If DISM reports 0x80070057 while running RestoreHealth, first verify that you are using an elevated Command Prompt and the exact Microsoft command. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, allow it to finish, and then run sfc /scannow. The code means “The parameter is incorrect,” but that label does not identify one DISM-specific cause. If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, provide a valid Windows repair source with /Source and, when appropriate, /LimitAccess; then inspect the CBS log for the detail behind the failure.
The title uses “ox80070057” with the letter “o.” Windows documentation writes the hexadecimal code with a zero: 0x80070057. The commands and explanations below use the conventional spelling.

Microsoft defines 0x80070057 as ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER, or “The parameter is incorrect.” That is an error-code definition, not a diagnosis of one particular typo, damaged file, or Windows component. The same code appears in Microsoft material about Windows Update and upgrade or installation failures, so the code alone cannot tell you why a specific DISM run stopped.
DISM repairs a Windows image. In the normal desktop repair workflow, /Online tells DISM to work on the currently running Windows installation, while /Cleanup-image selects component-store servicing and /Restorehealth asks DISM to detect and repair corruption. DISM normally obtains replacement files through Windows Update. When that source is unavailable or cannot provide the required files, the repair needs another valid Windows source.

Because the code is generic, start with the command, the Windows context, and the log details rather than applying a random code-specific “fix.” A command copied with a missing slash, an invalid source path, or a repair source that does not contain usable Windows files can all require different next steps.
What should I check before running the repair?
Use the supported sequence on the Windows installation that needs repair. These checks prevent you from troubleshooting a command that was launched in the wrong context.

- Open Command Prompt with administrator permissions. A non-elevated window may not have the rights required to service the image.
- Use the conventional code spelling,
0x80070057, when searching logs or documenting the failure. The letter “o” in the title is a typographical variation, not a different code. - Copy the command exactly, including the leading hyphens in each option and the space between options.
- Keep the Command Prompt window open while DISM runs. Microsoft notes that the operation may take several minutes.
- Record the exact command and whether the target is the currently running Windows installation. Those details matter when interpreting a log or asking for further support.
How do I run the standard DISM and SFC sequence?
Microsoft’s documented order is DISM first and System File Checker second. DISM repairs the component store and supplies files that SFC can use when it checks protected system files.
1. Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open the Windows search box and type Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
- Confirm that the window is an administrator Command Prompt before continuing.
2. Run RestoreHealth against the online image
Enter this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Press Enter and wait for DISM to complete. Do not close the window merely because progress appears to pause; Microsoft says the operation can take several minutes. The standard command asks Windows Update for the files needed to complete the repair.
3. Run System File Checker after DISM finishes
If DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
Leave the Command Prompt open until SFC reaches 100 percent. SFC checks protected system files after the component-store repair has run, so reversing the order removes the benefit of the normal Microsoft workflow.
4. Treat the result as evidence, not a diagnosis
A successful DISM run followed by SFC completing its scan indicates that the supported repair sequence ran to completion. If DISM again displays 0x80070057, do not assume that the command itself is necessarily misspelled. Move to the repair-source checks and log review below, using the exact command and context as your starting evidence.

The online command relies on Windows Update as its repair source. If the Windows Update client is broken, unavailable, or unable to supply the files DISM needs, Microsoft documents using valid Windows files from a running installation, a network location, or removable media.

Use an alternate source and block Windows Update for that run
Microsoft’s example is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual location of valid Windows repair files. The example path is not a universal folder that exists on every computer. If the path is wrong or does not contain usable Windows files, DISM cannot repair the image from it.
/Source tells DISM where to look for repair files. /LimitAccess prevents DISM from contacting Windows Update as a source for that command. Use the switch when you deliberately want the operation to rely on the supplied local, network, or removable source instead of falling back to Windows Update.
Choose the source route that matches what you have
| Route | Command pattern | How files are obtained | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default online repair | DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth |
Windows Update | Windows Update can provide the required repair files. |
| Alternate local, network, or removable source | DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<valid path> /LimitAccess |
The location supplied after /Source |
Windows Update cannot provide the files, or you need DISM to use a specific source. |
The official guidance supports removable media such as a Windows DVD as one possible source location. You do not need to buy a USB drive to run the ordinary online command. A flash drive is only an optional container for a valid repair source; blank media by itself does not provide Windows repair files.
Validate the path before retrying
- Confirm that the drive, network share, or folder is available to the computer running DISM.
- Check every character in the path, including the drive letter, backslashes, and folder name.
- Make sure the location contains Windows files suitable for repairing the image, not merely an empty folder or unrelated installation files.
- Use the exact source path in the command and retain
/LimitAccesswhen Windows Update should not be consulted.
Microsoft’s published material does not provide one universal compatibility checklist covering every Windows version, edition, language, and image file. Therefore, do not assume that any installation media is automatically an appropriate source. The source must contain valid Windows repair files for the image you are servicing.
How do I investigate the failure when the commands still fail?
When the supported sequence does not complete, the next useful step is to inspect the logs instead of repeating the same command blindly.
Check the CBS log
Microsoft’s Windows Update corruption guidance identifies the Component-Based Servicing log at:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
This file records issues that Windows found or fixed during servicing. Open it after the failed run and look around entries created at the time of the attempt. Capture the relevant error text, the command you ran, and whether you used the default or alternate source. Those details are more informative than the code by itself.

Keep the scope of the evidence clear
The CBS log can show a specific missing or damaged component, a source-related failure, or another servicing condition. It does not turn every 0x80070057 report into the same problem. Microsoft’s available guidance does not prescribe one universal resolution for every report carrying this code.
DISM also has logging capabilities, and Microsoft documents DISM servicing options for online and offline images. The repair workflow here focuses on the currently running installation and the CBS log emphasized in Windows Update repair guidance. If you are servicing an offline image, identify that image and its source explicitly before choosing commands; do not substitute the online command for an offline target.
Which common mistakes can produce another 0x80070057 failure?
Use this checklist to separate command-entry problems from source and servicing problems.
The window is not elevated
Close the existing window and reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator. Then rerun the standard command. Keep the original error text so you can compare the elevated attempt with the first one.
The command was altered while copying
Compare your entry character by character with:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Pay particular attention to the leading slash on each option, the hyphen in /Cleanup-image, and the absence of extra punctuation. If you add a source, compare the complete path and the placement of /LimitAccess with the documented pattern.
The alternate source is only a path, not a repair source
A folder named “RepairSource” is not enough. The location must contain valid Windows files. Recheck the drive or share, confirm that it is accessible, and use the path after /Source: without replacing it with a guessed location.
Windows Update was expected to work but was intentionally bypassed
/LimitAccess stops DISM from using Windows Update for that run. If you supplied the switch without a working source, the command has no usable repair location. Either correct the source or return to the default online command when Windows Update is available.

The code was treated as a complete diagnosis
ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER describes the reported status. It does not prove that one specific parameter is wrong, nor does it establish one kind of component-store corruption. Use the command context and CBS entries to narrow the cause.
How is this code related to Windows Update and installation errors?
Microsoft lists 0x80070057 in general Windows Update installation-failure guidance and in upgrade and installation troubleshooting. Those pages provide context for the same code, but they do not establish that every DISM occurrence has the same cause or requires the same remedy.
| Context | What the Microsoft description establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| DISM servicing | The code maps to ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER; use the command, source, and logs to investigate. |
A single DISM-specific root cause. |
| Windows Update | The code is associated with some update installation failures. | That an update failure and a DISM failure are identical incidents. |
| Upgrade or installation | The code is labeled “The parameter is incorrect” in general upgrade and installation help. | That upgrade guidance alone identifies the cause of a RestoreHealth failure. |
This distinction matters when searching for help. Match the remedy to the operation that failed: DISM servicing, Windows Update installation, or an upgrade process. Do not import an unrelated procedure solely because the hexadecimal code looks familiar.
Can DISM repair an offline Windows image?
Yes. Microsoft documents DISM as a tool for servicing both online and offline Windows images. The command in this guide uses /Online because it targets the Windows installation that is currently running; an offline repair requires identifying the mounted or otherwise specified image and selecting options appropriate to that target.
The same principles still apply: use valid repair files, distinguish the target image from the running environment, and consult servicing logs when a command fails. Do not point an online command at an offline image or assume that a source path valid for one image is suitable for another.

Let SFC finish after DISM reports success, then note the commands and outcomes in your troubleshooting record. If the original problem returns, capture the new error text and the relevant CBS-log entries instead of relying on memory of the first run.
If the standard command succeeds but a later attempt with an alternate source fails, the difference in source and switches is significant evidence. Conversely, if both routes fail in the same way, the log and the exact Windows context become more important than trying additional variations of the spelling.

The practical decision is straightforward: start with the Microsoft online sequence, move to a verified alternate source only when Windows Update cannot provide repair files, and use the CBS log to identify the condition that remains. FAQ
Is 0x80070057 used only by DISM?
No. Microsoft also lists the code in Windows Update and upgrade or installation troubleshooting. Those references explain why the code may appear in different Windows operations, but they do not make the underlying incidents interchangeable.
How current is Microsoft’s DISM source-option documentation?
The Microsoft Learn page covering DISM image repair and the /Source and /LimitAccess options shows a last-updated date of December 15, 2021. The syntax remains the documented reference for the workflow described here, while source suitability still depends on the Windows image you are servicing.
Does adding /LimitAccess disable every network connection?
No. The documented effect is narrower: it prevents DISM from using Windows Update as a repair source for that command. It does not, by itself, describe a system-wide network block.
What information should I include when asking for help?
Include the exact command, whether Command Prompt was elevated, whether you used /Source or /LimitAccess, the Windows context (online or offline), and the relevant CBS-log error lines. That information lets someone distinguish a source problem from a command or servicing problem instead of guessing from the hexadecimal code alone.
