Error 0x0000095F does not have one confirmed, universal meaning in Microsoft’s current Windows 10 and Windows 11 troubleshooting documentation. The reliable fix depends on where it appears: Windows Update, an installation, startup, a printer or other device, a game, or another application. Start by recording the complete message, the program or Windows component that displayed it, and the action that triggered it. Then follow the matching repair path below. Update-related failures usually respond to the built-in troubleshooter, removing nonessential hardware, repairing the update cache, checking drivers and disk errors, and retrying. A crash or repeated restart needs a different sequence involving Safe Mode, Device Manager, free disk space and, if necessary, System Restore.
What does error 0x0000095F mean?
On its own, 0x0000095F is not enough information to identify a fault. Microsoft’s current Windows 10 and Windows 11 support pages reviewed for this problem do not list this exact code as a standalone, documented Windows error. That means the code may be emitted by a particular installer, update component, device driver, application or recovery process rather than by one central Windows subsystem.

Do not choose a registry edit, driver replacement or download solely because a web page associates that number with a particular cause. The same hexadecimal code can appear in different contexts, and the surrounding sentence often identifies the failing component. A message saying that an update could not be installed calls for a different response from a message shown by a printer utility or a game launcher.
What to record before changing anything
- The exact application, installer or Windows screen that displays the code.
- The complete message around
0x0000095F, including a file name, update number or device name. - The action that immediately preceded it, such as checking for updates, installing a program, connecting hardware or launching a game.
- Whether the error returns after a normal restart and whether Windows can still start normally.
- The Windows edition and version shown under Settings > System > About.
If the code appeared during an update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history on Windows 10. The history entry can reveal the specific update that failed, which is more useful than the code by itself.

How do I choose the correct fix for 0x0000095F?
Use the trigger and symptom as your decision point. Begin with the least disruptive action in the matching branch, and move to cache deletion, driver changes or recovery only when the earlier evidence supports it.
| Where the code appears | First checks | Next manual action | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update or an upgrade | Update history, pending restart, date and time | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, disconnect nonessential hardware and repair the update cache if needed | Failed update name and its status |
| Setup or application installation | Installer name, free space, security software and connected devices | Install current Windows and hardware-driver updates, inspect Device Manager and repair disk errors | Full installer message and setup log location, if shown |
| Startup crash or repeated restart | Recent hardware or software change and whether Safe Mode starts | Remove new hardware, check Device Manager, maintain free space and use System Restore when appropriate | Last successful boot and any stop or restart details |
| Printer, USB, Wi-Fi, audio or another device | Device Manager status and whether disconnecting the device changes the symptom | Install the current driver from the hardware maker and test again | Device name, model and any warning icon |
| One game or application only | Whether other programs work and whether the app has its own update history | Use the application’s repair or update option, then check Windows and device drivers | Application version and complete dialog text |
How do I fix 0x0000095F during Windows Update or setup?
Follow this sequence when the code appears while Windows is downloading, installing or upgrading. Restart after the troubleshooting steps that request it, then try the same update or setup operation again.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Run the built-in troubleshooter. In Windows 11, open the Get Help app and choose the Windows Update troubleshooter, or go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. In Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
- Restart and check again. When the troubleshooter finishes, restart Windows. Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates. A pending restart can prevent a subsequent update from completing.
- Disconnect nonessential hardware. Shut down if necessary and unplug printers, scanners, USB drives, external disks, docks and other accessories that are not required for the update. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display and network connection attached. Reconnect devices one at a time after the update succeeds.
- Install all available Windows updates. Apply cumulative, servicing and optional hardware-driver updates that Windows offers. If setup is blocked before Windows can update, install the latest updates available for the existing installation first, then retry the upgrade.
- Inspect Device Manager. Right-click Start, choose Device Manager, and look for a yellow warning icon. Expand categories associated with the hardware named in the message. Open a device’s Properties and read the status on the General tab before deciding whether a driver change is needed.
- Temporarily remove third-party security software only when necessary. Microsoft lists non-Microsoft antivirus or security software as a possible installation conflict. Use the vendor’s normal uninstall process, confirm that you can reinstall it, and do not leave the computer without protection longer than the test requires. Reinstall the product after the update attempt if it was the cause.
- Check the system disk. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), run
chkdsk /f C:, and follow the prompt to schedule the check if Windows says the volume is in use. Save open work before the restart. Disk errors can prevent update files from being read or committed. - Confirm automatic time. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time in Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time in Windows 10. Turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone selection where available, then select Sync now. Incorrect clock information can interfere with update services and signed packages.
- Update third-party drivers from the hardware maker. If the failure names a graphics adapter, storage controller, network adapter, printer or another device, obtain the current Windows 10 or Windows 11 driver for the exact model from its manufacturer. Avoid installing a driver for a similar model or an incompatible Windows edition.
How do I reset Windows Update files safely?
Use this branch when the troubleshooter does not clear the failure, Update history shows the same package failing repeatedly, or the message suggests damaged or incomplete update files. Clearing the cache removes downloaded update material; it does not remove your personal documents.

- Sign in with an administrator account and save your work.
- Press Windows + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update, right-click it and select Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents inside that folder, not the parent
Windowsfolder. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and close any update-related window before retrying. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update and select Start.
- Restart the computer, open Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If the folder cannot be cleared even after the service is stopped, restart Windows and repeat the procedure before attempting more invasive changes. Do not delete unrelated folders under C:Windows; doing so can make Windows unbootable.
What should I do if 0x0000095F appears with a crash or repeated restart?
A restart loop, blue-screen-like stop, or sudden crash needs a stability check rather than an update-cache reset. Microsoft’s general stop-error guidance starts with recent hardware, Safe Mode, drivers, free disk space, current updates and System Restore.
- Remove recently added hardware. Power down and disconnect a newly installed USB device, expansion card, dock, storage device or other accessory. If the restarts stop, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the trigger.
- Try Safe Mode. From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Select a Safe Mode option. If Windows is stable there, a recently loaded driver or startup program becomes more likely than a basic Windows file failure.
- Check Device Manager in Safe Mode or normal Windows. Look for warning icons, recently changed devices and hardware whose driver date or version changed immediately before the problem. Use the device’s documented rollback or uninstall option only when you know which recent change caused the symptom.
- Maintain adequate free space. Open Settings > System > Storage and review the system drive. Remove or move files you no longer need using normal Windows storage tools, keeping enough room for updates, temporary files and a recovery operation.
- Install current Windows updates. Once the machine is stable enough to remain running, apply pending updates and restart. A current driver or system component may resolve a crash that started after an earlier change.
- Use System Restore if the timing is clear. Search for Create a restore point, open System Properties, select System Restore, and choose a restore point created before the restarts began. Review the affected programs before confirming. System Restore requires an existing restore point and can remove drivers or applications installed after that point.
If Safe Mode also crashes, disconnect external devices and preserve any important files before repeated restart attempts. The code still does not prove that a particular component is defective; the timing and Device Manager evidence matter.

Is 0x0000095F a driver or hardware problem?
It might be, but the code alone cannot establish that. A warning icon, a device named in the complete message, or a failure that begins immediately after a hardware or driver change provides stronger evidence than the hexadecimal value.
Microsoft Learn publishes a general analysis of Windows stop errors—not this specific code—in which 70% are attributed to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware issues, 5% to Microsoft code and 15% to unknown causes because memory is too corrupted to analyze. Those percentages describe stop errors as a broad category and must not be used as a diagnosis for 0x0000095F or for an update failure.
When a driver check is justified
- The full message names a graphics, network, storage, audio, Bluetooth, USB or printer device.
- The error began after installing, updating or rolling back a driver.
- Device Manager shows a yellow warning icon or a device status error.
- Safe Mode works while normal startup fails.
When hardware testing is more appropriate
- The machine restarts under load and the symptom follows a newly installed component.
- The same device disconnects, disappears from Device Manager or fails on another compatible port.
- Disk checking reports errors, or Windows cannot reliably read the system volume.
What if the code appears in one application only?
When Windows Update history is clean and the desktop remains stable, treat the application as the initial suspect. Capture the application name and version, install any update supplied by its publisher, and use its built-in repair or verification feature if one exists. If the application is an installer, retry after disconnecting nonessential devices and completing pending Windows updates.

Check whether the same action works in another user account or after a normal restart, but do not delete application data before backing up saves, profiles or configuration files. If only one program fails while other programs and Windows services work, a system-wide driver replacement is less justified than an application repair, reinstall or support log review.

Which fixes should I try first, and which are reversible?
The order below minimizes the chance of making the problem harder to diagnose. Stop when the original action works and record what changed.
| Action | Reversibility | Why it comes at this point | What to verify afterward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Record the full message and trigger | Fully reversible | Prevents a speculative fix | The same operation and context are documented |
| Restart and run the built-in troubleshooter | Fully reversible | Uses Windows diagnostics without deleting data | Whether the troubleshooter reports and resolves a problem |
| Disconnect nonessential hardware | Fully reversible | Quickly separates accessory conflicts | Whether the update or startup completes with devices unplugged |
| Install Windows and manufacturer driver updates | Usually reversible through documented rollback | Addresses known compatibility and device issues | Driver version, Device Manager status and restart behavior |
Clear SoftwareDistribution contents |
Rebuildable but not a simple undo | Removes potentially damaged downloaded update files | Windows Update downloads a fresh package |
| Temporarily uninstall third-party security software | Reinstall required | Tests a documented setup conflict | Update result and successful security-software reinstall |
| System Restore | Reversible only if a later restore point exists | Returns system files, drivers and applications to an earlier state | The restore summary and whether the crash stops |
What mistakes should I avoid while troubleshooting?
- Do not assume the hexadecimal number identifies a single Microsoft component when the current support documentation does not list it.
- Do not download a random DLL or an unofficial driver advertised as a code fix. It may be incompatible or unsafe and can obscure the original cause.
- Do not delete the entire
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionfolder while Windows Update is running. Stop the service first and remove only its contents. - Do not uninstall security software without confirming that it can be reinstalled and without limiting the test to the time needed for the update attempt.
- Do not repeatedly force-power-off a machine that is applying an update unless it is completely unresponsive and you have no safer recovery option.
- Do not use System Restore before checking which applications and drivers it will affect.
- Do not treat general stop-error percentages as proof that this particular code is caused by a driver or hardware fault.
How do I confirm that the problem is fixed?
Repeat the exact action that originally produced the message: run the same update, launch the same application, connect the same device or complete the same setup stage. A successful restart is not sufficient if the error happened only during a later installation phase.
Best Value
After an update repair, check Update history for a successful entry. After a driver change, reopen Device Manager and verify that the warning icon is gone and the device performs its normal function. After a crash or restart repair, use the computer normally through several restarts and the workload that previously triggered the failure before reconnecting optional hardware.
If the code returns, record what changed between attempts, including the update identifier, driver version, device connection and full message. That record gives Microsoft support, the hardware maker or the application publisher evidence that a code-only search cannot provide.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files, while also offering system-load tweaks, temporary and cache cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus protection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep using Windows if the code appears only once?
If the original operation completed and the code has not returned after a restart, you can continue using the computer while monitoring Update history and application behavior. Keep the full message and trigger recorded so a recurring failure can be compared with the first incident.
Will clearing SoftwareDistribution delete my personal files?
Removing the contents of that update-cache folder targets downloaded update material, not documents, photos or installed applications. The Windows Update service must be stopped first, and Windows will download replacement files when you check for updates again.
Does System Restore roll Windows back to an earlier version?
System Restore uses an existing restore point to return selected system files, drivers and applications to an earlier state; it is not a feature-upgrade rollback. Review the affected-program list and make sure important personal files are backed up before confirming.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should I do if there is no Update history entry for 0x0000095F?
Treat the emitting program or device as the starting point instead of assuming Windows Update is involved. Reproduce the error once, capture the complete dialog and inspect that application’s logs or the named device in Device Manager.
