EppManifest.dll errors are usually repaired by fixing Windows component files, not by downloading a replacement DLL. First note the exact message, the file path shown, your Windows version and build, and the program that triggers the warning. If the path points into Windows Defender or another Windows-protected location, Microsoft’s supported sequence is to run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth from an administrator Command Prompt and then run sfc /scannow. If a specific older endpoint-protection application produces the error, repair or reinstall that application through its official support route instead.
EppManifest.dll has historical links to Windows Defender, Forefront Endpoint Protection and System Center Endpoint Protection. Those records do not prove one universal file path or identical behavior on every current Windows release, so the path and product named in your own error determine the correct branch.

What is EppManifest.dll?
EppManifest.dll is a Windows dynamic-link library (DLL) name historically associated with Microsoft endpoint-protection software. Microsoft Q&A material has shown it in a Windows Defender path and as a Defender icon resource, while an archived Microsoft knowledge-base table lists the file for Forefront Endpoint Protection and System Center Endpoint Protection. A third-party metadata listing describes it as a user-interface customization resource module, but that description is secondary and is not a Microsoft technical specification.
Because those references cover different products and years, they do not establish a single current location, a complete technical role, or a requirement that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation contain the file. An error can therefore mean that a protected Windows component is damaged, an older security product was incompletely removed, or a particular application is looking for a file from its own installation.

Why does Windows say EppManifest.dll is missing or not found?
The wording and timing of the message provide the first useful clue. A warning that appears during Windows startup or while Windows Security opens points toward a Windows or Defender component. A dialog that appears only when one older program starts points toward that program’s installation or compatibility state.
- Protected-file corruption: interrupted updates, disk errors or other system-file damage can leave a component incomplete.
- Legacy endpoint software: Forefront Endpoint Protection and System Center Endpoint Protection used this filename in historical packages. A partially removed or outdated installation can continue to request it.
- Version mismatch: replacing a file from another Windows build or product package can leave dependent files mismatched even if the error disappears temporarily.
- Incorrect path or registration: an application may be calling a location that no longer exists after an upgrade or uninstall.
- Malware or unwanted software: a fake alert can use a familiar DLL name. Treat an unexpected path or unsigned file as a security investigation, not as proof that Windows itself is missing a file.
Is EppManifest.dll safe, and should I download it?
The filename alone cannot establish safety. A legitimate copy should belong to the Windows or endpoint-protection installation that requested it, and its location, file properties and digital signature should make sense for that product and release. The historical association with Microsoft security software is not evidence that every file carrying this name is genuine.

Check the path before changing anything
- Write down the complete path displayed in the message. If the dialog shows only the filename, use the application name and event details to identify which program requested it.
- In File Explorer, enable file-name extensions if necessary, then inspect any existing
EppManifest.dll. Open Properties and review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs. An absent signature is not by itself proof of malware, but an unexpected publisher or location deserves caution. - Record the Windows edition and build by opening Settings > System > About. Also record whether the message appears before sign-in, when Windows Security opens, or only after a named application starts.
- If the warning began after an uninstall, update or system restore, note that event. It can distinguish a legacy application problem from general Windows corruption.
How do I repair EppManifest.dll with DISM and SFC?
For a file that appears to be part of Windows or Windows Defender, use Microsoft’s system-file workflow in this order: DISM first, then System File Checker (SFC). The commands repair the component store and protected files; they do not guarantee that every application-specific EppManifest.dll message will be resolved.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt. Select Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. The title bar should indicate an administrator session. - Run DISM. Enter the command exactly as shown and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthDISM examines the running Windows image and repairs its component store. Allow it to reach completion; closing the window during the scan can leave the repair unfinished.
- Run SFC after DISM completes. At the same administrator prompt, enter:
sfc /scannowWait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC checks protected operating-system files and replaces damaged copies with versions from the repaired component store when possible.
- Restart and retest. Reboot if Windows requests it, then repeat the action that produced the EppManifest.dll message. If the error was triggered by a particular program, launch that program only after the restart so you can tell whether the repair changed its behavior.
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. Keep the computer connected to the internet and make sure Windows Update is not disabled by policy while the command runs. If Windows Update is unavailable, Microsoft’s guidance describes specifying an alternate repair source that matches the installed Windows edition, language and architecture; using an unrelated image can make the repair fail or introduce mismatched components.
What does each SFC result mean?
The final SFC message determines the next action. Read the result in the Command Prompt instead of assuming that a completed progress bar means the DLL problem is fixed.

| SFC result | Meaning | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. | SFC found no corruption in the protected files it checked. | Retest the triggering application. If the message remains, investigate its installation, path and compatibility rather than repeatedly running SFC. |
| Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. | One or more protected files were replaced. | Restart if needed and test again. Keep the exact error details in case the application still needs its own repair. |
| Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. | Repairable files remain unresolved. | Review the CBS log entries identified by Microsoft’s SFC guidance, note the component names, and follow the component-specific repair or Windows recovery instructions. |
| Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation. | SFC could not complete its check. | Record the complete message. Check that Command Prompt was elevated, rerun DISM if it did not finish, and use Microsoft’s troubleshooting path for the reported condition rather than deleting or replacing DLLs. |
Where is the CBS log?
SFC records detailed servicing information in %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Open the file with an administrator-capable text editor and search for [SR] entries around the time of the scan. The log can be large; preserve a copy before making changes and use the component names in those entries to choose the next repair step.
What if DISM fails or Windows Update cannot supply repair files?
A DISM failure is not a reason to fetch EppManifest.dll from a download site. First record the exact DISM error and percentage at which it stopped. Commonly, the online image cannot obtain a matching source, Windows Update is unavailable, or the servicing store has damage that needs a more specific recovery path.
- Confirm that the Command Prompt was opened with Run as administrator.
- Check that the device can reach Windows Update and that no organization policy is blocking it.
- Verify the Windows edition, language and architecture before selecting an alternate repair source.
- Use Microsoft’s documented DISM source procedure with installation media or another matching source when Windows Update cannot be used. Do not point DISM at a random ISO or a different release.
- After a successful DISM repair, run
sfc /scannowagain and interpret the final result.
If the component-store repair still fails, retain the DISM and CBS logs and move to Microsoft’s Windows recovery guidance for the exact error. A reset, in-place repair or other recovery option can have data and application consequences, so back up personal files and confirm which option preserves installed programs before proceeding.

What if only one older application reports the error?
When the warning appears only as a named program starts, treat that program as the primary suspect. The historical Forefront and System Center Endpoint Protection references are especially relevant if the computer still has an old enterprise endpoint package, an incomplete uninstall, or remnants from a migration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Error appears during startup, Windows Security use, or general Windows activity; path is under a Windows-protected location. | Windows component or protected-file issue. | Complete the elevated DISM-then-SFC sequence, restart, and reassess. |
| Error appears only when a specific legacy endpoint product starts; the dialog names that product or its folder. | Product installation or compatibility issue. | Use the product’s official support, update or reinstall route for the exact edition. Do not assume current Defender instructions repair that legacy package. |
| Error appears after an application was removed or upgraded and the path is in that application’s folder. | Incomplete application installation or uninstall. | Use Windows Apps settings or the application’s official installer to repair or remove it, then restart and test. |
| Error points to a temporary, user-profile or unknown directory. | Potentially unwanted or malicious software, or a bad application reference. | Do not execute or replace the file. Run your installed security software’s normal scan, review recently installed programs and investigate the requesting process. |
An archived knowledge-base table records Eppmanifest.dll version 4.10.209.0, size 174,792 bytes, dated 15-Nov-2016, for Forefront Endpoint Protection and System Center Endpoint Protection. Those values describe historical packages only; they are not a current Windows specification and should not be used to select a replacement download.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I verify that the repair worked?
Verification should reproduce the original condition, not merely confirm that a command completed. Restart Windows, perform the same sign-in, Windows Security action or application launch that raised the message, and check whether the exact dialog returns. If it does, capture the full text, path, Windows build, product name and the final DISM/SFC results before trying another branch.

What should I avoid when fixing this error?
- Do not download EppManifest.dll from an unofficial DLL repository.
- Do not overwrite a system folder with a file copied from another computer.
- Do not delete registry entries or Defender folders merely because a forum post mentions the same filename.
- Do not assume the 2016 endpoint-product metadata applies to your current Windows build.
- Do not disable security software permanently to suppress the dialog; identify which product requested the file and repair that product through an official channel.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I copy EppManifest.dll from another Windows computer?
That is unsafe as a general fix. The other computer may use a different build, architecture, language or endpoint-product version, so the copied file can be incompatible even when the filename matches. Repair the installed component or reinstall the exact application instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will DISM and SFC delete my personal files?
The commands target Windows component and protected system files; they are not designed to remove documents, photos or other personal data. Backups are still sensible before any later recovery operation, because reset or reinstall choices have different data and application effects.
Why does the error return after SFC says it repaired files?
A returning message can indicate that an application still references a removed legacy component, that another update replaced the file set, or that the requesting program has its own damaged installation. Compare the path and trigger with the original details and repair that specific product rather than repeating DLL downloads.
How do I know whether my PC still has Forefront or System Center Endpoint Protection?
Look in Settings or Control Panel’s installed-app list for the product name, and check the error’s folder path and startup entries. Because those products are historical, current support and removal procedures depend on the exact edition and Windows version; use the product owner’s official documentation for that installation.
