Error 0x000000A8 is not a confirmed, named Windows 11 or Windows 10 stop code in Microsoft’s public bug-check references. Treat it as an unverified transcription until you check the exact blue-screen text, Event Viewer record, or crash dump. A frequent mistake is reading the documented 0xA stop code as 0xA8, but they are not interchangeable.
Start by recording the complete message and any named .sys module, then install Windows, driver, BIOS and firmware updates, undo recent changes, test memory and hardware, check the disk and Windows system files, and only then consider the advanced Driver Verifier tool. Microsoft also publishes a broad analysis in which stop errors are divided into 70%, 10%, 5% and 15% portions. The page does not state a publication year in the material available here, so those proportions are context rather than a current probability for your computer.
Is 0x000000A8 the same as 0xA or IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL?
No. Microsoft documents 0xA (also written 0x0000000A) as IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. You should not silently change 0x000000A8 to 0xA; first confirm what Windows actually recorded.

How do I confirm the exact error before changing Windows?
Do this before uninstalling software or replacing hardware. A precise record gives support staff and later diagnostics something to compare.
- Capture the blue screen. Photograph the entire screen or copy the text. Record the stop-code wording, the hexadecimal value, any named
.sysmodule, and the time the computer restarted. - Check Event Viewer. Look for entries at the same time as the restart and note whether the same code, module, storage error, driver error or system-file error appears.
- Review any crash dump. Preserve the dump file rather than deleting it. Compare its stop value and module name with the blue-screen and Event Viewer records.
- Write down what changed. Note recent Windows updates, optional driver updates, BIOS or firmware work, newly installed services, antivirus or backup software, connected devices, and hardware changes.
Microsoft notes that a stop screen may show both the code and the module executing when the failure occurred. A module name is a clue, not automatic proof: the named driver can be the component that exposed a fault elsewhere.
What should I update first on Windows 11 or 10?
Current software and firmware are among Microsoft’s first checks for unexpected restarts. Install updates in a controlled order and restart when Windows requests it.

- Run Windows Update. Open Settings, choose Windows Update, install available updates, and restart. Review optional driver updates when they are relevant to the affected device.
- Check the manufacturer’s driver page. If Windows Update offers no remedy, obtain the current driver from the PC or component manufacturer. Match the package to your exact Windows edition and hardware model.
- Update BIOS/UEFI and firmware only by the manufacturer’s procedure. Read the supplied instructions, keep the computer on reliable power, and do not interrupt the update. Firmware changes are not a substitute for confirming the stop value.
- Re-test after each meaningful change. If the crash returns, the time line tells you whether the update altered the symptom.
How do I undo a recent change or isolate a driver?
If the restarts began after a driver, service, device, antivirus, backup tool or hardware change, reverse that change before making several unrelated modifications.
Roll back or remove the suspected item
- Uninstall a recently added application or service using its normal Windows removal path.
- For a recently changed device driver, use Device Manager to inspect the device, then roll back or uninstall the driver when that option is available. Reboot and observe whether the same failure returns.
- Disconnect newly added hardware temporarily. If the system becomes stable, reconnect one item at a time so the change associated with the restart is identifiable.
Use Safe Mode when normal startup crashes
Start Windows in Safe Mode and disable or uninstall the suspect item there if the crash occurs during startup. Safe Mode loads a limited environment, so stability in that mode makes a startup driver, service or other third-party component more plausible; instability in Safe Mode keeps hardware, core Windows code and corruption high on the list.
Do not remove several drivers or services at once. Changing one candidate at a time preserves the evidence needed to identify the cause and to restore the previous configuration if the symptom changes.
How can I test memory and other hardware?
Hardware checks are important because Microsoft lists a hardware device and its driver among common causes of an unexpected restart.
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic
Use Windows Memory Diagnostic to test system memory, then allow the computer to restart and complete the test. Record the result and the date. A failed result supports a memory or related hardware investigation; a passing result does not prove every component is healthy.

Run the PC maker’s hardware diagnostics
Use the diagnostics supplied by the computer manufacturer for memory and other components. Follow the vendor’s instructions and preserve any failure identifier. A vendor-specific result is more useful to support than a general statement that the machine “seems fine.”
Inspect Device Manager and Event Viewer
In Device Manager, look for warning icons and record the device name and driver version. In Event Viewer, compare hardware, storage, driver and system errors with the exact restart time. Matching timestamps and a repeated module are stronger clues than a one-off warning elsewhere in the log.
How do I check the disk and repair Windows system files?
File-system errors and corrupted Windows components can prevent normal operation or prevent a crash from being analyzed. Use the built-in disk-check utility for file-system errors, then run System File Checker.
- Run the Windows disk-check utility. Start the utility from Windows and follow its instruction about checking the system drive and restarting if an offline check is required. Keep the result with your other diagnostic notes.
- Run System File Checker. Open an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run
sfc /scannow. Let the scan finish, then record whether it repaired files or reported that no integrity violations were found. - Keep free space available. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping approximately 10%–15% of the system drive free so Windows has room for swap and dump files. Check the drive before repeating tests or collecting another dump.
A clean file scan does not rule out a defective driver or physical hardware. Conversely, a repair result does not establish that the repaired file caused the stop; use the restart time and module information to connect results to the incident.
Should I use Driver Verifier for 0x000000A8?
Driver Verifier is an advanced isolation tool, not a first-line repair. Microsoft warns that it can consume substantial CPU, slow Windows, and cause additional crashes.

If ordinary updates, rollback, hardware tests and file checks have not identified a cause, use Driver Verifier only to test suspicious or recently changed third-party drivers. Do not enable verification for every driver at once: broad verification increases the chance of instability and makes the resulting evidence harder to interpret.
Before enabling it, preserve your dump files and write down the drivers you intend to test. If verification causes a boot loop or repeated crashes, return to Safe Mode and disable the verification settings, then restore the last known working driver configuration. Escalate to the device manufacturer or Microsoft support if you cannot safely return to normal startup.

These comparisons are more dependable than treating the unverified hexadecimal value as a diagnosis. If different crashes name different modules, broaden the investigation to memory, storage, firmware and Windows corruption instead of repeatedly reinstalling one driver.

Escalate with evidence rather than only reporting “Windows crashed.” Give the device manufacturer or Microsoft support:
