- Identify the operation. Note whether the message appeared while checking for or installing a Windows update, installing or upgrading Windows, or using a particular app or handling a file.
- Record what happened immediately beforehand. For example, note the update or setup action, the app operation, and the file or archive involved if one was involved.
- Keep the exact error text. If it appeared in an app, include the app’s name and the operation you were performing when contacting that app’s support.
- Choose the troubleshooting path that matches the location. The code’s general definition is not enough to pick a specific repair.
How do I fix it if it appeared during Windows Update?
Use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting route first. Microsoft’s guidance directs Windows 11 users to the Get Help app; it also describes a Settings route and the corresponding troubleshooting route for Windows 10.
- On Windows 11, open Get Help and run the Windows Update troubleshooter, following its prompts.

What if the error appeared during Windows installation or upgrade?
Follow Microsoft’s installation and upgrade troubleshooting guidance rather than applying Windows Update steps automatically. Setup and upgrade failures have a separate support route, and the code’s compression description does not prove which setup component or input triggered the message.
- Note which operation failed: installing Windows, upgrading an existing installation, or another setup action. Keep the exact wording and any additional error details visible on screen.
- Disconnect nonessential peripherals before retrying, as Microsoft includes this among general installation and upgrade checks.
- Check for device or driver issues as part of the broader setup troubleshooting process. This is a general check, not evidence that a driver caused this particular code.

What if it appeared in an app or while handling a file?
If Windows Update and Windows setup were not involved, focus on the app or file operation that displayed the message. Microsoft’s short definition points to an unsupported compression format, but it does not publish a universal app-level repair recipe for this code.
- Identify the app and the exact action. Note whether you were opening, creating, extracting, importing, or exporting something.
- Check the app’s documentation or support for the compression formats it supports and the correct way to handle the specific input or output.
- Confirm that the file or archive is intended for that app and operation. If the app’s instructions do not resolve the issue, provide its support team with the full message, the operation, and the relevant file-format details.
This path is a practical inference from Microsoft’s description of the error, not an official Microsoft procedure specific to an individual app.

Is 0x0000026A a blue-screen stop code?
No. The code discussed here is listed as a Windows error code for an unsupported compression format; that does not make it a blue-screen stop code. Use stop-code troubleshooting only if the computer actually crashed or restarted and displayed a stop-code screen.

Not necessarily. The code description refers to an unsupported compression format, but it does not identify a ZIP file—or any particular file type—as the cause. Check the app’s supported formats and the exact operation before deciding the file is damaged.
Is it safe to keep using Windows after seeing 0x0000026A?
The code definition alone does not establish that Windows is damaged or that the PC is unsafe to use. If a specific update or installation failed, address that operation; if the message appeared in one app, investigate that app and its input.
Will running SFC or DISM fix error 0x0000026A?
