Error 0x000006B6 means RPC_S_NO_BINDINGS—Microsoft’s wording is “There are no bindings.” It identifies an RPC binding failure, not a specific broken printer or service. The right fix depends on what was failing: a local print queue needs spooler and driver checks, while a shared printer may need client/server RPC and firewall troubleshooting. First record the application, action, device or service involved, and any surrounding message. Do not substitute the diagnosis for 0x000006BA, which is the separate RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE error.
What does error 0x000006B6 mean?
Microsoft lists hexadecimal 0x000006B6 as decimal error 1718, RPC_S_NO_BINDINGS, with the text “There are no bindings.” In practical terms, an application tried to contact an RPC service but did not receive a usable binding for that operation. The number describes the failed RPC step; it does not identify which application, endpoint, driver, or network device caused it.

This distinction matters because the same code can appear during different operations. A print job, adding a shared printer, a script contacting a remote service, or another application’s client/server call can all fail at an RPC binding stage. Treat the code as a starting clue and diagnose the operation that produced it.
Do not confuse it with 0x000006BA. Microsoft defines that separate code as RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE. A guide for 0x000006BA may recommend a different investigation, so confirm the digits in the complete message before following one.

What should I record before changing Windows?
Write down the context while the failure is still reproducible. This prevents a printer-specific fix from being applied to an unrelated RPC failure and gives an administrator useful information if the problem is remote.
- The exact action: for example, printing from one program, adding a shared printer, opening a document, running a script, or contacting a remote service.
- The application and version: note whether the error appears in one program or in every program performing the same action.
- The endpoint: identify the local computer, a USB or network printer, a print server, or another remote computer involved.
- The complete wording: capture text shown before or after the hexadecimal code, including any named service, printer, server, or file.
- The scope: check whether another user or computer sees the same failure. One affected endpoint points toward local configuration; several affected endpoints make a shared service, server, or network path more relevant. This is a troubleshooting heuristic, not a guarantee.
- Recent changes: note driver replacement, printer migration, firewall-policy changes, or a change from local to shared printing. Do not assume that a recent Windows update is the cause without evidence from the failing operation.
Which troubleshooting path fits the symptom?
Use the narrowest branch that matches what failed. Start with low-risk local checks, then move to administrator-level network diagnostics only when the operation actually uses a shared or remote endpoint.

How do I fix 0x000006B6 when printing to a local printer?
When the failing operation is a printer connected directly to your computer, work through the queue, spooler, connection, and driver in that order. These steps address common printing failures, but the RPC code alone does not prove that the printer is the root cause.
1. Check the printer connection and queue
- Confirm the printer is powered on and connected through the expected USB, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Bluetooth path. If the printer has an offline indicator, clear that condition before continuing.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer and open its queue. Cancel jobs that remain stuck or repeatedly show an error.
- Try a small test print. If only one application fails, repeat the test from a different application and keep the original application details for later diagnosis.
Canceling a job removes that pending job from the Windows queue; it does not repair a remote print server or explain an RPC failure in another application.
2. Restart Print Spooler
- Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Print Spooler in the service list.
- Right-click it and choose Restart. If it is stopped, choose Start.
- Retry the same print action and note whether the error returns immediately or only after a particular document or application is used.
A spooler restart is a normal first check for printing symptoms. It is not a universal 0x000006B6 cure, because the code can originate in a different RPC operation.
3. Check for an incorrect or duplicate printer driver
Open Device Manager and expand the printer-related device entries. Look for unnecessary, old, duplicate, or incompatible entries associated with the affected model. A driver intended for a different model or operating-system architecture can prevent normal queue communication.

Obtain the current driver for the exact printer model from the printer manufacturer. Compare the model name and Windows compatibility before installing it. If several driver entries exist for the same device, remove only entries you can positively identify as obsolete; keep a working printer configuration available until the replacement is ready.
After installing the correct driver, return to the printer queue and print a test page. If Windows cannot find the device at all, continue with the recognition steps below rather than repeatedly sending jobs to a missing queue.
4. Perform Microsoft’s deeper spooler reset
Use this reset when stuck jobs or damaged spool files continue to return after a normal queue cancellation. It removes every pending print job on that computer, so save documents and warn other local users first.
- Open
services.msc, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Stop. - In File Explorer, enter
%WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERSin the address bar. Approve an administrator prompt if Windows requests one. - Delete the files inside that
PRINTERSfolder. Do not delete the folder itself. - Return to Services, start Print Spooler, and open its properties.
- Set Startup type to Automatic, apply the setting, and retry the print operation.
This procedure clears queued spool files; it does not erase the original documents in your applications. If the queue immediately repopulates, identify which application or device is submitting the job before repeating the reset.

Use this branch when the symptom is “printer not found,” a missing device, or a printer that disappears from Settings. Check the physical, network, or Bluetooth connection first. Then restart Print Spooler, update or reinstall the correct driver, remove the unavailable printer from Printers & scanners, and add it again using the manufacturer’s documented connection method.
Re-adding a printer can create a new queue and discard the old queue’s settings. Record the printer’s address, preferred paper settings, and any shared-queue name before removal. If other computers still print successfully, compare their connection method and driver model with the affected computer instead of changing the working machines.

How do I troubleshoot 0x000006B6 with a shared printer or print server?
A shared printer adds a client/server RPC path. On Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, Microsoft says print-related RPC communication uses RPC over TCP by default. The client must reach the server’s RPC Endpoint Mapper and the dynamic RPC port assigned to the print service.
Verify the network path before changing settings
- Confirm the client is on the intended network and can resolve and reach the print server’s computer name.
- Check whether the failure affects one client or many. A simultaneous failure is more consistent with a server or network condition than with one local queue.
- Ask the administrator whether a firewall policy, segmentation rule, or server change occurred at the same time as the error.
- Do not disable the firewall broadly or open unrelated ports as a test. Security policy should be reviewed by the person who manages the network.
Understand the RPC ports involved
Microsoft’s print RPC guidance calls out TCP port 135 for the RPC Endpoint Mapper and the dynamic RPC range 49152–65535 for the assigned service port. The exact allowed range or a controlled port configuration depends on the organization’s documented administrative policy. A rule that permits port 135 but blocks the assigned dynamic port can still produce a binding failure.

Use PortQry and traces for administrator-level diagnosis
Microsoft documents using PortQry to query the server’s endpoint mapper on port 135. The response can show the endpoint and dynamic port assigned to the print-related RPC service. Test that assigned port from the client as well. If port 135 responds but the assigned dynamic port cannot be reached, packet filtering or a firewall rule is a strong line of investigation.
For an intermittent or disputed failure, collect simultaneous network traces on the relevant client and server while reproducing the error. Compare the RPC endpoint registration, the port selected by the mapper, and the packets returned or blocked. Network traces and port-policy changes belong with administrators who understand the organization’s security controls; they are not routine consumer fixes.
What about RPC over Named Pipes?
RPC over Named Pipes remains a configurable compatibility option in some Windows 11 print environments, but Microsoft says it is disabled by default and is not recommended as the normal configuration. Treat it as a managed exception for a known compatibility requirement, not as a first-line fix for 0x000006B6. Changing protocol policy, registry values, or Group Policy without documenting the server and client configuration can create a different connectivity problem.

What if the error does not involve printing?
Do not force a spooler reset when the failing action was a script, a remote-service call, or another application operation. Return to the record you made at the start and identify the RPC client and endpoint that were actually involved.
When only one application fails
Repeat the action once and capture the complete message. Test an equivalent action in another application only if it uses the same endpoint. If the second application works, preserve the first program’s version, configuration, and exact operation for its administrator or vendor; the Windows error number alone does not identify that program’s binding setup.
When a remote service fails for several users
Check whether the service is running on the remote computer and whether the affected clients share a network segment or policy. Ask the administrator to verify endpoint registration, port reachability, and any recent firewall or server changes. Avoid changing local printer settings when no printer is part of the failed operation.
When the endpoint is local
Confirm that the local service or application named in the surrounding message is installed and running, then reproduce the action with the same account and permissions. If the operation depends on a device driver or adapter, document the device and driver version before replacing anything. A driver change is relevant only when the failed operation actually uses that device.
How do Windows 11 and Windows 10 differ for this error?
The basic code meaning is the same on both systems. Microsoft’s printer troubleshooting guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, so the queue, spooler, connection, and driver checks above apply to both, with the Settings paths shown for each version.
For shared printing, pay attention to the Windows 11 release: Microsoft documents RPC over TCP as the default for print communication on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. A mixed environment may therefore have clients using different defaults, making the server’s firewall and protocol policy important.
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That is a support-status consideration, not proof that upgrading will resolve this RPC error. Preserve the operation details and troubleshoot the relevant endpoint before treating an operating-system change as a solution.
What mistakes make 0x000006B6 harder to diagnose?
- Assuming every instance is a printer problem: the code is an RPC binding status and can arise outside printing.
- Confusing 0x000006B6 with 0x000006BA: verify every digit before applying a server-unavailable guide.
- Restarting services without recording the trigger: a restart can clear a symptom while leaving the actual remote endpoint or application unknown.
- Deleting spool files without warning: the deeper reset removes all queued jobs on that computer.
- Installing a generic driver: match the exact printer model and Windows edition instead of selecting a similar-looking package.
- Opening the entire dynamic range casually: port policy should be limited and documented by the network administrator.
- Switching to Named Pipes as a guess: Microsoft describes it as a non-recommended, disabled-by-default compatibility option.
