Start with the HTTP status and Claude’s error body: a 429 can be a temporary rate limit or a spend cap that will not clear by retrying; a 529 means the API is temporarily overloaded; and a 504 means request processing timed out. Check response headers—especially retry-after—before retrying, and use streaming or Message Batches for long-running work. These steps apply to the direct Claude API; managed Claude endpoints on AWS or Google Cloud can have provider-specific quotas and error behavior.

How do I tell which Claude API problem I have?

Use the response status, error body, and headers together. The same symptom—such as a failed request—can have different causes, and a retry that helps a temporary throttle will not fix an exhausted spend cap or an unsuitable long-running request pattern.

Response What it indicates First action
429 rate_limit_error A rate limit, usage-tier spend cap, or certain Claude Code workspace spend limits have been reached. Inspect the error details and retry-after header before deciding whether to wait or address account limits.
529 overloaded_error The API is temporarily overloaded. Retry as a transient failure with bounded backoff; honor retry-after if present.
504 timeout_error Request processing timed out. For long-running work, consider streaming or Message Batches; check whether an intermediary closed an idle connection.

Capture the HTTP status, error type, message, any details, relevant headers, and request ID. The error body may include a request_id; responses also carry a unique request-id header. Preserve that identifier if you need to contact Anthropic support. In application code, catch the SDK’s typed exception classes rather than branching on message text, which can change.

Why am I getting a 429 from the Claude API?

A 429 is not always a short-lived throttle. Anthropic documents it for organization rate limits, monthly usage-tier spend caps, and certain Claude Code workspace spend limits. Check whether the response includes retry-after and inspect the error details before retrying.

When the 429 is a rate limit

Rate limits apply to requests per minute (RPM), input tokens per minute (ITPM), and output tokens per minute (OTPM). A workload can exceed one dimension even when its average request count looks acceptable. Limits use a continuously replenished token bucket, so a short burst can hit a limit before an average-per-minute calculation suggests a problem.

For example, a service may stay below its hourly average while releasing a large queue of requests in a few seconds. The token bucket can be depleted by that burst, producing a 429 even though a dashboard showing only a broad per-minute average looks healthy. Measure traffic in short intervals as well as longer windows.

  1. Read the response’s retry-after value, if present, and wait that many seconds before retrying. Anthropic’s guidance says retries before that time will fail.
  2. Inspect the response’s rate-limit headers for the applicable limit, remaining capacity, and reset information. This helps distinguish request pressure from input- or output-token pressure.
  3. Compare your traffic with the current organization limits shown in the Console. Check RPM, ITPM, and OTPM separately; the Console’s values are authoritative for your organization and deployment.
  4. Smooth bursts with a queue or rate limiter. As an application design choice, schedule eligible retries with jitter so that many waiting requests do not resume at once.
  5. Check whether several workers, serverless instances, or separate applications share the same organization capacity. A single process may look compliant while the combined workload is not.

Do not assume a published usage-tier value is a universal entitlement: Anthropic says standard maxima can differ, including for evaluation accounts, and limits may change. Use the live Console and current rate-limit documentation rather than relying on a copied quota figure.

When the 429 is a spend cap

A tier spend-cap 429 behaves differently from a rate throttle. Anthropic says it has no retry-after header, and retries—including automatic SDK retries—continue to fail until access resumes. For Messages API responses, inspect error.details.error_code for enforced_spend_limit_reached.

Check billing and usage in the Anthropic Console, then use the available Console path to request a higher tier or limit if appropriate. A custom spend limit can instead produce HTTP 400, so do not use status alone to conclude that every spending-limit problem is a 429.

Because a spend cap is an account condition, changing concurrency, adding jitter, or waiting for a normal rate-limit reset does not solve it. Stop automatic retries for this subtype and return a clear operational error to the caller, otherwise every worker can generate needless failed traffic and noisy logs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which limit should I address?

Match the remedy to the constrained resource rather than simply lowering all traffic:

  • RPM pressure: smooth request bursts, limit concurrent submissions, and drain queues at a controlled rate.
  • ITPM pressure: reduce repeated input where practical. Reconsider unnecessarily large context windows, duplicate instructions, and fan-out jobs that send the same prompt repeatedly. Caching can affect input treatment for most models, so check the current rate-limit documentation for your model.
  • OTPM pressure: constrain generated output and avoid sending more simultaneous generation work than the account can sustain. A prompt that asks for unnecessarily long responses can consume output capacity faster than expected.
  • Spend-cap pressure: review account usage and limits; waiting for a rate-limit reset or retrying more slowly does not resolve an enforced spend cap.

How should a client handle a 429?

Separate classification from retry scheduling. First parse the body and headers; only then decide whether the request belongs in a delayed queue, should fail immediately, or requires an account change.

For a normal rate-limit response with retry-after, place the work in a queue and make it eligible after the specified interval. If multiple workers receive the same interval, add a small amount of application-level jitter around that eligibility time so they do not recreate the same burst. Keep a maximum attempt count or total retry window. A bounded policy prevents a persistent outage from consuming all worker capacity.

For a response that identifies enforced_spend_limit_reached, do not schedule repeated attempts. Mark the account or workload as blocked, alert an operator, and direct the operator to Console billing and usage controls. If the body lacks enough detail to classify the response, retain it for inspection instead of assuming it is transient.

Remember that an official SDK can already retry transient failures. If your application also retries, count both layers. Otherwise, two SDK retries followed by three application retries can produce many more attempts than the application’s configuration appears to allow.

What does overloaded_error 529 mean?

A 529 overloaded_error means the API is temporarily overloaded. Anthropic’s wording is, “The API is temporarily overloaded.” Treat this as a transient service-side failure, not proof that your request exceeded a usage-tier quota.

Retry with bounded exponential backoff and honor retry-after if the response supplies it. Do not hard-code a universal delay: Anthropic’s error guidance does not establish one fixed 529 wait time. A retry budget matters—if attempts continue failing, stop retrying indefinitely and surface the failure for application-level handling.

Backoff should be coordinated with your queue and concurrency controls. Retrying every failed request at once can turn a temporary overload into another synchronized spike. Keep user-facing requests responsive by returning an explicit temporary-unavailability result when the retry budget is exhausted, while allowing background jobs to remain queued for a later attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Anthropic’s SDK documentation describes automatic retries for transient failures, including connection failures, rate limits, and server-side 5xx errors. The documented default is two retries, and max_retries is configurable. Exact behavior can depend on the language SDK and version, so verify the one your application uses. An SDK’s automatic retry policy does not make a spend-cap 429 recoverable.

How do I stop Claude API requests from timing out?

A 504 timeout_error indicates that request processing timed out. For long-running work—particularly requests expected to take more than ten minutes—Anthropic recommends Messages streaming or Message Batches. Also check whether a network intermediary closes an idle connection before the API responds.

First determine whether Anthropic returned a 504 or whether your own HTTP client, reverse proxy, load balancer, or platform terminated the connection. A client-side timeout can leave no Claude error body at all. Log the elapsed time, the component that closed the connection, and whether any response headers arrived. If Anthropic returned a status, preserve its body and request ID; if an intermediary closed the connection, inspect that intermediary’s idle and overall request limits.

Choose streaming when the caller needs incremental output

Streaming lets a client receive incremental events instead of waiting on one long idle connection for a complete response. It can be a better fit when a user or calling service needs progress or partial output while generation continues. It does not guarantee that the request will finish successfully, and it does not remove the need to handle errors during a stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Streaming is most useful when the consumer can process events as they arrive—for example, displaying generated text progressively or forwarding progress to another component. Make sure the consumer handles an interrupted stream and records the request ID and the last observed event context for diagnosis. Do not treat the arrival of a few events as proof that the final message will be complete.

The official SDK validates that non-streaming Messages requests are not expected to exceed ten minutes and configures TCP keep-alive. Direct API integrations may also benefit from TCP socket keep-alive in networks where idle connections are closed. Keep-alive can reduce that particular connection risk; it is not a remedy for every processing timeout.

Choose Message Batches when the caller need not hold a connection open

For work that can run asynchronously, Message Batches let you submit work and poll for its result rather than requiring one uninterrupted network connection. This suits jobs where immediate incremental output is unnecessary and the client can check back later.

Batches are a better architectural fit for offline evaluation, document processing, and other jobs that can tolerate delayed completion. The submitting process can record the batch identifier, release its network connection, and poll later. Build polling into a bounded workflow rather than keeping a request thread blocked, and retain enough metadata to associate each completed result with its original job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Approach Useful when Connection pattern Main trade-off
Messages streaming You need incremental events while a long request runs. The client receives events during an open stream. The caller must maintain and monitor the stream and handle mid-stream failures.
Message Batches The work can be handled asynchronously and polled later. The caller does not need to keep one connection open for the full job. Results are not delivered incrementally; the workflow must store job state and poll.
Non-streaming Messages The response is expected to complete within the normal processing window. One request remains open until the complete response arrives. Long or idle requests are more exposed to processing and intermediary timeouts.

What should I check before changing retries or timeouts?

Use the response evidence to diagnose first, then change the part of the system responsible for the observed limit or connection behavior.

  1. Record the response. Capture status, error type, message, any details, and response headers. Avoid logging only a human-readable message.
  2. Classify a 429. Check for retry-after, rate-limit headers, and enforced_spend_limit_reached. A 429 with a wait instruction calls for waiting; a spend-cap response calls for account-level action.
  3. Compare actual traffic with live limits. Review organization-specific RPM, ITPM, and OTPM in the Console, and identify whether short bursts, input volume, or output volume is the pressure point.
  4. Review the request’s duration and connection path. For requests expected to run a long time, decide whether streaming or batch processing fits better. If the failure has no response from Anthropic, investigate whether a proxy or other intermediary closed an idle connection.
  5. Keep the request ID. Save the request-id response header or the error body’s request_id for support follow-up. Use typed SDK exceptions to separate error classes without relying on message-string matching.
  6. Inspect both retry layers. Document the SDK’s configured max_retries and your own retry policy, then calculate the maximum possible attempts and total delay.
  7. Test the smallest reproducible request. Compare a normal request with the failing workload to determine whether the pressure comes from concurrency, input size, output size, or duration. Keep the same model and organization when making the comparison.

How should logging and alerts distinguish these failures?

Use structured fields rather than one generic “Claude failed” message. Record status, error type, error code when present, retry-after, rate-limit information, request ID, model, approximate input and output sizes, elapsed time, and the component that ended the connection. Redact prompt and response content according to your data policy while retaining enough metadata to correlate a job.

Alert differently for a sudden 529 spike, repeated 429s with a retry window, and a 429 containing an enforced spend code. A 529 alert indicates service pressure and should show retry success rates. A rate-limit alert should show which of RPM, ITPM, or OTPM is being exhausted. A spend-cap alert should route to billing or account owners rather than the on-call engineer responsible for queue tuning. For 504s, compare server responses with client-side disconnects so that a proxy configuration problem is not mistaken for an Anthropic processing failure.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Why can retrying make a rate-limit problem worse?

Retries add traffic. If a client immediately resubmits work after a rate-limit response, it may send more requests before capacity has reset; synchronized clients can also create another burst. Follow the supplied retry-after value, bound the number of attempts, and queue or smooth work that does not need to run immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep separate handling for throttling and account limits. The SDK may retry transient failures automatically, but an enforced spend cap remains in effect until access resumes or the applicable limit changes. If you add application-level retries on top of SDK retries, account for both layers so that the total number of attempts remains bounded.

Do not “fix” a 429 by simply increasing every timeout. A longer client timeout does not add RPM, ITPM, or OTPM capacity, and it cannot remove an account spend cap. Likewise, reducing output length will not solve an RPM-only limit. Change the control that corresponds to the evidence in the response.

Do these steps apply to Claude on AWS or Google Cloud?

This guide describes the direct Claude API behavior in Anthropic’s documentation. Claude endpoints managed through AWS or Google Cloud can have provider-specific quota, routing, and error behavior, so inspect the relevant provider’s status and quota guidance rather than assuming the direct API’s headers or retry semantics apply unchanged.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Receive a failure and preserve evidence. Save the status, body, headers, elapsed time, and request ID before any retry logic alters the record.
  2. Check for 429. If retry-after and rate-limit headers describe temporary capacity, delay and smooth the retry. If enforced_spend_limit_reached appears or no retry window is supplied, investigate billing and usage instead of looping.
  3. Check for 529. Apply bounded backoff, honor any supplied retry-after value, and stop after the configured retry budget.
  4. Check for 504 or a client disconnect. Determine whether processing exceeded the normal window or an intermediary closed an idle connection. Move long interactive work to streaming and asynchronous work to Message Batches where appropriate.
  5. Review account and deployment context. Confirm the live Console limits for the organization and remember that a managed AWS or Google Cloud endpoint may expose different controls.
  6. Escalate with identifiers. If the behavior persists, provide Anthropic support with request IDs, timestamps, statuses, error details, and relevant headers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Claude API 400 spend-limit error mean?

Anthropic documents that a custom spend limit can produce HTTP 400 rather than 429. Read the returned error body and review the account’s billing and usage settings instead of treating every spending-related failure as a rate throttle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can cached input reduce Claude API rate-limit pressure?

Anthropic says cached input receives different treatment for most models, but the exact effect depends on the model and current rules. Check the live rate-limit documentation for the model you use before estimating how caching changes your input-token capacity.

What information should I include when reporting a Claude API failure?

Include the request ID, HTTP status, error type, message, relevant details, headers, and approximate time of the failed call. Anthropic identifies request IDs as useful when contacting support.

Do Claude API rate limits stay the same across usage tiers?

No. Anthropic describes published figures as standard maxima that can differ, including for evaluation accounts, and says organization limits are visible in the Console. Use the live account values for capacity planning.

Should I retry every 429 response?

No. A rate-limit 429 with a retry-after value is intended for a delayed retry, but a spend-cap response can continue failing, including through automatic SDK retries. Inspect the body and headers first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a universal delay for a 529 overloaded_error?

No fixed delay is established. Use bounded exponential backoff, honor retry-after when supplied, and configure a retry budget rather than hard-coding one wait that is assumed to fit every incident.

Will streaming prevent Claude API timeouts?

Streaming can deliver incremental events and reduce the risk of an idle connection during a long request, but it does not guarantee successful completion. You still need to handle stream interruptions and processing errors.

When should I use Message Batches instead of streaming?

Use Message Batches when the job can run asynchronously and the caller does not need incremental output. Submit the work, store its identifier, and poll for results instead of holding one network connection open for the entire operation.

Can increasing my HTTP timeout fix a 429 or spend cap?

No. Client timeout settings do not increase RPM, ITPM, or OTPM capacity and cannot remove an account spending limit. Match the change to the status, headers, and error details you received.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Diagnose Claude failures from the status, body, and headers instead of retrying blindly. Wait on a genuine rate-limit 429, address an enforced spend cap in the Console, back off a transient 529, and redesign long-running 504-prone calls with streaming or Message Batches. Keep request IDs and typed exceptions throughout so each incident has an actionable trail.
