What should I record before trying a fix?
Capture the incident before closing the dialog or changing Windows. These details are often more useful than the number itself when a vendor or Microsoft Support investigates it.
- Copy the complete message, including punctuation, capitalization, and any text before or after
0x00000A9A. - Record the application, service, device, or Windows screen that displayed it. A window title, process name, publisher, or component name can identify the source.

How do I look up 0x00000A9A with Microsoft tools?
Microsoft recommends the Error Lookup Tool and Windows debugging tools for investigating a specific system error. These tools can tell you whether the value corresponds to a defined Windows error, but the result still has to be matched to the program and operation that produced it.
Use the Microsoft Error Lookup Tool
- Obtain the Microsoft Error Lookup Tool from Microsoft’s documentation or support resources.
- Enter the hexadecimal value exactly as displayed:
0x00000A9A. If the dialog omits leading zeroes, record both the displayed form and the full value you entered. - Compare the returned description with the complete dialog and the application or component name. A matching description does not prove that the tool’s text explains the entire failure.
- Save the lookup result with your screenshot and timestamp so a support technician can reproduce your reasoning.
Use Windows debugging tools when a dump is available
A debugger is appropriate when the error accompanies a crash dump or another diagnostic package. In the debugger’s command window, Microsoft’s guidance uses the !err extension to decode an error value:

Use that command only in a debugger session with the relevant dump or live debugging context. A decoded string without the correct dump, call stack, or failing module is not a complete diagnosis. If you do not already have a dump and debugging workflow, send the dump and the original message to the responsible vendor or Microsoft Support instead of experimenting with debugger settings.
What should I do if the error appears during Windows Update?
Handle it as an update failure, not as a generic 0x00000A9A repair. The update number and the Windows version determine which Microsoft procedure applies.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and inspect Update history. Record the failed update’s KB number, date, and accompanying text.
- Check whether another update attempt produces the same code or a different one. A changing code can indicate that the original message was only a symptom.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter supplied for your edition of Windows, following its instructions and noting each reported result.
- Use Microsoft’s support instructions for the specific KB and Windows build. Do not download replacement system files from an unrelated site.
- If the failure persists, provide Microsoft Support with the update history entry, the complete message, the build number, and any logs the troubleshooter requests.
Do not delete update databases, rename system folders, or apply a registry script solely because a web page associates those actions with a similar-looking code. Those changes can create a second problem and are not established remedies for this value.

Activation errors need licensing context: the Windows edition, whether the license is digital or product-key based, and whether the device or major hardware recently changed.

- Copy the exact activation status and any accompanying text. Note whether the error appears during first setup, after a hardware change, or when reactivating an existing installation.
- Use the activation troubleshooter offered on that page when it is available, and follow Microsoft’s licensing guidance for your edition.
- If the device belongs to an organization, contact the administrator responsible for its activation method rather than changing product-key or licensing files.
The hexadecimal value by itself does not establish that the license is invalid, that Windows is counterfeit, or that reinstalling the operating system is necessary.
How should I investigate a blue screen or restart?
A stop screen changes the investigation because the important evidence may be in a dump file and in the stop message shown with the restart. Do not assume that a code seen after reboot is the same as an ordinary application error.

- Photograph or transcribe the entire stop screen, including the named module and any percentage or dump-creation status.
- After Windows starts, check whether a dump was created and preserve it before using cleanup software. A typical small-dump location is
%SystemRoot%Minidump, but the configured dump path can differ. - Record recent hardware, driver, firmware, or security-software changes and whether the crash occurs during a repeatable operation.
- Use Windows debugging guidance with the dump, or provide the dump and stop-screen details to Microsoft Support or the hardware or driver vendor.
A driver reinstall, BIOS change, or system reset can be appropriate for a confirmed failing module, but none is justified by 0x00000A9A alone.
What if an app or device produced the message?
For an application or vendor utility, the publisher’s logs and version-specific instructions have priority over generic Windows repairs.
Application-generated errors
Check the app’s own help, diagnostic, or log location and reproduce the failure only if doing so is safe. Note the file, account action, plug-in, or network operation that triggers it. Install an update or reinstall the app only when the publisher documents that step for your version, and back up app data first.
Device and peripheral errors
Identify the exact model, connection type, firmware version, and Windows build. When the vendor says Windows is at fault

Select the event that matches the recorded time and save its details. - Compare the event’s source, event ID, faulting application, and module with the original dialog. If they do not match, keep both records and do not assume they describe one incident.
- When support requests logs, send only the requested files and redact personal information. Keep an untouched copy in case another technician needs the original.
Do not clear logs before exporting them. Cleaning the evidence can make a later diagnosis impossible.

Because no code-specific remedy is established, broad repair recipes carry more risk than benefit.
- Registry scripts: A script aimed at a different error or Windows build can disable services, break file associations, or prevent startup.
- Unverified DLL downloads: Replacing a system DLL with a file from an unknown site can introduce malware or a version mismatch.
- Random driver packages: Installing a driver unrelated to the named device can create new crashes and obscure the original evidence.
- System resets and reinstalls: These erase applications, settings, or data without proving that the code originates in Windows.
- Repeated automatic “repair” scans: A scan may change files or settings before you have captured the logs needed by support.
If a documented procedure requires one of these actions for your confirmed component, create a backup, read the rollback instructions, and follow the publisher’s version-specific guidance exactly.
When should I contact Microsoft or the software vendor?
Escalate when the source remains unclear, the error blocks work, or the problem continues after the component’s documented procedure.
