Error 0x000000DD is a Windows blue-screen parameter for DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION (bug check 0xC4). It means a kernel driver was unloaded without first calling the Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) cleanup routine EtwUnregister. The code identifies a driver-lifecycle failure, not a specific manufacturer, virus or defective part.
Start by recording the stop-screen details, undoing the latest hardware or driver change, and using Safe Mode if Windows is unstable. Then install current Windows, firmware and manufacturer drivers, run memory and hardware checks, and collect a memory dump if the crash returns. WinDbg and, only when necessary, Driver Verifier can identify the offending module for vendor support.

What does stop code 0x000000DD mean?
Microsoft places 0x000000DD under bug check 0xC4, named DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION. The specific violation is an attempt to unload a driver without calling EtwUnregister after registering with ETW. In Microsoft’s wording: “An attempt was made to unload a driver without calling EtwUnregister.”
This happens in kernel mode, where drivers manage hardware and low-level Windows services. The four parameters shown with the violation identify the address passed to EtwRegister, the unloading driver’s starting address and, on Windows 8 and later, the ETW registration handle. Those values help a debugger locate the bad component; they do not name a vendor by themselves.

Therefore, 0x000000DD is not a normal application error and is not proof that a device is physically broken. A driver name on the blue screen, a dump file, or a recent software or hardware change is needed to determine which component is responsible.
What usually causes 0x000000DD?
The immediate cause is faulty cleanup in a kernel driver. In practice, the driver may be supplied by a hardware manufacturer, bundled with a utility or security product, or left behind after an update or removal. A damaged Windows installation, unstable memory or another fault can also corrupt the evidence and make the apparent module misleading.

What should I record before changing anything?
Capture evidence while the stop screen is visible. It often provides the most useful clue before a repair changes the system state.
- Write down the complete code, including the leading zeros, and the exact text
DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATIONif shown. - Record any named
.sysfile, driver, service or module and take a photo if the computer restarts quickly. - Note whether the crash occurs during boot, when connecting a device, when waking from sleep, during shutdown or while running a particular program.
- List hardware, drivers, firmware, utilities and security software installed or updated immediately before the first crash.
- Note whether Windows 11 or Windows 10 can still start normally, and whether more than one device is affected.
Microsoft notes that stop errors can come from hardware, its driver or other software. The module displayed on the screen indicates what was executing at the time, but it is not conclusive until a dump or repeatable test confirms it.

How do I fix 0x000000DD when Windows still starts?
1. Undo the most recent change
Disconnect a newly added USB device, expansion card, dock or other hardware and restart. If the crashes began after a driver or service installation, roll that driver back or uninstall the related software from Settings → Apps → Installed apps or Device Manager. Restart after each change so you can tell which action altered the behavior.
If the suspect device is essential, download its replacement driver before removing the current one and keep a way to reconnect the computer to the internet. Use the manufacturer’s support page rather than a random driver repository.
2. Enter Safe Mode for cleanup
Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers and services, so a defective third-party component is less likely to load. From a working desktop, hold Shift while selecting Power → Restart, then choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart. Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
If Windows cannot stay running, interrupt startup by turning the computer off during the spinning-logo phase two or three times. Windows should enter the Recovery Environment, where the same Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings path is available. In Safe Mode, remove or roll back the suspect driver, disable its related service, and uninstall a recently added utility. Restart normally and test before making another change.
3. Install current Windows, firmware and device drivers
Open Settings → Windows Update, select Check for updates, install all available cumulative updates and restart. Then check the computer or device manufacturer’s support page for a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 driver and any BIOS/UEFI firmware update intended for your exact model.

If the stop screen or dump names a vendor driver, look for a newer release from that vendor. When no update exists, Microsoft’s guidance is to disable the related service while you contact the vendor. Do not substitute a driver meant for a different model, architecture or Windows edition.
4. Check Windows files, memory and hardware
Run the built-in checks after the system is stable enough to complete them. Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and execute:
sfc /scannowAllow the scan to finish and follow any repair message. You can also use the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool by pressing Win + R, entering mdsched.exe, and choosing a restart-and-test option. For storage or device-specific diagnostics, use the tests supplied by the computer or hardware manufacturer.
Run a malware scan with your installed security software, because malicious or damaged components can destabilize drivers. Keep roughly 10–15% of the system drive free where applicable; Windows needs working space for updates, paging and dump creation. If a diagnostic reports errors, repair or replace the affected hardware before repeatedly testing drivers.

How do I configure a memory dump for recurring 0x000000DD crashes?
A dump preserves kernel memory at the time of the blue screen and gives a vendor something concrete to analyze. Configure it before the next crash:

sysdm.cpl, and press Enter. - Open the Advanced tab and select Settings in Startup and Recovery.
- Under Write debugging information, choose Automatic memory dump.
- Confirm that the system-drive path is available, keep Automatically restart enabled or disabled according to whether you need to read the stop screen, and select OK.
Complete memory dumps are normally written to %SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP. Small dumps are normally stored in %SystemRoot%Minidump. A dump can be large, so ensure the system drive has sufficient free space and copy the file before sending it to a vendor or deleting it.
How do I analyze the dump in WinDbg?
Open the relevant dump in WinDbg and run:
!analyze -vThis produces a verbose bug-check analysis that may identify a driver, call stack and the four 0x000000DD parameters. Microsoft also documents !analyze -show 0xDD for displaying the available information for this code. Treat a named module as a lead, not an automatic verdict: corrupted memory can point at a component that was only present when the failure surfaced.
Compare the debugger result with your change history and with the stop-screen timing. If both identify the same vendor driver, provide the vendor with the dump, the exact Windows edition and build, the driver version, and the steps that reproduce the crash. Avoid uploading dumps publicly because they can contain system information and memory contents.
Should I use Driver Verifier for 0x000000DD?
Driver Verifier is an advanced diagnostic, not a first repair step. It places additional checks on selected drivers and can consume significant CPU or deliberately trigger more crashes. Use it only when ordinary rollback, updates and diagnostics have not isolated the problem.
- Open Driver Verifier from the Start menu or by running
verifieras administrator. - Create settings that target only the suspicious, non-Microsoft driver or a very small group. Do not verify every driver at once.
- Restart and reproduce the failure. Collect the resulting dump and inspect it with
!analyze -v. - If Windows cannot boot, return to Safe Mode and run
verifier /resetfrom an elevated Command Prompt, then restart normally.
Microsoft specifically warns that Verifier can cause additional crashes and recommends Safe Mode to disable it when it prevents normal startup. Keep a record of the settings you changed so you can return the system to its prior state.
Which troubleshooting step should I choose next?
Use the least disruptive action that can produce useful evidence. This matrix keeps the decision tied to boot status, recent changes and the presence of a named module.

What if 0x000000DD keeps returning?
Stop experimenting once you have a reproducible dump and a likely module. Save copies of the dump files, record the driver and firmware versions, and contact the device or software vendor. Include the exact stop code, Windows edition, hardware model, recent changes, reproduction steps and the results of memory or hardware diagnostics.
If no vendor component is identified and dumps are inconsistent, prioritize hardware testing and storage health. A clean Windows installation is a last resort after backing up personal data and confirming that the underlying hardware and firmware are stable; reinstalling without identifying a failing device can make the same driver problem return.

It can change how firmware and device drivers interact, so note whether the first crash followed a firmware update. Use only firmware intended for the exact computer model and follow the manufacturer’s recovery instructions if the update itself causes instability.
