Error 0x0000044D is Windows error 1101, ERROR_FILEMARK_DETECTED: “A tape access reached a filemark.” It usually points to a tape, virtual-tape, backup-job, or tape-position condition rather than a single Windows 10 or Windows 11 defect. The code alone cannot tell you whether the cause is the backup application, the device path, the media, or a separate Windows servicing problem.
Start by recording where the message appeared and whether a physical or virtual tape target was involved. Then follow the matching branch below. General Windows repair commands can help when system components are damaged, but they will not correct a bad tape, an incorrect tape position, or defective drive hardware.

What does error 0x0000044D mean?
Microsoft defines hexadecimal 0x0000044D as decimal 1101, with the symbolic name ERROR_FILEMARK_DETECTED. Its official message is, “A tape access reached a filemark.” A filemark is a control marker written on tape to indicate a boundary in the recorded data. When software reaches that marker, it may stop, report end-of-data, or return an error if the operation expected more data.
This is a generic Win32 status, not a diagnosis of one Windows component. A cross-reference associates 0x44D with modules including autochk.exe, RelPost.exe, gpsvc.dll and webservices.dll, among others. Those names identify places that can surface the status; they do not prove that a particular DLL or executable caused your incident.

The same number can therefore appear in very different situations:
- A backup or restore job is reading a tape and reaches a filemark earlier than the job expects.
- The wrong tape, wrong sequence member, or wrong logical position is loaded.
- A tape drive, virtual tape library, controller, or driver returns an unexpected position.
- A Windows setup or servicing operation reports the code while another underlying problem is present.
Because no reliable prevalence or success-rate statistic has been established for this code, treat the surrounding log entry and operation as more informative than the number by itself.

Is 0x0000044D a Windows Update error?
Not by definition. The Microsoft definition describes a tape filemark, so a backup or tape workflow is the first context to investigate. If the code appeared during Windows Setup, an upgrade, or another non-tape task, use the installation and system-integrity checks below instead of assuming Windows Update itself generated a tape failure.

What should I record before changing anything?
Write down the exact operation and preserve the original log. A reset, retension, reinstall, or retry can change the tape position and make the first failure harder to reconstruct.
- Capture the complete message. Record the hexadecimal code, decimal value if shown, symbolic name, and the sentence surrounding it.
- Identify the application and job. Note the backup, restore, archive, catalog, or setup program; job name; task start time; and the action that failed.
- Identify the target. Record the physical drive or library slot, virtual tape target, controller, media identifier, and tape sequence number where available.
- Save logs before retrying. Export the application log and copy relevant Windows Event Viewer entries. Include timestamps in UTC or your local time zone and keep the original files unchanged.
- Check whether tape was involved. If no physical or virtual tape device was selected, do not force a tape-oriented fix. Follow the setup or servicing branch that matches the operation.
Microsoft provides an Error Lookup Tool that resolves hexadecimal system-error values to their defined messages. Use it to confirm the numeric mapping, but remember that lookup results explain the status code, not the cause of your particular failure.

How do I fix 0x0000044D during a tape backup or restore?
When a tape workflow is confirmed, work from the least destructive checks to the most specific vendor action. Do not overwrite or reinitialize media until you know whether the tape contains the only copy of required data.
1. Confirm the selected tape and sequence
Open the backup application’s job definition and verify the expected media set, tape identifier, sequence number, and destination. A restore that requests the next member of a set can stop when an earlier tape or an unrelated tape is loaded. If the application offers a “locate,” “inventory,” or “rescan” action, use it to refresh the library catalog without writing to the media.
2. Check the current tape position
A filemark can be reached because the drive is positioned at a boundary rather than at the block the job expects. Follow the application’s documented rewind, seek, or locate function and confirm the resulting position in the job log. Avoid repeatedly issuing blind forward or backward commands: each movement can alter the state that the software reports, especially with virtual tape targets.
3. Verify the operation’s end-of-data expectations
Some jobs legitimately encounter a filemark at the end of a stream. Check whether the task is supposed to stop at that marker, append another data set, or continue with the next tape. A catalog, restore, or verification task may treat the same marker differently from a backup-write task. Correct the job setting or select the next media member only after confirming the intended workflow.
4. Inspect media and drive warnings
Look for read, write, cleaning, load, unload, or sense-key warnings in the backup log and in the device’s management utility. If the drive requests cleaning, use the media type and cleaning procedure specified by its manufacturer. Do not assume that a cleaning cycle repairs damaged data; it only addresses contamination-related drive behavior when the vendor says it is appropriate.

5. Test with a known-good combination
If policy permits, test the same drive with a known-good tape, or test the suspect tape in a supported drive. Keep the test read-only when data preservation matters. A failure that follows the tape points toward media or recorded-position issues; a failure that follows the drive points toward the device path, firmware, controller, or driver. A virtual tape target requires the equivalent comparison using its host or storage-side diagnostics.
6. Check the device path without erasing evidence
Verify power, cabling, library connectivity, controller status, and the operating system’s device state. Record the drive model, firmware revision, driver version, and any warning code before uninstalling or replacing components. Vendor diagnostics are preferable to generic utilities because they understand the drive’s sense data and supported media.
7. Retry with a controlled job
After correcting the tape selection or position, run the smallest safe operation that exercises the same path. For a restore, select a limited file set or a verification pass if the application supports it. Record whether the error occurs at the same logical block or filemark; a repeatable location is useful evidence for media analysis.
How do I fix 0x0000044D during Windows Setup or an upgrade?
If no tape or virtual tape target is involved and the code appears during installation or upgrade, Microsoft’s general installation checks are the appropriate starting point. They address interference and system state; they are not a direct repair for tape media.

- Disconnect nonessential external hardware. Unplug external storage, docks, printers, scanners, and other USB devices that are not required for the installation. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection if needed, and the installation media or target storage.
- Install pending updates before retrying. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update; in Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Apply available updates, restart, and run Windows Update again until no further restart is requested.
- Check Device Manager. Right-click Start, choose Device Manager, and inspect categories for yellow warning icons. Record the device name and status text. Resolve a clearly identified device problem through the hardware manufacturer’s supported driver or firmware process rather than installing an unrelated driver package.
- Review third-party security software. Security products can interfere with setup. Use the publisher’s documented, temporary compatibility procedure; do not leave protection disabled after testing, and do not remove security software without a recovery plan.
- Check the installation disk. Use Windows’ drive properties and the manufacturer’s diagnostics to look for storage errors. Back up important data first. A disk check cannot repair a tape filemark, but it can distinguish a storage problem that only happens to be reported alongside the same Win32 status.
- Retry with the same evidence preserved. If setup fails again, save the new timestamp and logs and compare the failing phase. A change in the failing phase after hardware removal or updates is useful diagnostic information.
When should I run DISM and SFC?
Use DISM and SFC when Windows servicing symptoms or damaged system components are plausible: repeated update failures, component-store errors, or integrity-check failures. They do not reposition tape, repair a tape drive, reconstruct a damaged filemark, or recover unreadable media.

Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Run the component-store repair command documented by Microsoft:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthWait for it to finish. The percentage can pause for a long time; do not close the window solely because progress appears unchanged. If DISM reports that source files are unavailable, follow Microsoft’s current guidance for providing a matching repair source instead of downloading an arbitrary image.
- After DISM completes successfully, run the System File Checker command:
sfc /scannowRestart Windows when instructed, then repeat the original operation. If SFC reports files it could not repair, keep the CBS log and the exact result text for support. A clean SFC result does not rule out a media, position, or device-path problem.

A tape drive, library, controller, or virtual-tape host can expose the same Win32 status when communication or positioning fails. Treat the driver as one part of the path, not as proof that a driver is the cause.
- In Device Manager, note the device’s exact name, status code, driver provider, date, and version.
- Check the hardware or virtualization vendor’s support notes for the model, Windows edition, firmware, and supported media.
- Inspect Windows Event Viewer at Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System around the failure time. Filter by the relevant timestamp and save events from storage, controller, or device services.
- Do not roll back, uninstall, or replace a driver while a critical backup job is running. Schedule a maintenance window and ensure you have a recovery path.
- If a driver change is made, change one variable at a time and repeat the controlled test. Record the before-and-after versions.
Which fix should I try first?
Use the operation that produced the message to select a branch. The table keeps a general Windows checklist from being mistaken for a tape repair.

When should I contact the software or hardware vendor?
Escalate when the error repeats after the matching branch has been completed, when data recovery is at risk, or when the application and device disagree about the tape position. The code alone is insufficient for selecting a replacement drive, tape, SSD, or diagnostic product.
Send a concise evidence package:
- Exact hexadecimal and decimal codes, symbolic name, and full message.
- Application name and version, job or task name, and the operation being performed.
- Windows edition and version, computer or virtual-host details, and the time zone used in logs.
- Drive, library, controller, or virtual-tape model; firmware and driver versions; and media identifier or tape sequence.
- Relevant Event Viewer entries and the application log excerpt surrounding the failure.
- Every change already tried, including tape movement, cleaning, hardware removal, updates, DISM, SFC, or driver changes.
Ask the backup-software vendor whether the job expects another filemark, a subsequent tape member, or a specific locate operation. Ask the hardware vendor to interpret device sense data and verify support for the media and firmware combination. Keep the original media untouched until the recovery plan is agreed.

Keep the original log and note what changed before the successful run. A one-time success does not prove the media or device is healthy; schedule a verification or test job that does not overwrite important data and watch for repeated position or read warnings.

Do not erase media that may contain the only copy of needed data. Preserve it, make a read-only assessment where possible, and let the backup or hardware vendor determine whether the filemark is expected, misplaced, or evidence of media damage.
