The code 0X080070057 is not the standard format used in the Microsoft Windows Update guidance reviewed for this problem. Check the exact code in Windows Update history before changing anything: you may actually have 0x80070057, which Microsoft describes as “The parameter is incorrect,” or 0x80070005, Microsoft’s separate E_ACCESSDENIED access-denied error.

Those codes require different troubleshooting. Back up personal files first, run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, and use System File Checker for the 0x80070057 path. If the code is 0x80070005, inspect the CBS log to identify the specific file or registry key that Windows could not access instead of resetting permissions broadly.

What does “Denied 0X080070057” mean?

It most likely combines or mistypes two different Windows error codes. Microsoft documents 0x80070057 and 0x80070005 separately, so applying a fix for one to the other can waste time or change permissions unnecessarily.

Why the code needs verification

Windows may show a generic update-failure message while placing the useful hexadecimal code in update history. The characters are easy to misread: a leading zero, the letter O, and the hexadecimal digit zero can look similar, and an extra zero can turn 0x80070057 into the malformed 0X080070057 shown in the title.

Do not describe 0X080070057 as a recognized Microsoft error until you have checked the original message or history entry. Record the complete code, the update identifier (often beginning with “KB”), and whether the failure occurred during a regular update or a Windows upgrade.

How the two documented codes differ

Code Microsoft’s description Primary investigation
0x80070057 “The parameter is incorrect.” Microsoft also lists it among update-installation failures. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then System File Checker; review configuration, file-integrity, and permission causes.
0x80070005 E_ACCESSDENIED, a general access-denied error. Find the denied object in the CBS log and correct that file or registry key’s permissions as appropriate.

Microsoft associates 0x80070057 update failures with possibilities such as corrupted files, permission problems, or an incorrect system configuration. Those are possibilities, not proof of the cause on a particular computer.

How do I find the exact Windows Update error code?

Use Windows Update history rather than relying on a shortened notification. Microsoft’s installation-error guidance specifically directs users to locate the code in update history when Windows reports that an update failed.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Choose Windows Update.
  3. Select Update history.
  4. Expand the failed update entry and copy the complete error code and update number.

Windows 11’s labels can change slightly between releases. If the notification opens a different Windows Update page, use the history link on that page and capture the code shown beside the failed item.

Windows 10 and other supported editions

Open Settings, go to Update & Security, choose Windows Update, and select View update history. Look for the failed entry and write down its exact code. If the history page does not show a code, keep a screenshot of the on-screen message and note the update name before continuing.

What to record before troubleshooting

  • The exact hexadecimal code, including every zero and the 0x prefix.
  • The update identifier and description.
  • Your Windows edition and version, such as Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • The date and time of the failed attempt.
  • Whether the computer is managed by an employer or school, which can restrict administrative changes.

What should I back up before trying a fix?

Microsoft recommends backing up personal files before following its general Windows Update troubleshooting steps. A backup will not repair the update, but it protects documents and other irreplaceable data if later recovery work is required.

Two practical backup choices

  • Copy important folders to external storage that you can verify independently.
  • Synchronize personal files with OneDrive if it is already configured and the files show as fully synchronized.

Confirm that the backup contains the files you need before changing system settings. Do not treat a cloud-sync icon alone as proof that every file is available offline or fully uploaded.

How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter?

The troubleshooter is the least invasive first repair. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 guidance starts with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app; Microsoft’s general instructions also provide a Settings route for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Windows 11 Get Help route

  1. Open Start and search for Get Help.
  2. Open the app and search for Windows Update troubleshooter.
  3. Follow the automated checks and approve a repair only when Windows explains what it will change.
  4. When the process finishes, restart the computer.
  5. Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If Get Help is unavailable or its automated flow does not resolve the issue, use the Settings troubleshooter described next.

Settings route for Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Complete the suggested actions, restart when prompted, and check for updates again.

Settings route for Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Choose Windows Update, select Run the troubleshooter, and follow the prompts.
  4. Restart the computer after it completes, then retry the update.

The troubleshooter can detect and repair common update conditions, but Microsoft does not present it as a guaranteed solution for every failure.

How do I fix Windows Update error 0x80070057?

For the verified 0x80070057 path, run System File Checker after the troubleshooter. Microsoft recommends this utility for the 0x80070057 and 0x80080005 error family.

Run System File Checker as administrator

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. At the elevated command window, enter sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  4. Wait for the scan to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while it is checking protected Windows files.
  5. Follow the result message. If Windows asks for a restart, restart before trying Windows Update again.

System File Checker is a diagnostic and repair step, not a promise that the update will install. If it reports that it could not repair some files, keep that message with your update code; it is useful evidence for later support.

Retry the update cleanly

After the restart, open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install the same update again. If the code changes, stop treating it as the original failure and record the new code from update history.

How do I fix Windows Update error 0x80070005 access denied?

0x80070005 is not interchangeable with 0x80070057. Microsoft Learn defines it as E_ACCESSDENIED and recommends investigating the CBS log to determine which object was denied access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Locate the relevant CBS log entry

  1. Open File Explorer and enter %Windir%logsCBS in the address bar.
  2. Open the latest CBS log file available in that folder.
  3. Search the file for the exact text , error, including the comma and space.
  4. Match the event’s timestamp to the time shown for the failed update.
  5. Read the lines immediately before the matching event. They should identify the file or registry key involved in the denied operation.

The timestamp matters because CBS.log can contain unrelated servicing events. Use the entry that aligns with the failed update rather than changing permissions on every file in the folder.

Correct only the identified permission problem

Once the log identifies the denied file or registry key, determine which account or service needs access and change permissions only on that object, following Microsoft’s guidance for the specific object. Broadly resetting permissions across the Windows directory can create new security and servicing problems and is not the recommended first response.

Check administrator access

Some updates require an administrator account. If you are signed in with a standard account, ask the device’s administrator to run the update or perform the approved repair. On a work or school computer, local policy may prevent you from changing the required permission even when you can open Settings.

Temporarily changing security software

Microsoft’s access-denied troubleshooting mentions temporarily disabling antivirus or firewall software in some cases. Treat this as a controlled diagnostic only: use the temporary control supplied by a security product you trust, disconnect from risky networks while protection is paused, restore protection immediately after the test, and do not leave the device unprotected. If an administrator manages the security product, obtain approval before changing it.

Why did the update fail, and which branch should I follow?

The exact code determines the most useful next action. Use this decision table after checking update history.

What you found What Microsoft’s description points to Next action
The entry is 0x80070057 An incorrect parameter or an update-installation failure; corrupted files, permissions, and configuration are possible contributors. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, then run sfc /scannow from an elevated Command Prompt.
The entry is 0x80070005 A general access-denied condition. Inspect the latest CBS log, match the event timestamp, identify the denied object, and address that object’s permissions specifically.
The entry is neither code The title’s code was not verified, so these two branches may not apply. Use the complete code from update history and follow the Microsoft guidance for that code instead of guessing.

What should I do if the update still fails?

Do not jump straight to a broad permission reset or reinstall solely because one attempt failed. Preserve the evidence and narrow the problem before taking a more disruptive action.

Collect a useful failure record

  • Copy the exact code from update history after the latest attempt.
  • Record the update identifier and the time of failure.
  • Save the Windows Update troubleshooter result.
  • For 0x80070057, keep the System File Checker result message.
  • For 0x80070005, keep the relevant CBS.log lines around the matching timestamp.

When to involve an administrator or Microsoft support

Escalate when the computer is managed, the denied object belongs to the operating system, SFC reports unrepaired files, or the same update fails after the documented steps. Provide the update identifier, exact code, Windows version, and the time-correlated log details so the next person can investigate the same failure rather than repeat generic repairs.

Actions not justified by this error alone

  • Do not assume the malformed title proves malware or hardware failure.
  • Do not delete system folders or reset all Windows permissions without a specific, documented reason.
  • Do not keep antivirus or firewall protection disabled while testing unrelated update attempts.
  • Do not treat a changed error code as confirmation that the original cause was fixed; investigate the new code separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can 0x80070057 appear during a Windows feature upgrade as well as a normal update?

Yes. Microsoft’s installation-error guidance uses 0x80070057 for upgrade and installation situations, while its general Windows Update guidance also lists it among update failures. The update history entry and the update identifier tell you which operation actually failed.

No. First identify the denied file or registry key and the event that corresponds to the failed update. Changing permissions without that information can hide the original cause and affect unrelated Windows servicing operations.

Is a clean Windows installation the next step after one failed update?

Not on the evidence of this code alone. Back up your files, preserve the exact error and logs, and use the documented troubleshooting path or administrator support before considering a disruptive reinstall.
