Error 0x0000064E is Windows Installer error 1614, ERROR_PRODUCT_UNINSTALLED. Microsoft’s description is “Product is uninstalled.” It means an Installer operation is referring to a product that Windows Installer currently considers uninstalled; the code does not identify the program or prove that Windows, a printer, or a driver is broken. The safest fix is to record the application and operation that produced the message, then follow the publisher’s supported install, repair, update, or removal procedure. Do not start by deleting Installer cache files, copying them from another PC, or running a generic registry cleaner.
What does error 0x0000064E mean?
Windows Installer assigns hexadecimal 0x0000064E to decimal error 1614, named ERROR_PRODUCT_UNINSTALLED. In Microsoft’s Windows Error Codes reference (release November 19, 2024), the exact description is “Product is uninstalled.” An MSI action has therefore reached a product state that Windows Installer treats as removed.

The code is a status from the Windows Installer service, not a diagnosis of the computer. It does not tell you which application is involved, whether you clicked Install, Update, Repair, or Uninstall, or why the product state is inconsistent. The same number can appear with entirely different applications and recovery paths.
Do not confuse this number with a Device Manager status code. Device Manager uses separate device-status codes for hardware and driver problems; 0x0000064E is listed by Microsoft as a Windows Installer code.

What should I check before trying a fix?
Capture the context first. A product-specific installer can use the same Windows Installer service as many other programs, so a generic “repair” command can make the situation harder to understand.
- Write down the application name. Include the product edition, version if shown, and whether it is a printer utility, office application, security product, or another MSI-based program.
- Record the operation. Note whether you were installing, updating, repairing, or removing the program. Include the complete error text and any referenced file name.
- Check whether the application is actually present. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10. If the program is absent, an attempted repair or update may simply be targeting an uninstalled product.
- Identify your Windows edition and architecture. Open Settings > System > About and record the Windows version, edition, and system type. Use these details when downloading a replacement installer or driver.
- Save the installer log or screenshot. If the dialog names an MSI package, product code, or missing cache file, keep that information for the application maker’s support team.
Once you know the operation and affected product, choose the matching branch below. There is no single command that safely fixes every instance of 1614.
How do I fix 0x0000064E when I meant to install a program?
Use a current installer for the exact application and Windows configuration. An install attempt should not be converted into a repair of an unknown product.
1. Obtain the correct package
Download the installer from the application publisher’s official support or download page. Match the product edition and version, and choose the package for your Windows system type when the publisher offers separate packages. If the publisher supplies an EXE bootstrapper and an MSI, follow its documented choice rather than substituting one package for another.
2. Close the old installer and retry
Cancel the failed setup, close other instances of that application, and run the newly obtained installer. If Windows requests elevation, approve it only after confirming the publisher and file name. Follow the vendor’s options for a clean install or for retaining existing settings.
3. Use msiexec only with the publisher’s instructions
Microsoft documents msiexec for installing and configuring MSI packages, but the product code, transforms, properties, and switches are specific to the application. A typical install syntax is msiexec /i "pathpackage.msi"; replace the path only with the package supplied for your product and use additional options only when the vendor documents them. Do not guess a product code or point the command at an unrelated MSI.

4. If the new install still reports 1614
Return to the application’s support process with the complete message, the installer version, and the Windows version from Settings > System > About. The publisher can determine whether an older product registration, a superseded package, or another supported cleanup step is involved.
How do I repair an application that should still be installed?
First prove that the product is installed, then use its documented repair method. Error 1614 means Windows Installer does not currently regard the referenced product as installed, even if a shortcut or folder remains.
Verify the installed state
Look for the application under Windows’ Installed apps list and open it if possible. A leftover folder, desktop shortcut, or file association is not proof that the MSI registration is intact. If the application is missing from the list, obtain the publisher’s installer and support instructions instead of forcing a repair.
Run the publisher’s repair workflow
Some vendors expose Repair from the application’s entry in Installed apps; others require their setup program or a command containing a documented product code. Microsoft documents repair operations through msiexec, but the correct product code and command-line properties belong to the affected application. Use only the values supplied by the vendor or shown in its official documentation.
Restart and test the application
After a supported repair, restart Windows if the installer requests it and test the function that originally failed. If the same 1614 dialog returns, stop repeating the repair and provide the installer log and product details to the application maker.
What should I do if 0x0000064E appears during an update or uninstall?
An update or removal can call an older MSI product record. The code alone does not establish whether that record is stale, partially removed, or intentionally absent, so use the affected application’s support procedure.

For an update
- Confirm the product name and the update version shown in the dialog or updater.
- Check the publisher’s support page for the current full installer or a documented update package.
- Follow its order of operations. Some vendors require the existing version to be repaired or removed before the new version is installed; others provide a single full installer.
- Keep the exact error text and any MSI log if the update fails again.
For an uninstall
Use Settings > Apps or the application’s own uninstaller when the product is listed. If removal fails with 1614, do not delete random registry entries or MSI files. Ask the vendor for its supported removal tool or procedure, identifying the product and Windows version.
When the program is already gone
If the application is no longer present but its updater or uninstall entry remains, the publisher is the party that can identify the correct cleanup method. Removing a leftover folder does not reconstruct Windows Installer’s product registration and can remove files needed by another component.
What if the message mentions a missing Windows Installer cache file?
Stop before deleting, renaming, or copying cache contents. Microsoft explains that the Windows Installer cache is used during uninstall, repair, and update operations, and that cached files are unique to the individual installation. A file copied from another computer is not a valid replacement.
Safe response
- Record the complete path and file name shown in the error.
- Do not use a registry cleaner or a download that promises to rebuild the cache.
- Contact the application publisher or its support team and provide the product name, version, Windows version, and the missing-file message.
- Follow only a recovery package or procedure that the publisher identifies for that exact product.
Microsoft says it does not recommend or endorse third-party products that claim to rebuild or repair the Windows Installer cache. That warning is especially important when a utility asks you to replace MSI files or edit Installer registry data without identifying the affected product.
Is 0x0000064E a printer or driver error?
Not by itself. The number remains a Windows Installer product-state error. It becomes a printer-related case only when the affected MSI is printer software or the dialog appears alongside a separate printing or device-installation symptom.
If the failed MSI belongs to printer software
- Record the exact printer model and the Windows version and system type shown under Settings > System > About.
- Visit the printer manufacturer’s support page and obtain the package that matches that model and Windows configuration.
- Use Windows’ printer settings or the manufacturer’s documented installer. Microsoft’s driver guidance recommends trying the Windows-provided driver where appropriate and removing, reinstalling, or rolling back a printer driver when the driver itself is the problem.
- Retry the application installation only after confirming that the package is for the correct model.
If printing is failing separately
A stuck queue, a printer that is not detected, or jobs that never print requires printer troubleshooting rather than a generic Installer repair. Microsoft’s printer guidance covers running the Windows printer troubleshooter, reinstalling the printer, installing the latest compatible driver, and resetting the Print Spooler. Apply those steps only when you observe a printing symptom; they are not a universal remedy for error 1614.

If Windows reports a device-installation problem
Open Device Manager, inspect the device’s status and driver details, and use the SetupAPI installation logs to locate the failing device-install step. Device Manager’s own status code, if present, is separate from 0x0000064E and should be researched as a driver or hardware issue.

Microsoft’s documented meaning is the same on both releases: 0x0000064E is ERROR_PRODUCT_UNINSTALLED. The difference is usually the application’s supported package, the Windows release, the system architecture, or the device model, not the definition of the error code.
Use the version displayed in Settings > System > About and the exact manufacturer support page when a printer or other device is involved. Driver instructions can differ by Windows release and architecture, so do not assume that a package for Windows 10 or a 32-bit system is suitable for Windows 11 or a 64-bit system.
If the message appeared during a broader Windows installation or upgrade, Microsoft’s general advice includes removing nonessential external hardware and installing important updates before retrying. Those are general upgrade precautions, not a targeted treatment for Installer error 1614; continue to identify the affected application first.
