Fix AI video problems by making the input clearer, simplifying the shot, shortening the clip, and changing one variable at a time. For character drift, approve a still reference before animating and use reusable character references or a storyboard workflow when available. For bad lip-sync, start with readable, well-lit footage, manageable dialogue, and a face that stays mostly toward the camera. No single setting removes every artifact: results depend on the model, version, reference, motion, and duration.

Why do AI video artifacts happen?

AI video models predict plausible images while trying to keep subjects and motion coherent from frame to frame. They can produce a convincing sequence overall while losing consistency in a detail: fingers multiply, facial features shift, text changes, or reflections stop matching the scene. The longer or more complicated the requested motion, the more chances there are for that illusion to slip.

Faces and hands draw particular scrutiny. In a 2026 perceptual study, Runway had 1,043 participants each judge 20 five-second clips. Overall detection accuracy was 57.1%, and about 9.5% of participants were reliable detectors. Detection was higher for faces, hands, and human action (58–65%) and below chance for animals and architecture (45–47%). These results describe that study, not a universal artifact rate or a guarantee that viewers will miss flaws in a particular video.

Input quality also matters. Runway warns that blurry hands or faces in an image may become more noticeable after it is transformed into video. A generation can amplify a defect already present in the reference rather than repair it.

What should I check first when an AI video looks wrong?

Start by locating the first frame or moment where the result breaks down, then trace the problem back to the source, motion, or generation settings. A brief inspection before rerunning can save time: changing a prompt will not reliably fix a face that was already blurred in the reference.

  1. Inspect the reference. Look closely at faces, hands, edges, fine details, lighting, and compression. Replace an image or clip that is blurry, dark, compressed, or already distorted.
  2. Look for conflicting visual cues. Motion blur, dust, reflections, visible text, and other details can imply motion or scene behavior different from the prompt. Runway notes that an input image establishes composition, subject matter, lighting, and style, and that motion implied by the image can conflict with the requested motion.
  3. Identify the failure type. Is the issue identity drift, a deformed detail, flicker, a camera move that changes the composition, or speech that does not match the mouth? Make a specific observation rather than rewriting the whole prompt.
  4. Change one variable on the next attempt. Adjust the reference, prompt, duration, or model separately. If you change several at once, it becomes difficult to tell which change helped.
  5. Check the job inputs if generation failed outright. Verify the format, resolution, aspect ratio, and compatibility between the prompt and reference. Retry with simpler inputs or another model if the failure persists.

How do I fix flicker, warping, extra fingers, or morphing?

Make the shot easier to maintain over time: use a clean reference, ask for one clear action, reduce competing motion, and generate a shorter clip. If the visual defect is already visible in the source image, replace that source before trying to animate it.

Use a clean source image

Choose a well-lit, sharp image with the important subject details plainly visible. Inspect the face and hands at the size they will appear in the finished video. If a feature is indistinct or malformed before generation, animation may intensify rather than resolve it. Also check whether the source contains blur, text, reflections, or other visual signals that could contradict the movement you want.

Ask for one simple action

A character taking a natural step is a more manageable request than a spin, jump, turn, and gesture all at once. Keep the number of moving objects low and use a straightforward camera move. Runway says complex scenes can pull attention away from character features and increase drift. If a complicated scene is essential, split its action into simpler shots rather than asking one generation to preserve everything through a long sequence.

Describe motion, not the existing picture

For image-to-video, the image already supplies much of the appearance and scene information. Use the prompt to specify what changes: the subject’s action, environmental movement, camera movement, timing, direction, and speed. Re-describing visible features can add contradictory instructions instead of improving control.

Use positive, physical descriptions of the desired result. Runway’s Gen-4 guidance says negative phrasing is unsupported and can behave unpredictably. For example, describe a “locked camera” and “minimal subject motion” rather than relying on a list of things the model must not do. Start simply and add detail only when the result shows what is missing.

Shorten the generation

Runway recommends 5–10-second clips for consistency. A shorter generation gives the model less time in which to lose track of a face, hand, object, or scene detail. For a longer finished sequence, consider building it from shorter shots, while checking that the subject remains recognizable between them.

For NVIDIA’s LTX-2.3 guidance, sequences should remain under 257 frames for coherence. Frame count is not a fixed duration: how many seconds 257 frames represent depends on the sequence’s frame rate. NVIDIA recommends 20–30 inference steps while iterating, 40 or more for final-quality renders, and 1280×720 for iteration. These are LTX-2.3 recommendations, not universal settings for other models.

How can I keep the same character consistent between shots?

Establish the character’s appearance in a clear still image before animating, then use reference or storyboard features to carry that identity through later shots. A reference can reduce drift, but it cannot guarantee identical results across every model, motion, or shot.

Approve the identity before adding motion

Use a high-quality, well-lit image where facial features are clear. Generate or select a still, confirm that it has the intended identity, and only then animate it. Runway describes this two-step process as a way to gain more control over the starting frame. If the face is wrong in the approved still, correct the still rather than expecting motion generation to repair the identity.

Let the reference carry appearance

When an image already establishes the character, avoid repeating appearance descriptions that duplicate or contradict it. Keep the motion request focused on the action. Conflicting appearance instructions make it harder to tell whether a change came from the reference or the text.

Use reference angles and reusable identity features

If the generation tool supports multiple reference angles, provide front, profile, and three-quarter views when they are available. Those angles give the model more information about how the same subject looks beyond one fixed view. Runway recommends multiple angles where supported.

Reusable character references can also help. OpenAI’s Sora 2 guide documents character references and says a generation can use up to two uploaded characters. That limit applies to the feature described in that guide, not to every video tool. For multi-shot work, NVIDIA Research’s Video Storyboarding method is designed to preserve recurring-subject identity across shots without fine-tuning.

Keep the action natural and the shot short

Start with a small, readable movement, such as walking forward, rather than a complex combination of a spin and jump. If the identity holds through the simpler shot, add complexity in a later attempt, one change at a time. Short clips are also easier to inspect for the exact point where the face or other defining features begin to drift.

Why is AI lip-sync out of sync, and how do I improve it?

Lip-sync is more fragile when the face is difficult to see, the head turns sharply, the speech is fast or overlapping, or the source is poorly lit or low resolution. Use clear footage, keep the face readable, and fit the dialogue to the clip rather than crowding too many words into a short shot.

Improve face visibility

Runway identifies profile angles, extreme head turns, close-ups, and low-resolution or poorly lit source footage as common weak points. Begin with clean, well-lit footage and a face the viewer can read. Avoid asking for a rapid head turn while the character speaks if the shot can instead keep the face in a clearer orientation.

In close shots, inspect the teeth and tongue as well as the general mouth movement. A mouth that appears to open and close at roughly the right time can still look wrong if those details are visibly distorted.

Fit dialogue to the available time

Match the amount of dialogue to the shot duration. OpenAI’s Sora guide says a four-second shot usually accommodates one or two short exchanges. For scenes with multiple speakers, use concise lines and consistent speaker labels, as the guide recommends. Fast, overlapping speech makes timing and mouth movement harder to judge and was also identified by Runway as a weak point.

Use synthetic speech responsibly

Runway’s AI Lip Sync guidance says to lip-sync only faces and voices you have the right to use, and to disclose synthetic or dubbed media where an audience would expect a genuine recording. Treat permission and disclosure as part of the workflow, not as a final technical check.

Should I use image-to-video, text-to-video, or a character-reference workflow?

Choose based on what must remain stable. Image-to-video is a stronger starting point when the exact identity, framing, or style matters; text-to-video is useful for unconstrained ideation when those details are less important.

Need Better starting point Why
Exact identity, framing, or style Image-to-video The reference image anchors composition, subject matter, lighting, and style.
Fast ideation or unconstrained B-roll Text-to-video Text-only generation offers more creative freedom when exact identity is not the priority.
One character reused across shots Character-reference or storyboard workflow References and identity-preserving methods can reduce drift.
Local generation or enhancement RTX GPU workflow NVIDIA documents RTX inference and Video Super Resolution settings.

When comparing tools for a particular project, check identity control, reference-image support, supported motion complexity, maximum duration, resolution, dialogue timing, lip-sync behavior, iteration speed, and whether processing is local or cloud-based. Those characteristics matter more than a broad claim that a model is “better” at video.

Can an RTX workflow fix generated-video defects?

An NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics card is relevant if you plan to run supported models locally or use RTX Video Super Resolution; it is optional for people using cloud generation. Local inference or enhancement is not a universal fix for incorrect fingers, identity drift, or poor lip-sync.

NVIDIA’s LTX-2.3 guidance gives a useful iteration pattern for that workflow: render at 1280×720 while testing, keep sequences under 257 frames for coherence, and use 20–30 inference steps during iteration. For a final-quality render, NVIDIA recommends 40 or more inference steps. These settings may help structure local-generation experiments, but they do not establish that a particular defect will disappear, and they should not be applied as if they were settings for every model.

Separate generation problems from resolution problems. Enhancement can target how clearly an image is displayed; it does not necessarily correct a character whose face changed or a hand whose shape is wrong across frames. Review the underlying sequence before deciding that higher resolution is the right next step.

How do I run a repeatable repair loop?

Use a controlled loop so each new attempt answers a question. Keep the reference, action, and duration simple until the failure is understood; then add only the detail the shot needs.

  1. Save the failed result and inspect it. Note whether the issue begins in the source or appears during motion, and identify the first moment it becomes visible.
  2. Fix the source if needed. Replace a blurry, dark, compressed, or distorted reference. Check for blur, text, reflections, and other cues that conflict with the planned movement.
  3. Reduce the request. Choose one action, fewer competing objects, and a straightforward camera move. For image-to-video, describe the change rather than restating the image.
  4. Use a shorter clip. Runway recommends 5–10 seconds for consistency. If using LTX-2.3, NVIDIA recommends keeping the sequence below 257 frames.
  5. Make one adjustment and generate again. Change only one of the reference, prompt, duration, or model so the result can show whether that adjustment mattered.
  6. Check inputs if the job itself fails. Confirm supported format, resolution, aspect ratio, and prompt/reference compatibility. Simplify, retry, or switch models if it still fails.
  7. Inspect the specific detail that failed. For character work, check facial identity between shots; for close lip-sync, inspect the mouth, teeth, and tongue; for motion defects, find the first frame where shape or continuity breaks.
  8. Add complexity only after the simpler version works. Introduce another action or camera move separately. If the defect returns, you can identify which added demand made the shot less stable.

Do not assume that a single successful frame means the whole clip is sound. Watch the sequence for continuity, especially around movement and transitions, because AI video problems are often changes over time rather than one static flaw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI video make text stay readable in every frame?

Not reliably. Runway identifies shifting text as an example of a scene-consistency failure, so avoid depending on generated text when exact wording must remain stable; add or verify essential text in a separate production step.

Will upscaling fix extra fingers or a changing face?

Upscaling may affect apparent image detail, but it does not establish that an incorrect shape or identity across frames has been corrected. Inspect the underlying generation and address the source, motion, or reference problem first.

Does every AI video model support multiple character references?

No. Support and limits are tool-specific. OpenAI’s Sora 2 guide documents up to two uploaded characters for its character-reference feature; check the current documentation for the tool and version you use.

Can I use a real person’s face and voice for AI lip-sync?

Only use faces and voices you have the right to use. Runway also advises disclosure for synthetic or dubbed media where an audience would expect a genuine recording.
