID, node state, network warning or authentication error.

Save screenshots and command output in the change record. This prevents a stale name in a ticket from being mistaken for the current node and gives an administrator a timeline for DNS, domain and cluster events.

How do I check that the node identity and membership are correct?

First determine whether the named computer is the server you intend to manage and whether that server is a member of the intended cluster. A node can be physically healthy yet invalid because the request refers to a renamed computer, a duplicate computer object, a different cluster or a node that was previously evicted.

Check the node in Failover Cluster Manager

  1. On an account with the required cluster-management rights, open Failover Cluster Manager.
  2. Select Nodes under the cluster and compare the displayed names with the server name in the error and your change record.
  3. Check each node’s state and the time of the last state change. A node shown as missing, down, paused or not present needs a connectivity and membership investigation rather than an immediate forced join.
  4. Open the cluster’s roles and networks views to see whether workloads and cluster networks are online before making a membership change.

Check membership from PowerShell

From a management session on a system with the Failover Clustering tools installed, the cluster cmdlet Get-ClusterNode can display the membership known to the cluster. Use the cluster name explicitly when more than one cluster is visible. Cmdlet parameters and remoting requirements vary by Windows Server release, so confirm the syntax in the help installed on that system before running it in production.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the returned node name with the computer’s actual system name and with the name resolved by your management workstation. Look for a server that was renamed, rebuilt, restored from an old image or reintroduced with a different computer account. A record that looks similar but differs by a character, suffix or domain is not the same node.

How do I test DNS, domain identity and cluster connectivity?

A valid membership record is not enough if the node cannot resolve or reach the cluster. Check name resolution in both directions and test the paths used by cluster and management traffic.

  1. On the management computer and affected node, resolve the cluster name and each node’s fully qualified name with the DNS tools available in your environment, such as nslookup or Resolve-DnsName. Confirm that the answers are the expected addresses, not an old record.
  2. Resolve the node name from the other nodes and resolve the other nodes from the affected server. Reverse lookups should not unexpectedly return a former host or an unrelated address.
  3. Verify that the server can reach the cluster networks and the required management endpoints. A simple ping result is not a complete cluster test, but a failure can reveal routing, firewall or interface problems that must be investigated.
  4. Check that the computer is still in the intended Active Directory domain, that its secure relationship is healthy and that its clock is synchronized. A broken domain relationship or substantial time drift can prevent authentication even when the server is powered on.
  5. Confirm that firewalls, network segmentation and security controls allow the cluster and remote-management traffic required by your installed Windows Server version. Do not disable protection broadly; use your organization’s approved rules and change process.

These checks distinguish an unreachable node from a node that the cluster genuinely no longer recognizes. Record the address and name results rather than relying on a single workstation’s cache.

How do I validate the cluster before repairing membership?

Run the supported validation workflow before evicting, forcing or re-adding a server. Validation can identify a failed network, storage path, system configuration or name problem and provides a report that is safer to review than trial-and-error membership changes.

Using the graphical workflow

  1. In Failover Cluster Manager, select the cluster or the validation option under the management actions.
  2. Choose the nodes involved in the operation, or the proposed node if you are preparing an addition.
  3. Run the tests appropriate to your topology and wait for the report to finish. Do not treat a warning as proof that the node is invalid; read which test failed, on which server and under what conditions.
  4. Save the report and compare its timestamps with the 0x000013AF event. Correct name, domain, network or system issues and run validation again.

Using PowerShell

Windows Server installations with the Failover Clustering module provide the Test-Cluster validation command. The node list, tests and remoting behavior must match your Server release and design; use Get-Help Test-Cluster on that installation and follow your organization’s runbook. A validation report is evidence for the next decision, not permission to remove a node automatically.

Read the cluster logs

Review Event Viewer under Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > FailoverClustering on the affected servers. Correlate node, network and membership events around the recorded time. The cluster log can be generated with the Failover Clustering tools (for example, the Get-ClusterLog cmdlet); use the parameters documented for your installed Server version and preserve the resulting files before rotating or clearing logs.

How do I repair a stale or invalid node record?

Repair depends on what validation proves. If the node is merely unreachable, restore connectivity and identity first. If the cluster record confirms that the server is no longer a valid member, an administrator may need to evict the stale record and add the prepared server again. Both operations can change quorum and workload placement.

When the node is still a valid member

  • Correct DNS, routing, firewall, domain or time problems without changing membership.
  • Bring the node online through the supported cluster workflow and confirm that its state changes normally.
  • Re-run validation and review the cluster log for new membership or network events.

When the node was removed, renamed or rebuilt

  1. Schedule an approved maintenance window and identify the quorum model, current owners and failover capacity.
  2. Move or drain clustered roles according to your availability plan. Verify that the cluster remains healthy before touching membership.
  3. Use the supported Evict or Remove Node action in Failover Cluster Manager, or the corresponding cluster cmdlet for your Server version, to remove only the confirmed stale record. Never guess at a node name.
  4. Prepare the server: install the required Windows Server role and features, apply the organization’s patch level, confirm the domain relationship, correct names and addresses, and verify access to every required cluster network and storage path.
  5. Run the supported validation tests for the prepared node and existing cluster.
  6. Use Add Node in Failover Cluster Manager or the version-appropriate cluster cmdlet to add the server. Follow the prompts for the intended cluster and confirm that the computer account and permissions are correct.
  7. Verify node state, networks, roles, storage and quorum. Test a controlled role move only when the change plan allows it.

Do not use a forced join, delete directory objects or remove multiple nodes to make the message disappear. Destructive membership changes can reduce votes, interrupt services or leave the cluster unable to achieve quorum. If the cluster hosts critical workloads, involve the team that owns its availability design before proceeding.

What if the message appeared during a general Windows 10 or 11 failure?

Apply Microsoft’s general client troubleshooting guidance only when the evidence points to an upgrade, driver or stop-error problem outside the cluster. These steps may make the management PC stable, but they do not establish that a cluster node is valid.

  1. Disconnect nonessential external hardware and retry the operation if the failure is part of an upgrade.
  2. Install available Windows updates and check third-party drivers, especially after a hardware or network change.
  3. Temporarily remove non-Microsoft security software only under your organization’s policy and reinstall or re-enable protection after testing.
  4. For recurring stop errors, start Windows in Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager for warning icons, ensure adequate free disk space, install current updates and use Windows recovery options when needed.
  5. Return to the cluster investigation if the same code appears again in a cluster tool. A successful desktop repair does not repair cluster membership metadata.

If the code appears only in an installer log and nowhere in Failover Cluster Manager, Event Viewer’s FailoverClustering channel or a cluster command, preserve the installer log and investigate that product’s documented error path instead of assuming a cluster fault.

Which remediation path is safest?

Use the evidence to select the least disruptive option. The following comparison keeps a connectivity problem from being treated like stale metadata.

Finding Likely focus Preferred next action Availability risk
Node is listed and identity matches, but cannot be reached DNS, routing, firewall, interface, domain or time synchronization Restore reachability and authentication; validate again Usually lower than a membership change, but workloads may already be degraded
Name resolves to the wrong or old address Stale DNS, duplicate record or renamed server Correct authoritative name records and confirm both-direction resolution Incorrect DNS edits can affect other services
Server is absent from the intended cluster after rebuild or eviction Membership and node preparation Follow change control to validate, evict any stale record and re-add the prepared node Quorum and role ownership must be planned
Validation identifies a network, storage or system failure Underlying infrastructure or configuration Fix the reported condition, then rerun validation Depends on the failed component and workload design
Code appears only in an unrelated client upgrade Windows setup, driver, security software or recovery issue Use general client troubleshooting and preserve setup logs Do not alter cluster membership without cluster evidence

Compare each option by four questions: Is the node unreachable or absent from membership? Is the evidence pointing to DNS and network, identity and domain, or stale cluster metadata? Can the cluster stay online during repair? How reversible is the proposed change, and what does it do to quorum?

Does 0x000013AF require new hardware?

No specific physical accessory, replacement part or consumable is established as a fix for this status code. A cable, disk, memory module or generic “cleaner” would assume a hardware cause that the error itself does not prove. Replace or repair hardware only when separate diagnostics identify a failed component or the cluster design requires it.

When should I escalate the incident?

Escalate before changing membership when the cluster hosts production workloads, when more than one node is affected, when quorum is at risk, or when validation reports storage or network failures you cannot safely isolate. Provide the cluster and node names, exact operation, timestamps, validation report, relevant Event Viewer entries, cluster logs, DNS results and the changes already attempted. Keep the original logs untouched and work from copies so later analysis can reconstruct the sequence.

The practical order is therefore: identify the source of the code, verify node identity and membership, test name resolution and reachability, validate the cluster, inspect logs, and only then perform a controlled eviction and re-add if the evidence requires it.

As an optional shortcut for general Windows-side issues on the management PC, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows problems, tune settings, clear temporary and cache files, check selected vulnerabilities and record app crashes. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ignore 0x000013AF if all cluster roles are still online?

Do not dismiss it without identifying the failed operation. The cluster may remain online while a management, recovery or future failover action targets a node whose identity or membership is wrong; save the event and run validation during a controlled period.

Will restarting the affected server clear ERROR_CLUSTER_INVALID_NODE?

A restart can restore a transient service or network condition, but it cannot correct a stale cluster membership record, duplicate name or wrong DNS entry. Recheck identity, reachability and validation results after the restart instead of repeating restarts as the repair.

Can a renamed Windows Server keep its old cluster identity?

Renaming or rebuilding a server can leave the cluster referring to the previous computer identity. Treat the old and new names as different nodes, verify directory and DNS records, and use the supported eviction and re-add procedure rather than editing cluster data manually.

What information will a cluster support engineer need first?

Provide the exact hexadecimal code, operation, cluster and node names, server versions, timestamp with time zone, validation report, FailoverClustering events, cluster logs and DNS or reachability results. Include whether any node was recently renamed, rebuilt, evicted or restored from an image.
