A black Surface Pro 3 screen does not automatically mean the tablet is dead. Start by removing every accessory, connect the Surface power supply, and let it charge for at least 15 minutes. If Windows may still be running, connect a keyboard and press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. If the display remains black or the device does not respond, use the Surface Pro 3’s earlier-model restart: hold volume-up + power until the screen turns off, keep holding for at least 15 seconds, release, wait 10 seconds, then press power once.
The sequence below separates a power problem from a display-wake problem and shows when USB recovery or Microsoft service is appropriate. Perform the low-risk checks in order; do not begin with recovery media or repeated hard resets.

Is the Surface Pro 3 completely off, or is Windows running behind a black display?
Use the device’s behavior to choose the first branch. If there is no charging indicator, no response to the power button and no sign that the tablet is awake, concentrate on the outlet, charger, connections and charging time. If the tablet appears powered but the panel stays black, disconnect accessories, try the keyboard display-wake shortcut and then perform the model-specific restart.
A black panel by itself cannot identify the failed component. The checks below are designed to establish whether the Surface can receive power, respond to a wake command, reach its firmware interface or start Windows. Keep notes about what changes after each step; that information is useful if service becomes necessary.

How do I remove accessories that can block startup?
Microsoft advises testing the Surface without attached accessories because an accessory can prevent startup. Shut down whatever you can, then disconnect all of the following before trying the power button again:
- USB drives and other USB accessories
- SD or other storage cards
- External monitors
- The Type Cover
- A Surface Dock or other dock
Leave only the Surface itself and its power supply connected. Press the power button once and watch for any change. If the screen returns after an accessory is removed, reconnect items one at a time after Windows is stable so you can identify which connection triggered the problem.

How do I check the Surface Pro 3 charger and charge level?
Use the power supply designed for the Surface. Confirm that the wall outlet works, that the power supply is firmly connected at every point and that the Surface Connect plug is fully seated. Microsoft’s guidance does not establish a particular wattage or part number for this troubleshooting step, so do not assume that any physically compatible adapter is suitable.
Look at the LED on the Surface Connect plug while it is attached. Microsoft says the indicator should be lit when the charger is connected; an unlit indicator may mean the power supply has a problem. Reseat the connections and try a known-working outlet. If the light remains off, test with a compatible replacement supply rather than repeatedly attempting to start the tablet on an unverified adapter.
Once the connections are secure, leave the Surface charging for at least 15 minutes before trying to start it again. This is a minimum charging interval in Microsoft’s startup guidance, not a guarantee that a device with a failed battery or power circuit will recover. After the interval, press the power button once. If there is still no response, continue with the restart procedure rather than holding the button indefinitely.
How do I wake a Surface Pro 3 whose screen is blank?
If the tablet may be awake, attach a keyboard and press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B together. This is Microsoft’s display-wake shortcut for a blank screen. Keep the keyboard connected while you wait briefly for a response, then check whether the display returns.

This shortcut is preferable to immediately forcing a restart when the system may still contain an open document or other unsaved work. If it produces no visible change, move to the Surface Pro 3 restart procedure below. Do not infer from a silent shortcut attempt alone that the charger or display has failed; the next test establishes whether the device responds to firmware-level controls.
How do I force-restart a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 with a black screen?
Surface Pro 3 uses Microsoft’s earlier-Surface restart instructions. Follow the timing closely:
- Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the same time.
- Continue holding until the screen turns off. Microsoft describes this as about 15 seconds.
- Keep both buttons held for at least 15 seconds, then release them.
- Wait 10 seconds without pressing anything.
- Press the power button once to start the Surface.
The screen turning off during the hold is part of the procedure. Release both buttons after the required hold, observe the 10-second pause and then use a normal single press to start the tablet. This volume-up-plus-power method is specific to earlier models such as Surface Pro 3; it should not be confused with power-button-only directions written for newer Surface devices.
If the tablet starts after the forced restart, allow Windows to finish loading before reconnecting the Type Cover, dock, monitor or USB devices. Reintroduce accessories individually so a return of the black screen can be associated with a specific connection.

Install current Surface and Windows updates once you can sign in. Microsoft recommends updating after a successful restart because firmware and operating-system updates can address startup and device behavior. Keep the charger connected during updates and avoid interrupting the process.
After updating, restart normally and test the display again. If the black screen returns only when a particular accessory is attached, leave that accessory disconnected and arrange support for the accessory or its connection. If the symptom returns with nothing attached, record whether the Surface Connect LED was lit, whether the keyboard shortcut produced a response and whether the device could reach UEFI; those observations help a technician narrow the fault.

Can USB boot or Surface UEFI help when the screen is black?
USB boot is a later recovery path, not the first fix for a Surface that shows no sign of power. Use it only if the tablet can reach Surface UEFI and you have a valid bootable or recovery USB drive.
To enter UEFI, hold the volume-up button while pressing and releasing the power button. For Surface Pro 3, Microsoft specifies the alternate boot order as USB > SSD. A visible UEFI screen demonstrates that the display and firmware can produce an image, but it does not by itself repair Windows or prove that a particular storage device is healthy.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If UEFI appears, verify that the USB drive is the intended boot or recovery media before changing settings. If the tablet cannot reach UEFI, return to the charger, accessory and forced-restart checks; repeatedly changing boot settings cannot compensate for a device that is not receiving or processing power.
What if I do not have a keyboard for the wake shortcut?
The official startup sequence does not require a keyboard for the accessory-removal, charging or volume-up-plus-power steps. A Microsoft Q&A response also mentions pressing volume-up and volume-down together three times quickly; it says a responsive device may beep. That is community guidance rather than the primary current startup procedure, so treat it as an optional observation and prioritize the documented restart sequence.
If you borrow a compatible keyboard, use it first for the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B test. Avoid repeatedly pressing random key combinations, which can make it harder to tell whether a later response came from the wake command or from a restart.
When should I stop troubleshooting and request service?
Move to service, self-repair information or in-person support when the Surface remains unresponsive after the accessory, power, charging, wake-shortcut and forced-restart checks, or when it cannot display UEFI despite having a verified power connection. Microsoft lists those escalation routes, but in-person authorized options vary by country or region.

Before contacting support, write down the exact sequence you completed and the result of each check:
- Whether the Surface Connect LED was lit
- Whether the outlet and cable connections were verified
- How long the device charged before another startup attempt
- Whether the keyboard wake shortcut was attempted
- Whether the volume-up-plus-power procedure turned the screen off
- Whether UEFI appeared and, if so, whether a USB drive was detected
This record prevents repeating the same tests and gives a repair provider useful evidence without guessing at an internal diagnosis. If the power supply is damaged or missing, confirm compatibility and charging requirements before purchasing a replacement; the available guidance does not identify a universal part number or current price.
Which mistakes make a black-screen diagnosis harder?
- Leaving peripherals connected: a dock, monitor, storage card or USB device can interfere with startup, so test the bare tablet first.
- Skipping the minimum charge period: retrying immediately after connecting power does not follow Microsoft’s 15-minute charging guidance.
- Using the wrong restart procedure: Surface Pro 3 belongs to the earlier-model volume-up-plus-power group, not the newer power-only instructions.
- Assuming an unlit charger LED is normal: Microsoft identifies an unlit indicator as a possible power-supply problem that warrants checking the supply and connections.
- Starting with USB recovery: recovery media is relevant only after the Surface can reach UEFI and a valid bootable drive is available.
- Changing several things at once: reconnect or replace one item at a time so you can identify which change affects the symptom.
What is the shortest safe sequence to try right now?
For a quick, orderly attempt, remove every accessory, connect the designed Surface power supply, verify the outlet and Surface Connect LED, and charge for at least 15 minutes. With a keyboard attached, try Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. If there is still no image or response, hold volume-up and power until the screen turns off, continue for at least 15 seconds, release, wait 10 seconds and press power once. If Windows starts, install current Surface and Windows updates; if it does not, check whether UEFI can appear and then use Microsoft’s regional service or self-repair options.

Does a black screen prove that the Surface Pro 3 battery is dead?
No. The same symptom can occur when an accessory blocks startup, the power supply is not delivering power, the display needs a wake command or the system needs the model-specific restart. The checks above establish response and power behavior before any battery conclusion is drawn.
Can I use a random USB-C or laptop charger to test the tablet?
The documented checks call for the power supply designed for the Surface and do not provide a universal substitute specification. Confirm that a replacement meets the Surface Pro 3’s charging requirements before connecting it; physical plug fit alone is not proof of compatibility.
Is the newer Surface power-button reset procedure valid for Surface Pro 3?
Microsoft groups Surface Pro 3 with earlier models that use volume-up plus power for the forced restart. Newer-model directions that rely on the power button alone should not be substituted for this model-specific sequence.

What does it mean if UEFI appears but Windows does not?
It means the tablet can display its firmware interface, so USB recovery may be relevant if you have valid media. Surface Pro 3’s specified alternate boot order is USB before SSD; if you cannot reach UEFI at all, continue with hardware and power checks instead.
Are in-person Surface repair options available everywhere?
No. Microsoft notes that authorized in-person support availability depends on country or region. Check the options offered for your location before shipping the device or planning a walk-in visit.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and includes a 2-day free trial without a credit card before subscription; results vary, and it cannot repair every black-screen cause.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a black screen prove that the Surface Pro 3 battery is dead?
No. The symptom can result from an accessory, power-delivery issue, display-wake state or startup condition. Establishing whether the tablet responds to charging, keyboard and firmware checks is necessary before blaming the battery.
Can I use a random USB-C or laptop charger to test the tablet?
Use the power supply designed for the Surface and verify that any replacement meets Surface Pro 3 charging requirements. A connector that fits does not establish electrical compatibility.
Is the newer Surface power-button reset procedure valid for Surface Pro 3?
Surface Pro 3 follows Microsoft’s earlier-model volume-up-plus-power restart. Do not replace that sequence with instructions written for newer models.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat does it mean if UEFI appears but Windows does not?
The firmware interface is reachable, making a valid recovery USB potentially useful. Surface Pro 3’s alternate boot order is USB before SSD.
Are in-person Surface repair options available everywhere?
No. Microsoft says authorized in-person availability depends on country or region, so check local options before arranging a visit or shipment.
