If an “AI” washing machine is overdosing detergent, leaving clothes dirty, or showing a full AutoDose tank that does not clean well, the fix is usually a dosing-path or setting problem—not a failed artificial-intelligence system. First determine whether the cycle is drawing from an automatic tank, the manual drawer, or a pod placed in the drum. Then verify that the product is compatible, enter the detergent concentration and base dose, and adjust for water hardness, load size, and soil level. Clean any congealed detergent from the tank, drawer, hoses, and inlet before recalibrating. If correct settings and cleaning do not restore operation, the pump, water inlet, sensor, or dispenser may need model-specific service.

What does “AI washing machine” mean for detergent dosing?

“AI washing machine” is a consumer label rather than a single technical standard. Depending on the model, it can mean weight and turbidity sensors, automatic detergent and softener dosing, connected controls, or adaptive cycle selection. The exact behavior, menu names, compatible products, and dose ranges are model-specific.

LG describes ezDispense as sensing laundry weight and dispensing liquid detergent and softener. Samsung exposes dose-per-wash and concentration controls. AEG and Electrolux describe preset dosing that must be matched to detergent type and local water hardness. Miele’s TwinDos guidance combines the detergent maker’s quantity with water hardness and soil level. Treat those systems as different implementations: never copy a dose value from another brand or model.

Before changing anything, locate the owner’s manual for the exact model and note whether the current program supports AutoDose. A tank can be full yet unusable if the cycle is set to manual dosing, the product has separated or hardened, the detergent and softener are in the wrong compartments, or the pump cannot draw liquid.

How do I identify which detergent path the washer is using?

Look at the selected cycle and the dispenser before adding detergent. Most problems begin when two paths are active at once or when the machine is drawing from a different compartment than expected.

  1. Automatic tank: The cycle is configured to draw liquid detergent (and, on models with a second tank, softener) from a reservoir. The machine meters a dose based on its stored settings and sensor readings.
  2. Manual drawer: You add detergent to the marked main-wash compartment for that load. If AutoDose remains enabled, some AEG models can dispense from both the tank and the manual compartment, producing an overdose.
  3. Pod in the drum: A detergent pod is placed inside the empty drum before clothing. It is not poured into an AutoDose tank or a drawer compartment unless the model manual explicitly says otherwise.

Run one controlled test load after identifying the path: use a normal load size, select the intended program, and add detergent only where that path requires it. Photograph or note the menu state first so you can undo a change that makes results worse.

Why is my smart washer using too much detergent?

Excess foam, detergent film, stiff fabric, poor rinsing, or weak spin performance usually indicates an excessive dose, an overly concentrated product, or residue in the dosing system. Miele states that too much detergent creates foam that prevents laundry from moving freely, reducing washing, cleaning, and spin performance.

Check for double dosing

Confirm that AutoDose is either on with an empty manual compartment or off when you are measuring detergent yourself. AEG warns that leaving AutoDose on while filling the manual compartment can release detergent from both places. The same principle applies when a pod is added to a cycle that is also drawing from a tank.

Match the product to the tank

Many automatic systems are designed for compatible liquid detergent. LG cautions against putting powdered, ultra-concentrated, gel-type, or clumped products in its ezDispense tanks. AEG and Electrolux likewise say not to put powder or pods in their AutoDose tanks. Use the manual drawer or drum only in the way the model’s instructions specify.

Correct concentration and base dose

Samsung provides separate dose-per-wash and concentration controls; a very concentrated detergent may need a lower volume setting. Enter the concentration printed on the detergent label or select the closest supported value, then set the base dose recommended for the load and soil level. Do not compensate for a concentrated product by simply selecting a larger volume.

Reduce in measured increments

Miele advises following the detergent maker’s quantity, considering water hardness and soil level, and reducing the amount in stages when overdosing is suspected. Change one variable at a time, run a comparable load, and inspect rinsing and fabric feel. A sudden large reduction can create underdosing that is harder to diagnose.

Why are clothes still dirty when the AutoDose tank is full?

A full reservoir proves only that detergent is present; it does not prove that the selected cycle is using that tank or that the pump can move the detergent. Poor cleaning can result from an incorrect basic dosage, a product mismatch, insufficient water flow, or a load and soil level that exceed the selected settings.

Verify the cycle and tank assignment

Check the cycle’s detergent option and the machine’s tank indicators. Some programs support AutoDose while others expect manual detergent. Confirm that detergent is in the detergent tank and softener is in the softener tank. LG says an accidental swap requires emptying, thoroughly cleaning, and refilling the dispenser before normal use.

Recheck load, soil, hardness, and concentration

Before increasing dose, verify four inputs:

  • Load size: Overloading restricts mechanical action and leaves less room for detergent solution to circulate.
  • Soil level: Heavily soiled items may need the washer’s higher-soil option or a pre-treatment step permitted by the garment label.
  • Water hardness: Hard water can require a higher detergent quantity than soft water. Enter the local hardness value if the washer asks for it.
  • Detergent concentration: A concentrated liquid needs a different volume from a standard formulation. Make sure the concentration setting matches the bottle.

BSH identifies an incorrect basic dosage as a cause of insufficient cleaning. Increase the dose only after these checks, and do so by the smallest available setting step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect for a blocked or hardened dosing route

Detergent left in a drawer, tank, or hose can block the next dose. LG lists excess detergent, low water flow, hardened powder, and residue buildup as common reasons detergent remains in the dispenser. A tank that appears full may contain congealed product around the pickup point, so the pump draws little or none.

Can I use pods or powder in an automatic detergent dispenser?

Usually no. AutoDose tanks commonly require a compatible liquid detergent, while pods belong in the drum and powder belongs in the manual drawer when the model supports it. Follow the exact manual because tank designs and approved formulations differ.

Product or setting Supported use described by manufacturers What to do
Liquid detergent in an AutoDose tank LG ezDispense and AEG/Electrolux AutoDose guidance describe liquid products for the tank. Use only a compatible liquid and enter its concentration or base dose where the washer asks.
Powder detergent LG cautions against powder in ezDispense tanks; AEG/Electrolux say not to put powder in AutoDose tanks. Use the manual drawer if the model allows powder, and switch AutoDose off for that load.
Pods AEG/Electrolux say not to put pods in AutoDose tanks. Place the pod in the empty drum only when the manual permits it; disable automatic detergent dosing.
Ultra-concentrated or gel-type liquid LG cautions against ultra-concentrated and gel-type products in ezDispense tanks. Check the model’s compatibility list before filling; do not dilute or mix products unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs you to.

Never pour powder or a pod into a liquid tank to “use it up.” Undissolved material can block the pump and lines, and a mixed tank makes later dose calculations unreliable.

How do I reset or clean the detergent dispenser?

Cleaning is a physical process, not just a software reset. Drain the reservoir, remove residue from the drawer and lines, refill with one compatible product, and then restore the correct dose settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop the cycle and isolate the dispenser. Cancel the program and follow the manual’s instructions for removing or draining the tank. Keep detergent away from eyes and skin and ventilate the area.
  2. Empty both liquid tanks. If detergent and softener were swapped, empty both rather than trying to dilute the mistake with fresh product.
  3. Wash removable parts. Rinse the drawer, siphon caps, tank openings, and seals with warm water. Remove hardened or congealed detergent mechanically with a soft brush; do not force a sharp object into a pump inlet.
  4. Flush the lines as directed. BSH recommends a drain-clean-refill sequence for residue and congealed product. Use the model’s cleaning or priming program if provided, and use only the cleaning agent and quantity the manual permits.
  5. Refill with one compatible product. Do not combine brands or formulations in the same tank. Close the cap fully so the pump can prime.
  6. Restore settings. Re-enter detergent concentration, base dose, water hardness, and any soil-level preference. A reset that clears stored values can return the washer to a factory dose that does not suit your detergent.
  7. Run a maintenance or test cycle. Miele recommends checking TwinDos dispensing quantity, cleaning deposits, cleaning the drain filter, and running a maintenance wash when deposits or poor performance persist.

If the tank still does not empty, the dispenser leaks, or the machine reports a dosing error after cleaning and priming, stop repeated test cycles. A blocked pump, failed sensor, or water-inlet problem may require service.

How should I adjust detergent for water hardness and soil level?

Use the detergent maker’s recommended quantity as the starting point, then apply the washer’s concentration and hardness settings. AEG says preset dosage may need adjustment for water hardness and detergent type. Miele likewise says to consider hardness and soil level.

For soft water or lightly soiled loads

Stay near the lower end of the detergent maker’s range, provided garments are rinsing clean and no grey film develops. Avoid lowering the dose solely because the tank appears to dispense frequently; the machine may be adapting to load weight.

For hard water or heavily soiled loads

Use the hardness and soil settings rather than making an untracked manual increase. If cleaning remains poor, raise the dose one step and compare a similar load. Hard-water minerals can combine with too little detergent over time; Miele warns that underdosing can leave laundry grey and stiff because of limescale.

For concentrated liquids

Enter the product’s concentration exactly as the washer’s menu defines it. A high-concentration liquid generally requires less volume than a standard liquid, but the correct value depends on the detergent label and model scale.

What do suds, stiff fabric, or grey laundry indicate?

Use the symptom to choose the next check instead of changing every setting at once.

Symptom Most likely checks Next action
Heavy suds, detergent film, stiff fabric, or poor rinsing Excess dose, wrong concentration, double dosing, or buildup. Disable one dosing path, verify concentration, clean the system, then reduce the dose gradually.
Poor cleaning or laundry becoming grey and stiff Too little detergent, a dose below the detergent maker’s recommendation, hard water, or excessive soil. Verify hardness, soil level, load size, and basic dose; increase one setting step only if those inputs are correct.
Detergent remains in the drawer Low water flow, hardened product, excess detergent, or residue. Clean the drawer and inlet, confirm water supply, and use a compatible product.
No suds after a refill Detergent and softener may be in the wrong tanks, or the pump may not be primed. Empty and thoroughly clean swapped tanks, refill correctly, and run the model’s priming or test procedure.

Suds are not a reliable measure of cleaning power. High-foam results can indicate that the chemistry and dose are wrong for the washer, while low visible foam can still be normal for a high-efficiency cycle.

When should I call for washer service?

Use the model-specific service guide or an authorized repair channel when cleaning, correct product selection, and calibration do not restore dosing. Escalate if any of these conditions remains:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The tank level does not change during a confirmed AutoDose cycle.
  • The dispenser leaks, repeatedly reports an error, or dispenses detergent when AutoDose is disabled.
  • Water flow into the drawer remains weak after the household supply and inlet screen are checked.
  • A pump, sensor, or valve makes abnormal noise or fails the manufacturer’s test program.
  • Detergent congeals again immediately after a correct drain-and-clean procedure.

Give the technician the exact model number, detergent name and concentration, water-hardness setting, selected cycle, and the steps already completed. Do not assume another brand’s dose values, cleaning chemicals, or disassembly instructions apply.

What should I record while troubleshooting?

A short log prevents repeated adjustments and makes service faster. For each test load, record:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix two liquid detergents in the same AutoDose tank?

Do not mix them unless the washer and both detergent makers explicitly allow it. Different viscosities or ingredients can separate, gel, or alter the concentration calculation; drain and clean the tank before changing products.

Does a full detergent tank mean the pump is working?

No. The level sensor can show a full reservoir even when a cycle is using manual dosing, the pickup opening is blocked, or the pump cannot prime. Confirm tank-level movement during a supported AutoDose cycle rather than relying on the display alone.

How can I tell whether my water is hard enough to change the dose?

Use the hardness value supplied by your water utility or a test strip, then enter that value in the washer if the menu provides a hardness setting. Avoid guessing from soap suds, because foam also depends on detergent formulation and temperature.

Should I run an empty hot cycle after cleaning the dispenser?

Only use a maintenance or cleaning program specified by your model’s manual. An ordinary hot cycle may not flush the dosing lines, and an unsuitable cleaner can damage seals or create dangerous fumes.

The Bottom Line

Fix dosing in this order: identify the active path, use a compatible product, match concentration and water hardness, clean and prime the dispenser, then make small dose changes. Persistent errors after those steps point to a pump, sensor, valve, or dispenser fault that needs model-specific service.
