Error 0x000008A6 is the Windows networking status NERR_StandaloneLogon. Microsoft defines it as: “The logon server was not specified. The computer will be logged on as STANDALONE.” On a personal computer that is not joined to a work or school domain, this can describe an expected fallback rather than a hardware fault. On a domain-joined PC, it usually means Windows cannot select or contact the organization’s logon server. Identify where the code appeared and whether you are on the required network before changing domain membership, credentials or security settings.
What does error 0x000008A6 mean?
The symbolic name for 0x000008A6 is NERR_StandaloneLogon. Windows did not receive a usable logon-server selection, so it will treat the computer as standalone for that logon attempt. The status belongs to the Windows networking and logon family, alongside messages about missing user paths, logon scripts, conflicting logon servers and unavailable domain controllers.

How should I identify the source before changing anything?
Do not troubleshoot the code in isolation. Capture the context while the message is visible, because the same number can be interpreted differently by a third-party program.

- Copy the complete sentence, including any server, domain, username or path shown with the code. A photograph is useful if the message appears before sign-in.
- Record whether it appeared at the Windows sign-in screen, while connecting to a network share, during a script or policy operation, or inside a particular application.
- Note the Windows edition and build. Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and record the version displayed. - Write down whether the PC is meant to be domain-joined, workgroup-only, or managed through another organization identity service.
- Repeat the check on the organization’s LAN and, if permitted, its corporate VPN. If the problem occurs only away from that network, that pattern is important evidence.
- If an application rather than Windows displays the code, open that product’s help pages and logs first. Do not assume the application uses Microsoft’s
NERR_StandaloneLogondefinition.
Is 0x000008A6 normal on a personal Windows 10 or 11 PC?
It can be. A computer that is not joined to a domain has no domain logon server to contact, so a standalone logon state may be expected. If Windows signs you in normally and no domain resources are required, there may be nothing to repair.
Check the account type under Settings > Accounts. A local account, or a Microsoft account used on a personal device, does not need an Active Directory logon server. If the message is only a notification from an old utility or installer, use that program’s documentation instead of changing Windows domain settings.

Investigate further when the PC is supposed to authenticate against a company or school domain, when domain users cannot sign in, or when access to domain shares, policies and scripts fails. In those cases, continue with the network and domain checks below.
How do I restore the network path to the logon server?
A domain controller must be reachable through the organization’s network and correctly advertised by DNS. Work through these checks in order, starting with the least disruptive.
Connect to the required LAN or VPN
- Connect an office PC to the organization’s wired or Wi-Fi network. For a remote PC, establish the organization-approved VPN before attempting a domain sign-in. Some VPN clients connect only after a local user signs in; in that arrangement, use cached domain credentials or contact IT for the organization’s pre-logon VPN method.
- Open Settings > Network & internet and confirm that the adapter is connected. Avoid using a guest Wi-Fi network that deliberately blocks internal DNS and domain services.
- If the error began after changing routers, VPN software or security software, record that change and ask the administrator whether the network now uses different DNS servers.

The output should show the organization’s intended DNS servers and return an address for the domain names. A timeout, an external public DNS server, or an incorrect address points to a network or DNS configuration problem; provide the output to the administrator rather than guessing replacement DNS addresses.

ping your-domain-controller.your-domain.exampleA blocked ping does not by itself prove that the server is down, because many networks suppress ICMP. Treat it as a quick clue, not a definitive test. If the name cannot be resolved, fix DNS first. If it resolves but domain services still fail, the administrator should check firewall rules, VPN routes and domain-controller health.
Ask Windows which domain controller it sees
On a domain-joined computer, an administrator may ask you to run:
nltest /dsgetdc:your-domain.exampleA successful result identifies a domain controller and site. Errors such as “domain could not be contacted” support the conclusion that the computer lacks a usable path to the domain. Share the complete output with IT; do not publish internal server names or addresses in a public forum.
How do I verify the computer’s domain membership?
Windows may display a standalone fallback when the PC is no longer correctly associated with its domain. Checking membership is safe; repairing it can disrupt profiles and should normally be handled by an administrator.

- Open Settings > System > About and select Domain or workgroup (the exact link can vary by Windows build), or press
Win+R, entersysdm.cpl, and open the Computer Name tab. - Confirm the listed domain matches the organization’s current domain. If it shows WORKGROUP on a PC that should be managed by a domain, stop and contact IT before joining anything manually.
- Do not remove and rejoin the domain merely to clear the message. Rejoining can require local administrator credentials, a domain account, a reboot and migration of the computer’s secure-channel relationship; an incorrect procedure can leave users with temporary or duplicate profiles.
An administrator can test the secure channel in PowerShell with Test-ComputerSecureChannel. A false result indicates that the trust relationship needs administrative repair. Depending on the organization’s process, the administrator may reset the computer account, repair the secure channel, or remove and rejoin the domain.
Could an incorrect clock cause the standalone logon message?
Yes. Domain authentication relies on synchronized time, and a substantial difference between the PC and domain controllers can prevent authentication even when the network is otherwise available.
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically where your organization permits those settings. Verify the displayed time zone manually if automatic detection is wrong.
- Select Sync now. On managed PCs, policy may control the time source; do not replace it with a public server without approval.
- For a diagnostic record, run
w32tm /query /statusin Command Prompt. Give the result to the administrator if synchronization fails.
What account and server checks should an administrator make?
If DNS, connectivity, membership and time look correct, the remaining causes are often on the identity-service side rather than the local hardware.
- Confirm that the user account is active, not locked or expired, and permitted to sign in to that computer under the organization’s policy.
- Verify that at least one domain controller and its logon services are operating. A single unavailable controller can expose site, replication or DNS problems.
- Check whether a logon-server policy, script or group policy specifies a server that no longer exists or cannot be reached from the current site.
- Review the organization’s VPN and firewall rules for the ports and protocols required by its directory and authentication services.
- Look in Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and Applications and Services Logs for events recorded at the same time as the failure. Preserve the event source, ID and full text.
Do not repeatedly reset a password before confirming the domain and server context. A password change cannot repair a missing DNS route, an unavailable controller or a broken computer trust relationship, and repeated attempts can trigger account lockout rules.

General Windows maintenance is secondary. Use it when the code appears alongside broader update, startup or stability problems, not as a substitute for domain troubleshooting.

Install Windows and approved driver updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install updates approved for your organization and restart when requested.
- Open Device Manager and look for warning icons. For managed hardware, obtain drivers from the device manufacturer or your organization’s deployment system rather than installing random driver packages.
- If the issue started after a driver update, an administrator can review the device’s Properties > Driver tab and use an approved rollback procedure.
Use Safe Mode only for startup-related symptoms
If Windows repeatedly fails to start or a startup program prevents sign-in, select Windows Recovery Environment > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then choose Safe Mode. Safe Mode can help isolate a third-party startup component; it cannot restore a missing domain controller or repair directory services.
Use recovery options when the operating system itself is unstable
Back up important files first. Windows Recovery Environment provides options such as Startup Repair, System Restore and Uninstall Updates, depending on the installation. These options address boot or update failures, not a domain policy that names an unreachable logon server. On a managed PC, coordinate with IT before using a reset or reinstall, because those actions can remove organizational software and local profiles.
For update-related symptoms, refresh update components carefully
If 0x000008A6 appears during an update workflow rather than at sign-in, follow the organization’s update procedure. Microsoft’s general guidance includes synchronizing date and time, clearing the Windows Update cache and updating third-party drivers when update failures persist. Stop if a step requires disabling security controls or deleting system folders without administrator approval.

When should I stop troubleshooting and contact IT?
Contact the organization’s administrator when the PC should be domain-joined, when nslookup cannot find the domain, when the secure-channel test fails, or when several users cannot authenticate. Provide the full message, Windows build, whether you were on LAN or VPN, command output, exact time and any recent network or policy changes. This lets the administrator distinguish a local configuration issue from a domain-controller, DNS, VPN or account outage.
If the computer is personal and works normally outside the application that displayed the code, contact that application’s support instead. Keep its logs and exact wording; applying domain repairs to a standalone PC can create a new configuration problem.

Can I sign in without a domain controller when I am traveling?
Possibly. Windows may use cached domain credentials from a previous successful sign-in, but new users, password changes and some network resources still require contact with the organization’s domain services. Connect to the approved VPN as soon as possible and follow your organization’s offline-sign-in policy.
Will changing DNS to a public server fix 0x000008A6?
Usually not on a domain network. Active Directory depends on the organization’s DNS records, which public resolvers do not host; replacing the configured DNS can make discovery worse. Ask the administrator which DNS servers the LAN or VPN is supposed to provide.
What if the message appears only when opening a shared folder?
That points to a network-resource or authentication context rather than a general Windows boot fault. Check the share’s server name with the administrator, confirm the VPN or LAN route, and preserve the complete error text from File Explorer or the application that requested the share.
Does leaving and rejoining the domain delete my files?
The operation can create a new Windows profile or remove access to the old domain profile even when files remain on disk. Have an administrator back up the profile and document permissions before changing membership; do not perform the procedure solely to test whether the code disappears.
