What should I record before trying a fix?
Documentation prevents a useful clue from disappearing after a restart or rollback. Record these items in a text file or photograph them:

How do I troubleshoot 0x00000247 during Windows Setup or an upgrade?
If the code appears while installing or upgrading Windows, use the general installation guidance rather than a code-specific recipe. These checks are diagnostic starting points, not confirmed fixes for 0x00000247.
1. Remove nonessential external devices
Shut down and disconnect USB storage, docks, printers, cameras, card readers, and other peripherals that are not required for the installation. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and the installation media or device that Setup needs. Retry once. If the installation succeeds, reconnect devices one at a time after Windows is stable so that a recurrence can be associated with a specific device.
2. Check Device Manager for visible errors
In the running Windows installation, right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand categories and look for a warning icon or a device listed as unknown. Open the device’s Properties and read the Device status message and code. Record the hardware identity before disabling or uninstalling anything. 4. Check the installation drive for errors
Use Windows’ built-in disk-checking tools on the target volume, following Microsoft’s current instructions for your version. Ensure the drive has adequate free space and that important files are backed up first. Disk checks can take time and may request a restart; allow them to finish rather than powering off during the scan.
5. Repair Windows system files
From an elevated Windows Terminal or Command Prompt, use Microsoft’s documented system-file repair procedure for your Windows version. Run the commands exactly as documented, wait for each operation to complete, restart, and attempt Setup again. If the repair reports that files could not be fixed, save the result and include it when requesting support instead of repeating random repair commands.
6. Retry with a clean record of the failure
Start the upgrade again only after recording the phase at which it failed and any new message. If it fails at the same point, the repeated phase, device status, disk result, and system-file result give support personnel more useful evidence than the code alone.
Why does 0x00000247 appear when Windows Update runs?

Capture the stop-screen details
Photograph the entire screen, including the stop-code label, any named module, and the percentage or restart message. After Windows restarts, note whether the failure repeats under a particular workload. If the machine stays running, open Event Viewer and review entries recorded at the failure time; preserve the event details rather than copying only the hexadecimal value.
Install current Windows updates
Use Windows Update normally when the system is stable enough to do so. A current update can contain a correction for a known driver or system component, but installing updates does not prove that 0x00000247 was caused by an outdated file. Check Device Manager for warning icons and review drivers installed immediately before the first crash. If a specific driver was just updated, use the device’s Properties and the available rollback option only when Windows offers one and you have recorded the current state. Obtain replacement drivers from the device manufacturer or Windows Update, and avoid unofficial driver packages.
Check firmware and hardware diagnostics
Confirm that the computer manufacturer has no applicable BIOS or firmware update, and follow its instructions exactly if one is available. Run the hardware and memory diagnostics supplied by the manufacturer or Windows. Verify free disk space

For a hardware connection, inspect Device Manager immediately after reproducing the failure and record any newly created warning entry. For an application, note whether the failure affects one account or every account and whether it began after an application, Windows, or driver change.
