If a Diablo IV War Plan is not updating, first verify the selected plan, read its exact objective, and complete the activities in the displayed order. Then make sure the reward screen finishes without a disconnect, that the character is in the same Seasonal/Eternal, Hardcore/Non-Hardcore, and Normal/SSF partition as the progress you expect, and that the game is fully patched. Blizzard has confirmed real War Plans progression and reward-registration bugs, so a correctly completed run can still fail to advance; document the failure instead of repeatedly spending time or reset resources on the same activity.
What are War Plans supposed to track?
War Plans are ordered endgame playlists. You select up to five activities from six modes: The Pit, Infernal Hordes, Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, Lair Bosses, and Kurast Undercity. The plan then presents a chain and an activity tree through which you earn progression for those endgame activities.

Blizzard describes the feature as: “Setup the activity order for War Plans and play through them seamlessly in a single chain.” That wording explains many apparent failures. Completing a familiar activity is not enough if it is not the active step, if the objective has an additional condition, or if the reward state never registered.
How do I troubleshoot a War Plan that is not updating?
Work through these checks in order. The first three distinguish an invalid run from a display problem; the later checks address reward registration, character partitions, and known software defects.

1. Confirm the active War Plan
Open the War Plans screen and check which plan is selected, not merely which plan is visible in a menu or activity list. A community report described a display-only or “false” plan that appeared stuck while another selected plan was moving. That report is anecdotal, so use it as a reason to verify the selection rather than as an official fix.
Write down the plan name and the current node before starting another run. If the node changes only on a different plan, the issue is selection or display state rather than the activity itself.

2. Read the objective literally
Open the current node and identify every requirement. Depending on the plan, the condition may specify a mode, dungeon type, boss, modifier, wave count, cinder spend, or another completion requirement. A normal completion can be valid gameplay while still failing to satisfy the node.
For example, entering the correct general activity with the wrong dungeon type or stopping before a required wave count will not provide reliable evidence that War Plans are broken. Capture the objective text before you begin so you can compare it with the run you actually completed.
3. Follow the displayed sequence
War Plans are order-sensitive. Blizzard’s FAQ gives the concrete example of a plan that lists Helltide followed by a Nightmare Dungeon: completing the Nightmare Dungeon first does not give credit for that plan’s first step.
Do not substitute an activity simply because it appears elsewhere in the playlist. Check the next required node after every completion, especially when changing between Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, bosses, and Undercity runs.

4. Finish the activity and its reward flow
Stay in the completion and reward sequence long enough for the game to register the result. Do not disconnect, close the client, or leave during reward claiming. Diablo IV patch notes 3.0 specifically identify a progression blocker caused by disconnecting while claiming rewards.
If the activity ends but the reward chest, result screen, or next-node unlock does not appear, treat the run as a possible reward-state failure. Note whether you received the normal activity reward, because a missing reward and an unchanged War Plan node can have the same visible symptom.
5. Check the character’s progress partition
Under the Season of Hell’s Legacy rules, shared progress requires an exact match across three partitions:
- Seasonal or Eternal
- Hardcore or Non-Hardcore
- Normal or Solo Self-Found
A seasonal character is therefore not automatically in the same shared progress group as every other seasonal character. Match all three labels before treating an alt as evidence that progress disappeared.
Reputation and shared progress can carry across characters in the same partition, but the planner used to allocate points remains character-specific. One character can consequently show the expected shared progress while another has a different planner allocation.
6. Update the game client
Install the latest Diablo IV update before repeating content. Blizzard’s patch 3.1 notes list fixes for activities that failed to grant rewards or progress achievements, along with multiple War Plans activity, party, modifier, and teleport issues. A current client does not guarantee recovery of an already-stuck node, but it removes known fixed defects from the diagnosis.

Which War Plans symptom matches your problem?
Use the symptom pattern to decide what to check next. These patterns can look identical in the interface but point to different causes.
| Symptom | First checks | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Activity completed, node unchanged | Selected plan, exact objective, and sequence | Doing the right mode at the wrong point in the chain may not count; Blizzard explicitly documents order-sensitive Nightmare Dungeon credit. |
| Rank or points appear stuck, such as 9/10 | Activity-tree completion, unallocated points, and active-plan display | A community report described 9/10, but that report does not prove that every 9/10 display is a software bug. |
| Reward missing or next activity locked | Whether the reward flow completed and whether a disconnect occurred | Patch 3.0 documents a disconnect-during-reward progression blocker; patch 3.1 documents reward and achievement-credit fixes. |
| Alt character shows different progress | All three partition labels and the character-specific planner | Shared progress depends on Seasonal/Eternal, Hardcore/Non-Hardcore, and Normal/SSF matching exactly. |
| Other activity behavior looks wrong | Client version, party state, modifiers, chests, and teleport behavior | Patch 3.1 lists fixes across these areas, so update before assuming the War Plan objective is the sole cause. |
Why can a completed activity fail to advance the node?
There are three distinct states to separate: the activity can be valid but out of order, the activity can be in order but fail an extra objective condition, or the game can complete the activity without recording its reward and progression state. Repeating the same content without identifying which state occurred does not distinguish them.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallNightmare Dungeon ordering is the clearest documented example. A dungeon completed before the plan’s Helltide step is not retroactively converted into credit for that earlier step. Similar reasoning applies whenever the node names a modifier, boss, wave threshold, or resource-spending condition.
A stale interface is another possibility. Verify the selected plan and compare the node text before and after the run. If the activity reward appears but the node remains unchanged, preserve the evidence rather than assuming the visible number is the entire backend state.
What did Blizzard fix in patches 3.0 and 3.1?
The official patch history confirms that War Plans tracking failures have existed as real software defects, not just player misunderstandings.
- Patch 3.0: Blizzard identified a case in which War Plan progression could be blocked when a player disconnected while claiming rewards.
- Patch 3.1: Blizzard fixed an issue where War Plans activities did not correctly grant rewards or progress achievements.
- Patch 3.1: The same notes list fixes for incorrect chests, modifiers persisting after an activity, party-completion experience, Infernal Hordes entry and voting, Nightmare Dungeon seasonal-affix behavior, and several activity-specific interactions.
These notes justify updating the client before deeper troubleshooting. They do not establish that every current stuck-plan report has one cause, nor do they provide a universal method for restoring every account-specific progression state.

What should I check when a War Plan is stuck at 9/10?
A 9/10 display is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First verify that every activity tree required by the plan is actually complete, that no points remain unallocated, and that the displayed plan is the one selected for play.
Then compare the activity list with the node sequence and objective text. A community report of 9/10 does not establish that all such displays are bugs, so avoid declaring the plan permanently blocked until those checks and the reward-state check are complete.
What should I do if an alt does not show the same War Plan progress?
Compare the characters’ partition labels rather than their season alone. Seasonal/Eternal status, Hardcore/Non-Hardcore status, and Normal/SSF status must all match for shared progress under the stated rules.
Also distinguish shared reputation from planner allocation. Matching characters may share reputation and progress while still presenting separate planners with different point allocations. That difference is expected and is not, by itself, evidence of lost progress.

If the node still does not move after the checks above, create a precise record while the failure is reproducible. Include:
- Platform and launcher
- Season, character name and class, and the character’s partition labels
- The exact War Plan sequence and current objective text
- Activity name, difficulty, party or solo status, and completion time
- Whether the game disconnected, crashed, or was closed during reward claiming
- Screenshots or video showing the objective before and after completion
- Whether the activity reward appeared and whether the next node unlocked
- Client version at the time of the run
This record separates an ordering mistake from a reward-registration failure and gives support enough context to investigate an account-specific state.

Which suggested fixes are not guaranteed?
Players may suggest creating an alt, abandoning a plan, resetting a dungeon, or repeating an activity. These can be diagnostic experiments, but none is presented in the documented material as a universal recovery procedure. Abandoning or resetting can also consume reset resources or alter the plan you are trying to diagnose.
Use such suggestions only after recording the original state, and do not describe a successful anecdotal workaround as an official fix. The safest escalation is to preserve the objective, sequence, reward, and partition evidence and report the exact failure.

What is the practical next step?
Before another run, confirm the selected plan, copy the current objective, and follow its sequence exactly. Complete the activity and reward flow without disconnecting, verify that the character belongs to the expected partition, and update Diablo IV. If the node remains unchanged, stop spending time on blind repeats and submit the captured details; Blizzard’s patch history shows that reward and progression defects can be genuine, while no single recovery procedure covers every stuck War Plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do War Plans use all six endgame activities in one chain?
No. A plan can contain up to five activities selected from the six available modes, so an omitted mode is not evidence that the playlist failed to load. The exact chain depends on the plan you selected.
Can changing the world tier force a stuck War Plan to update?
There is no documented Blizzard recovery step that uses a world-tier change to repair War Plans progression. Keep the difficulty and other conditions aligned with the node’s stated objective, and record any change as part of the troubleshooting history.
Are War Plans problems limited to one platform?
The documented material does not establish a platform-specific failure pattern. Include the platform and launcher in a report so an account or client investigation can distinguish platform context from plan-order or reward-state errors.

Will reinstalling Diablo IV restore missing War Plan credit?
No universal reinstall-based recovery procedure is documented for account-specific War Plan failures. Updating to the current patch is supported by the patch history; reinstalling should not replace collecting the sequence, objective, reward, and disconnect details.
