If After Effects 2026 shows an out-of-memory warning or freezes when you press Spacebar, first check the exact app version, then test the version-specific disk-cache setting and reduce memory pressure. A spacebar freeze does not have one universal cause: a cache defect, a demanding project, limited available RAM, or a plug-in can produce similar symptoms.
Start with your After Effects version
Open After Effects and check its version in the application’s About screen. Adobe’s release notes list two relevant 2026 fixes, but they address distinct problems:

- Version 26.5, released September 2026: Adobe says it improved playback stability when using disk cache.
- Version 26.2.1: Adobe fixed an issue where preview could stop and the application could not be closed.
Install the latest available update for your installation, then test the same project. These fixes make updating a sensible first step; they do not establish that every preview freeze has the same cause. See Adobe’s fixed issues in After Effects.
If you use 26.0 or 26.2, test compressed disk caching
Adobe documents unexpected crashes in After Effects 26.0 and 26.2 when Compressed Disk Caching is enabled. The setting is enabled by default and may be incompatible with some projects or hardware. If you are on either affected version, try Adobe’s workaround:

- Open Preferences > Disk > Disk Cache.
- Uncheck Enable Compressed Frames (Lossless).
- Restart After Effects, reopen the project, and try the preview again.
If the setting is already off, or changing it makes no difference, continue with the memory checks rather than assuming the cache is the cause. Adobe’s version-specific notice is on its Known issues in After Effects page.
Free memory available to previews
When the warning says After Effects is out of memory, close unused applications—especially other Adobe apps—then restart After Effects and retry. Adobe says Adobe applications share the available memory pool, and third-party effects can also contribute to high memory use.

Review the RAM available for setting in Memory & CPU preferences. The path depends on your operating system:

Purge the cache and watch what happens
A purge is useful as a diagnostic step if previews stop or the warning returns. Save your work first, then choose Edit > Purge > All Memory & Disk Cache and try the preview again.
If the problem recurs, monitor After Effects’ memory use in Windows Task Manager or macOS Activity Monitor while repeating previews and purges. Adobe recommends isolating effects when memory use keeps rising: test a copy of the project, remove a suspect effect, restart After Effects, and repeat. A plug-in or effect that continues to consume memory may be involved. Follow Adobe’s low-memory troubleshooting steps.

Tell a memory warning apart from a freeze or crash
Note whether After Effects displays a specific warning, stops previewing, becomes unresponsive, or crashes. Also note whether the failure happens in every project or only one, whether it follows repeated previews, and whether changing the compressed-cache setting or updating changes it.

Reduce the project’s memory demands
If the warning or preview freeze persists after the basic checks, simplify the workload and test one change at a time in a copy of the project. Adobe identifies several features that can increase memory requirements:
- Complex projects that can be divided into smaller compositions or stages.
- Memory-intensive layers, effects, layer styles, or blending modes.
- 3D effects and output options that place higher demands on the system.
- Third-party effects or plug-ins that may be consuming memory.
Remove unused project elements and update After Effects, graphics drivers, and plug-ins. Adobe’s performance guidance recommends at least 2 GB of RAM per processor core; this is a general recommendation, not a guarantee that a given project will run without memory problems. Check disk-cache storage, but do not mistake it for RAM
After Effects can use disk cache to retain frames on storage and improve performance when retrieving a cached frame is faster than rendering it again. Adobe recommends a fast, separate disk for the cache and says SSDs are well suited. Check that the cache volume has adequate free space; Adobe’s stated default maximum cache size is 10% of the volume’s total size, up to 100 GB, and the application checks for 10 GB free beyond the configured cache amount. These are Adobe’s documented defaults and checks, not a promise that every system uses the same configured cache size. Details are in Memory and storage in After Effects.

Disk cache does not replace RAM needed to render a frame. Adobe explains: “After Effects requires a contiguous block of memory to store each frame; it cannot store a frame in pieces in fragmented memory.” If a frame cannot fit in the required memory, adding cache space alone will not resolve that limit.
Use older workarounds only if the current checks fail
Adobe’s September 2024 “Unable to allocate memory” article lists additional diagnostics, including disabling Mercury Transmit, removing third-party plug-ins, pre-composing, and resetting preferences. Its guidance predates the 2026 memory and cache documentation, so verify preference labels in your installed version and try the less disruptive checks first. Resetting preferences can change your setup; reserve it for a case where simpler tests have not helped. See Adobe’s Unable to allocate memory guidance.
