Error 0x000002A5 is the Win32 value ERROR_EXTRANEOUS_INFORMATION. Microsoft defines it as “{Too Much Information} The specified ACL contained more information than was expected.” An ACL (access control list) controls who or what can access a file, folder, registry key, or other Windows object.
The code is not, by itself, proof of a blue screen and it does not identify the object that caused the problem. First determine whether it appeared in an application or log, or during a genuine stop-code restart. The correct repair is different: inspect and reverse the affected permission change for an application error; use Windows stop-code and crash diagnostics for a recurring restart.

Windows uses hexadecimal status values to report conditions to applications and system components. In Microsoft’s Win32 error-code specification, 0x000002A5 maps to ERROR_EXTRANEOUS_INFORMATION. The accompanying text is “{Too Much Information} The specified ACL contained more information than was expected.”
An ACL is a collection of access-control entries attached to an object such as a file, folder, registry key, service, or shared resource. Entries can grant or deny permissions to users, groups, and service accounts. In this error, the ACL data supplied to a component did not match what that component expected. The value does not say which object is involved, which account supplied the unexpected entry, or whether the ACL was created by Windows, an installer, a security product, or another application.

That distinction matters. There is no universal command that safely repairs every 0x000002A5 occurrence. Replacing permissions on the wrong object can remove intended restrictions, break an application, or make a folder less secure. Find the affected object and preserve a rollback option before making changes.
Is 0x000002A5 a blue-screen error?
Not necessarily. The same hexadecimal text can be returned by an application or API and can also be mistaken for text copied from a stop screen. A real blue screen (bug check) normally shows a complete stop-code name, a hexadecimal parameter set, and sometimes a driver or module. If the screen names a different bug check, that complete name—not 0x000002A5 alone—should guide the investigation.
Microsoft describes a system halt as Windows encountering a condition that compromises safe operation. Hardware, drivers, and related software can all cause a stop error. Therefore, treat a recurring restart as a separate crash investigation unless the event or application log clearly ties it to an ACL operation.
How do I identify where the code came from?
Before changing permissions or drivers, record the context. A short note often prevents an unsafe repair.
- Copy the complete message, including the component, file path, service name, or module if one is shown.
- Record whether the message appeared in an application, a command window, Event Viewer, Windows Setup, or a blue-screen restart.
- Write down what changed immediately beforehand: an installation, update, policy edit, permission change, driver replacement, or hardware addition.
- Note the affected Windows account and whether the problem occurs for one account or every account.
- Capture the date and time so you can match the message with event logs and installation history.
To look for related events, right-click Start, choose Event Viewer, and inspect Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the recorded time. Application-specific logs may be under Applications and Services Logs. Use Filter Current Log to narrow the time range, then save the relevant event with Save Selected Events. The hexadecimal value by itself is not enough to identify the offending object.
How do I fix 0x000002A5 when an application or permission operation shows it?
Use a reversible, object-specific process. These steps apply when the full message identifies a file, folder, registry key, service, installer, or application operation rather than a stop screen.
1. Identify the exact object and account
Read the full application message or event details for a path, object name, SID, user, or service account. If no object is named, reproduce the action while logging the application and Windows events, or contact the application vendor with the complete event. Do not guess a path from the error number.

2. Inspect the current ACL without changing it
For a file or folder, open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
icacls "C:PathToObject"
Replace the example path with the affected object. The output shows principals and permission flags, but it does not explain whether an entry is required by the application. In PowerShell, you can obtain a readable security descriptor with:
Get-Acl -LiteralPath "C:PathToObject" | Format-List
For a registry key, use the registry editor or PowerShell’s Get-Acl with a registry provider path, such as HKLM:SoftwareVendorProduct. Do not edit the registry merely because the value is present; first confirm that the key is the one named by the failing operation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →3. Look for unexpected or duplicated entries
Compare the ACL with a working machine, a known-good object created by the same application, or the application’s documented permission requirements. Pay attention to duplicated entries, explicit deny rules, inheritance that was disabled or unexpectedly enabled, and entries for accounts that no longer exist. An entry that looks unfamiliar is not automatically wrong: installers and Windows services often use service-specific accounts.
4. Back up the ACL before editing
For a file or folder tree, save the current permissions to a file on a protected location:
icacls "C:PathToObject" /save "%USERPROFILE%Desktopacl-backup.txt" /t
Keep the backup with the incident notes. The /t option includes subfolders and files, so use it only when you intend to preserve the whole tree. Test that the backup file exists before making changes.
5. Reverse the most recent permission or policy change
If the issue began immediately after an administrator changed inheritance, a security policy, or an installer permission, undo that specific change using the same management tool. If the application has a documented Repair, Reset permissions, or configuration-repair function, prefer it over manually rebuilding entries. A targeted rollback is safer than replacing the entire ACL with a generic template.

6. Repair or roll back the application
For an error that began after an installation or update, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the application, open its advanced options when available, and choose Repair or Reset. If those controls are absent, use the application’s own maintenance program. Temporarily rolling back the latest application update can confirm causation; check the vendor’s current release notes and support guidance before leaving an older release installed.
7. Restore only the affected permissions
After confirming the intended entries, make the smallest possible edit and test the original operation. Avoid commands that replace ownership or grant full control to everyone unless the application’s documentation explicitly requires them. Do not use a blanket ACL reset as a first response: it can remove service permissions, inheritance, or deliberate deny rules.
8. Preserve logs for support
Save the full event, application log, ACL output, recent-change timeline, and exact reproduction steps. Include the Windows edition and build, application version, account type, and whether the problem affects other accounts. Support staff can use this information to identify the object when the status value alone cannot.
How do I troubleshoot a recurring restart or suspected blue screen?
If the computer repeatedly restarts, freezes and reboots, or displays a genuine stop screen, follow Microsoft’s general stop-code sequence. Use the complete stop code and any named module shown on the screen; do not assume that 0x000002A5 is the diagnosis.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Remove recently added hardware
Shut down the computer and disconnect newly installed USB devices, expansion cards, docks, or other hardware that was added before the restarts began. Reconnect devices one at a time after stability returns. For internal components, follow the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s service instructions and observe electrical-safety precautions.
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
From Windows, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Restart now next to Advanced startup. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking if network access is necessary.
If Windows cannot reach Settings, interrupt startup twice by holding the power button when the Windows logo appears; on the next start, Windows should enter the recovery environment. Use the same Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings path. If the restart stops in Safe Mode, a startup service, driver, or third-party program is more likely than a basic Windows component.

3. Check Device Manager
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand categories for recently changed hardware and look for a warning icon. Open the device’s Properties > General tab for the status message, then review Driver details and the driver date. Roll back a recently updated driver when the button is available and the timing matches the failure; otherwise install a current driver from the hardware or computer manufacturer.
4. Verify free disk space
Open Settings > System > Storage and check the system drive. Windows needs working space for updates, paging, temporary files, and crash dumps. If the drive is nearly full, remove only files you recognize, move personal data to an appropriate backup location, and empty temporary locations through Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files. Do not delete unknown system or application folders manually.
5. Install current Windows updates
Go to Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when prompted. If the problem began immediately after a Windows update, note its knowledge-base identifier and use Update history to document the timing before considering a rollback. Keep a recovery option available before removing an update.
6. Test memory and storage hardware
Run the built-in memory test by pressing Win+R, entering mdsched.exe, and choosing Restart now and check for problems. For storage, use the drive manufacturer’s diagnostic utility or the diagnostics supplied by the computer maker. Event Viewer can help correlate disk, controller, or memory events, but an absence of an event does not prove that hardware is healthy.
7. Check firmware and recent services
Review BIOS/UEFI firmware notes for your exact computer or motherboard model. Firmware updates carry a risk if interrupted, so follow the manufacturer’s procedure and keep the computer on reliable power. Also review services or security software installed immediately before the crashes; disable or remove a suspect component only through its documented recovery method.

8. Use System Restore or another recovery option
If the restarts continue and a restore point predates the problem, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Read the affected-program list before confirming. If no suitable restore point exists, use the recovery option that preserves your required data and make a backup first whenever Windows remains usable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I investigate a persistent crash with dump files?
Dump analysis is appropriate when ordinary troubleshooting does not reveal the cause and the machine produces repeatable stop-code restarts. Configure a kernel or automatic memory dump in System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings, then reproduce the crash. Keep enough free space on the system drive for the selected dump type.
Best Value
Open the resulting dump in Microsoft WinDbg and run:
!analyze -v
Review the complete bug-check name, parameters, suspected module, stack, and timestamp. A module named in the analysis is a lead, not automatic proof: the faulty code may have corrupted memory earlier, and a Microsoft component can appear on the stack while a third-party driver caused the damage. Compare multiple dumps for the same pattern and retain the original files for support.
Driver Verifier can expose misbehaving drivers, but Microsoft cautions that it can slow Windows and cause additional crashes. Use it only for suspicious or recently changed drivers, not for every driver at once. Create a restore point, select a narrow test scope, and know how to return to Safe Mode and clear verification if booting becomes difficult.
Which troubleshooting route should I choose?
The most useful decision factors are where the code appeared, what changed first, whether the issue reproduces in Safe Mode, what the logs identify, and how reversible the proposed change is.
| Observed situation | First route | Why | Risk control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application or API message names a path or object | Inspect the object’s ACL and application log | The status value describes unexpected ACL information | Back up the ACL and edit only the named object |
| Message began after a permission or policy change | Reverse that specific change | Timing provides a testable cause | Keep the original setting and an ACL export |
| Recurring stop screen or restart | Capture the complete bug check, then use Safe Mode and Device Manager | The code alone may be unrelated to the stop condition | Use restore points before driver or system changes |
| Crash persists after updates and hardware checks | Configure a dump and analyze it with WinDbg | Multiple dumps can reveal a repeatable module or pattern | Use Driver Verifier narrowly and prepare Safe Mode recovery |
What mistakes should I avoid?
- Do not treat the number as a diagnosis. The code does not name the file, folder, registry key, service, or driver.
- Do not reset every permission. A wholesale replacement can remove intended inheritance and service access.
- Do not confuse ownership with an ACL. Taking ownership changes who controls an object; it does not automatically recreate the permissions an application needs.
- Do not delete event logs before saving them. The full message, timestamp, and account often contain the only clue to the affected object.
- Do not enable Driver Verifier indiscriminately. It can create additional crashes and make recovery harder.
- Do not install a generic driver or registry utility as a first response. Match any driver change to the named device and use a manufacturer-supported release.
What do Microsoft’s stop-code figures imply?
Microsoft’s current stop-code guidance presents an analysis in which 70% of stop errors are attributed to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware issues, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% to unknown causes. These are Microsoft’s published aggregate figures, not a probability calculation for an individual 0x000002A5 event. They support checking recently changed drivers and hardware, but they do not justify blaming a driver without a complete bug check and supporting evidence.
What should I send to technical support?
Provide the full original message or photograph of the stop screen, the exact date and time, Windows edition and build, application or device name, recent changes, Event Viewer export, ACL inspection output, and any dump files. Explain whether Safe Mode is stable, whether another account reproduces the application error, and which reversible steps you already tried. Redact passwords, private file contents, and personal identifiers while leaving paths, account types, error text, and module names intact.
If you prefer an optional shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address a range of common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while also offering cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks. Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can changing the owner of a folder fix 0x000002A5?
Usually not. Ownership determines which account can change an object’s security settings, while the ACL determines access entries presented to the application. Changing ownership without understanding the required entries can create a second permissions problem.
Could an ACL error change or delete my files?
An ACL controls access; it does not itself rewrite file contents. However, an incorrect repair can deny your account access or grant access to an unintended account, so make a backup and export the original ACL before editing.
Why does the error appear for one Windows account but not another?
Different accounts can receive different inherited or explicit permission entries, profile settings, and application data paths. Compare the affected object and the two accounts’ access rather than copying the working account’s permissions wholesale.

What if Windows cannot stay running long enough to collect logs?
