Error 0x00000A89 is the Windows/Win32 code NERR_ComputerAccountNotFound. It means “The specified computer account could not be found,” normally because a domain controller cannot locate the computer’s Active Directory account. It is therefore an identity and domain-membership problem, not a general hardware failure.
Start by recording the complete message and confirming the PC’s name, domain, network or VPN connection, and clock. Have a domain administrator check the computer object and repair the secure channel before anyone removes the PC from the domain. A full workgroup-and-domain re-join is a fallback, not the first move, because it can affect profiles, certificates, policies, VPN settings, and cached credentials.

What does error 0x00000A89 mean?
Microsoft defines 0x00000A89 as NERR_ComputerAccountNotFound: “The specified computer account could not be found.” The condition is associated with a Windows computer account in Active Directory, the directory service used by many business and school networks to identify domain-joined PCs.
A computer account is a directory object representing the machine. Windows uses that identity when the computer authenticates to a domain controller, refreshes Group Policy, accesses domain file shares, and performs other managed operations. If the object is missing, disabled, duplicated, restored from an old backup, in the wrong organizational unit, or no longer matches the local PC, an application or Windows component can report this code.

The hexadecimal value alone does not identify which directory change occurred. The complete dialog, the computer name, the domain, and the application or command that emitted the error provide better evidence.
What should I check before changing domain membership?
Collect evidence and protect your ability to sign in before attempting a repair. Do not remove a production computer from its domain merely because the message appeared once.
Record the complete context
- Copy the entire error text, including any computer or domain name shown.
- Note when it appeared and what you were doing: signing in, opening a share, running a script, installing an update, or using a business application.
- Identify the local computer name. You can view it in Settings > System > About on Windows 11, or in Settings > System > About on Windows 10.
- Check whether the PC is domain-joined. The
sysdm.cplcommand opens System Properties; the Computer Name tab shows the computer name, workgroup, or domain. - Write down the domain name and the name of the domain controller or VPN profile involved, if your organization provides that information.
Verify the network and VPN
Connect the PC to the corporate LAN or the organization’s approved VPN before testing domain operations. A computer that is offline, connected to an isolated guest network, or using a VPN that does not carry domain traffic may be unable to locate a domain controller even when its directory account still exists.
Check the clock
Domain authentication depends on synchronized time. In Windows 11, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable automatic time, and select Sync now when available. Windows 10 uses the same Settings > Time & Language > Date & time area. If your organization manages time through policy, follow its procedure rather than forcing a different time source.
Confirm recovery access
Before a membership change, a domain administrator should confirm that a working local administrator account is available and that its recovery credentials are known. Also make sure the person performing directory work has the domain or Active Directory permissions required by your organization. A standard user generally cannot repair a computer object or secure channel.
How can an administrator check the computer account in Active Directory?
The directory state determines the correct repair. An Active Directory administrator should search for the exact computer name and verify that the object belongs to the expected domain and organizational unit.
Search for the exact object
- Open the organization’s approved Active Directory administration console on an authorized management computer.
- Search for the PC’s computer name exactly as recorded from Windows. Check spelling, punctuation, and any naming suffix used by your organization.
- Verify that the object is in the expected organizational unit and that it is enabled.
- Look for duplicate computer objects with similar names. A duplicate or stale object can cause an administrator to reset the wrong account.
- Ask whether the object was recently deleted, recreated, moved, or restored from an old directory backup. Those events change which object represents the current PC.
The Microsoft definition establishes the missing-account condition; it does not say whether deletion, disabling, duplication, restoration, or a name mismatch caused your incident. Your organization’s directory history and logs are authoritative for that decision.

Use Event Viewer and the emitting application as evidence
Open Event Viewer and inspect entries created at the time of the failure, together with the log named by your organization’s troubleshooting procedure. Also check the application, scheduled task, or script that displayed the code. A command that queries a retired computer name can produce the same hexadecimal value as a damaged secure channel, so the source matters.
How do I repair the secure channel without leaving the domain?
A secure-channel repair or computer-account password reset is normally the least disruptive path when the PC is still intended to remain in the domain. A domain administrator should run the approved operation with the credentials and domain parameters required in that environment.
Test and repair the secure channel

If the repair reports failure, record the message before trying a different path. Do not repeatedly reset accounts without confirming which directory object is the correct one.

Reset-ComputerMachinePassword -Credential (Get-Credential)Parameter names and permissions can vary with the organization’s tooling. Use the domain, server, and credential values your administrator specifies; do not copy a production value from an example.
Restart and test the operations that failed
- Restart the PC after the approved repair or password reset.
- Sign in with a domain account while connected to the corporate network or VPN.
- Run a policy refresh using the organization’s normal process and confirm that policies apply.
- Test the file share, application, scheduled task, or script that originally produced
0x00000A89. - Check that subsequent sign-ins and access to required domain resources work without the error.
If the account was missing or the wrong object was reset, a secure-channel command cannot recreate the intended directory history. Return to the Active Directory check rather than escalating blindly.
When should I reset the computer object in Active Directory?
Resetting the correct computer object is appropriate when the object exists but its relationship with the local PC is invalid, and the organization’s administrator has confirmed the object and naming. It should be coordinated with the person responsible for domain administration because the reset changes the machine’s directory authentication state.
Confirm the target first
- Match the local computer name to the directory object character for character.
- Confirm the object is in the intended organizational unit and is not disabled.
- Check whether another object with the same or a nearly identical name exists.
- Record any certificate, policy, VPN, or application dependencies that refer to the computer object.
Reset, then repair from the PC
After the administrator resets the verified object using the organization’s approved Active Directory tools, perform the secure-channel repair or machine-password reset from the PC, restart, and test domain operations. If the reset was performed on the wrong object, stop and have the administrator correct the directory state; creating additional objects can make the problem harder to diagnose.
How do I re-join a Windows 11 or 10 PC to the domain?
A full re-join is a fallback when the computer object and secure channel cannot be repaired. Treat it as a managed change, especially on a production laptop or a PC that stores certificates, VPN profiles, policy settings, or cached domain credentials.
Plan the impact
Before starting, back up user files according to your organization’s policy and document the current computer name, domain, VPN configuration, certificates, mapped resources, and local administrator access. Ask the domain administrator whether the existing computer object should be reset, deleted, or reused. Re-joining can affect user profiles, certificates, policies, VPN configuration, and stored or cached credentials.
Move the PC temporarily to a workgroup
- Sign in with a local administrator account.
- Open
sysdm.cpland select the Computer Name tab. - Select Change, choose a temporary workgroup as directed by your administrator, and provide authorized credentials if prompted.
- Accept the restart request and restart the PC.
The exact labels can differ slightly between Windows 11 and Windows 10 builds. If the controls are unavailable, the device may be managed by policy; contact the administrator instead of forcing a change.

Join the domain again
- Sign in with the local administrator account after the restart.
- Open
sysdm.cpl, select Computer Name, then Change. - Choose Domain, enter the organization’s domain name exactly, and submit the authorized domain credentials.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Reconnect to the corporate LAN or approved VPN, sign in with a domain account, and test policy, shares, certificates, applications, and the operation that raised the error.
If the new sign-in creates a different Windows profile, do not delete the old profile until the administrator confirms that files, certificates, and application data have been migrated or are no longer needed.

An update or setup event can expose a coincident domain problem, but update troubleshooting does not recreate a missing Active Directory computer account. Run the update checks in addition to the directory investigation when the timing points to Windows Update.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and run the troubleshooter.
Complete Microsoft’s basic update checks
- Restart the PC and check for updates again.
- Disconnect nonessential external hardware during setup or update.
- Inspect Device Manager for devices with warning icons and follow your organization’s approved driver process.
- Review whether third-party security software is interfering with the update; coordinate any temporary change with your security administrator.
- Use the organization’s approved method to check and repair disk errors where applicable.
These actions can resolve a separate update, driver, or disk issue. They do not substitute for finding, enabling, resetting, or recreating the correct domain computer object.

When in doubt, stop after collecting the message, object name, network state, clock status, and relevant events. Give those details to the domain or managed-IT administrator rather than experimenting with membership changes.
What should I do if the PC is not domain-joined?
If System Properties shows a workgroup instead of a domain, the code may have been emitted by an application, script, management agent, or setup process that is trying to locate a computer account elsewhere. Do not join the PC to a domain simply to make the message disappear.
- Record the application, command, scheduled task, or installer that displayed the error.
- Capture the full dialog and the time of the event.
- Check the application’s configuration for a stale computer name or domain reference.
- Ask the application owner or your IT administrator which identity it expects and whether the PC should be enrolled or managed.
The hexadecimal code identifies the missing-account condition, but only the calling component can establish why a non-domain PC requested that account.
What are the common mistakes when fixing this error?
- Removing the PC from the domain first: this can create avoidable profile, certificate, policy, VPN, and credential work.
- Resetting a similarly named object: verify the exact computer name and organizational unit before changing Active Directory.

Success means more than the dialog disappearing once. After the administrator-led change and restart, verify domain sign-in, policy refresh, the original application or command, file-share access, and any certificate- or VPN-dependent workflow that the PC needs. If one of those tests still fails, record the new message and event time; a remaining failure may identify a separate directory, network, policy, or application problem.
