There isn’t one app that is secretly filling every iPhone. To find the culprit on yours, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, wait for the list to load, and check which apps and content categories use the most space. Before deleting a large app, look at whether its size comes from the app itself or from documents and data you may want to keep.
How to see what is using iPhone storage
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Wait for the storage screen to populate. Apple says it shows available space, storage use, and recommendations.
- Review the largest entries and any recommendation cards. The list on your phone—not a general claim about a particular app—is the best guide to what is using space on your device.

Choose what to remove without losing more than you intend
An app’s displayed storage use can include the app and its documents and data. Those documents may include content you created or saved, so consider what you need before removing the app.

Apple explains the difference between offloading and deleting in its iPhone storage guide and its instructions for deleting apps. Before deleting an app, check its own storage controls and confirm that anything important is synced or backed up; unsynced local content may be lost.

Check other space-saving options before deleting an app
Apple recommends reviewing other common storage categories too. In iPhone Storage, consider whether you still need:
- Downloaded videos in the TV app or streaming apps.
- Large conversations or attachments in Messages.
- Documents stored in Files.
- Photos and videos saved on the device.
- Apps you no longer use.
If photos and videos take up the most space
Backing them up to iCloud and then removing local copies is one option. Confirm that the backup is complete and that the photos are available where you expect before deleting anything from the device. Apple describes storage recommendations and photo options in its iPhone storage guide.

Automatically offload apps you rarely use
To enable the option, go to Settings > Apps > App Store and turn on Offload Unused Apps. Apple says that when storage is low, iPhone can remove unused apps while keeping their data. Its storage guide covers the setting.

Cache files are recoverable data that apps can store in locations the system may purge. Apple’s developer documentation says the system automatically purges cache-folder files when device storage is low. That does not make every app’s documents and data disposable, and it does not provide a universal user-facing control to clear all app data. There is no reliable fixed amount of space a cache cleanup will recover. If an app offers its own storage-management controls, check those first. Deleting and reinstalling an app is a more destructive last resort: deletion removes the app and related data, so unsynced content could be lost.
