There is no single cheapest grocery-delivery service for every household. The lowest delivered cost depends on the providers serving your postcode, your normal basket, order frequency, delivery speed, item prices and promotions, and whether you already pay for a membership. Compare the complete checkout total for the same basket—items, delivery and service fees, order-minimum or rush charges, tips, taxes, deposits and membership cost—not the advertised delivery fee alone. The fee examples below are from U.S. provider pages; shoppers elsewhere should verify local services, currencies and rules.
What is the cheapest grocery delivery service?
The cheapest service is the one that produces the lowest delivered total for your actual address and usual order. A provider with a free-delivery label can still cost more because its groceries are priced higher, a service fee remains, a promotion is unavailable online, or your order falls below a minimum.

Amazon lists grocery delivery by eligible postcode, and Walmart says delivery depends on your address, the items in the cart, inventory and available time slots. A low fee is irrelevant if the service cannot deliver your basket when you need it.
Use one representative basket and compare locally available choices at checkout. Repeat the comparison when your shopping pattern changes, because a result for a large monthly stock-up may differ from a result for small weekly orders.

How do I compare the complete cost of a grocery delivery order?
Record every charge that appears before payment. The useful comparison is the delivered total for identical quantities and a comparable delivery window.

This is a comparison method, not a published statistic. Apply identical assumptions to each provider: the same products, number of orders, delivery speed, tip policy and membership treatment.
How should I build a fair test basket?
Choose a basket that resembles what you normally buy rather than a handful of unusually cheap items. Include staples, fresh foods, household sizes and any products that determine where you shop. If one retailer does not stock an exact item, record the closest equivalent and note the difference instead of silently replacing it.
Match products and quantities
- Use the same brand, package size and quantity whenever possible.
- Compare unit prices when package sizes differ; a lower shelf price may represent less product.
- Set substitution preferences before comparing totals. A replacement can alter both price and quantity.
- Include recurring items such as bags, bottle deposits or specialty products that are easy to overlook.
Hold delivery conditions constant
Select the same type of window on each service, such as a scheduled evening slot. If one provider offers only a faster or slower option, record that difference beside the total rather than treating unlike speeds as equivalent. Repeat the test with an express slot only when speed is a real household requirement.
How do I account for a grocery-delivery membership?
Separate the membership’s total household cost from its incremental grocery cost. If you already pay for a membership for other benefits, the extra cost of using it for groceries may be zero, but you should still record the full annual cost when comparing the household’s overall spending.

Allocate the fee across realistic orders
Divide an annual membership price by the number of orders you genuinely expect to place during the year. For example, a $98 annual plan used for 26 orders contributes about $3.77 per order before tax; used for 12 orders, it contributes about $8.17. Those are allocation examples, not guarantees of savings, and the membership still has to be available at your address.
For a monthly plan, multiply the monthly price by the months you will keep it. Do not assume a trial or promotional rate will continue after its stated period. If you may cancel, model the months you expect to retain the plan and include any nonrefundable amount according to the provider’s terms.
Check what the membership actually waives
A membership can remove a listed delivery fee while leaving service fees, tips, below-minimum charges, rush fees or item-price differences. Read the eligibility language for each order and verify the final cart total rather than treating a “free delivery” label as a zero-cost order.
What does Walmart+ cost for grocery delivery?
For U.S. shoppers, Walmart’s membership help page lists Walmart+ at $98 per year or $12.95 per month, plus applicable tax. Walmart’s delivery information says members do not pay the listed $7.95–$9.95 store-delivery fee when the order and slot qualify. The same information identifies a $35 order minimum for free scheduled delivery.

A household ordering less than $35 at a time should model the $6.99 fee or consolidate items only if that fits its storage and cash-flow needs.
What are Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods delivery fees?
Amazon’s U.S. grocery help page separates Amazon Fresh from Whole Foods Market; their charges should not be combined. For Amazon Fresh two-hour delivery, the listed Prime schedule is $0 for orders over $100, $6.95 for orders from $50 to $100, and $9.95 for orders under $50. Non-Prime charges vary with basket size, and rush or one-hour delivery can add fees.

How do Instacart and retailer storefronts affect the total?
Instacart says delivery fees vary by retailer, delivery window and order total. Instacart+ members receive $0 delivery fees on eligible orders of $10 or more per retailer, but variable service fees remain and tips are separate. Long-distance or priority fees may also apply.

Retailer pricing can differ from in-store pricing and promotions. Sprouts states that some in-store promotions and digital coupons are unavailable through its Instacart storefront, and that item promotions and service fees have conditions. Compare the store’s complete cart total, not the membership’s delivery-fee label.

How do I run a lowest-cost comparison step by step?
- List eligible services. Enter your postcode or address on each provider and remove any option that cannot deliver your normal basket.
- Write one fixed basket. Record product names, sizes, quantities, acceptable substitutes and the date of the test.
- Choose a comparable window. Start with scheduled delivery. Note whether a provider offers a $0, discounted or only paid slot.
- Enter the basket without discounts. Capture item subtotals and identify products whose online price differs from your usual store price.
- Apply only available offers. Add account-specific coupons or promotions that are valid for the same basket; do not count unavailable in-store deals.
- Add membership cost. If buying a plan for groceries, allocate its annual or monthly cost across expected orders. If already paying for it, show both total household cost and incremental grocery cost.
- Record every checkout charge. Include delivery, service, minimum-order, rush, priority, bags, deposits, taxes and your planned tip.
- Save the delivered total. A screenshot or written record lets you audit later changes without relying on a headline price.
- Repeat for the next provider. Keep basket, delivery speed, tip and order frequency assumptions identical.
- Stress-test the winner. Recalculate with your common small order, a larger stock-up and the fastest speed you sometimes need. A different provider may win under those conditions.
When can a slower or larger order lower the cost?
Scheduled delivery often has a different price from express or priority delivery. If your household can accept a wider window, compare that slot directly with the faster alternative. Do not value a nominally free slot as cheaper when it forces a membership or an order size you would not otherwise choose.
Order minimums create a second trade-off. Combining items into a qualifying order can remove a below-minimum fee, but buying unwanted food to cross a threshold is not a saving. Compare the fee with the cost of holding extra inventory and the risk of waste.

How should I compare a membership I already have with a new subscription?
Make two columns for each provider:
- Total household cost: membership plus all grocery charges and any other household use.
- Incremental grocery cost: only the additional amount caused by grocery ordering, treating an already-paid membership as a sunk cost for that decision.
Use total household cost when deciding whether to subscribe. Use incremental cost when choosing where to place the next order after the membership decision is already made. This prevents an existing subscription from being counted twice while still showing the real annual budget.
What mistakes make a grocery-delivery comparison unreliable?
Comparing delivery fees instead of delivered totals
A $0 delivery line can coexist with a service fee, higher item prices, tip and taxes. Always compare the amount due for the same basket.
Using different baskets
One service may appear cheaper simply because it lacks expensive items from the other cart. Keep a written list and check quantities before recording totals.
Counting unavailable promotions
Promotions may be limited to a store, account, channel or date. If an offer is not visible in the online cart, leave it out of the comparison.
Ignoring small-order and speed charges
Below-minimum, priority and rush fees can dominate a small weekly order. Test the order size and speed you actually use.
Assuming membership covers every fee
Delivery-fee waivers do not automatically remove service fees, tips or other checkout charges. Read the eligibility line beside each fee.
Forgetting local availability
Inventory and slots change by address and time. Recheck the postcode and the actual slot before treating a provider as a reliable option.

What should I check before placing each order?
- Is the provider serving the correct address and does the selected slot have the promised fee?
- Does the basket meet the stated minimum for that delivery type?
- Are item sizes, quantities and substitutions still correct?
- Did a coupon or promotion actually apply to this online cart?
- Are delivery, service, rush, priority, bag, deposit and tax lines present and understood?
- Is the membership fee being allocated consistently in your annual worksheet?
- Is the tip amount included in the comparison?
- Would a scheduled slot or a different order size suit the household without buying unnecessary food?
- Has anything changed since the last test—membership renewal, item price, fee, inventory or delivery window?
Recheck the final amount immediately before payment. Provider terms, prices, inventory and slot availability are changeable, so a past winning result is a starting point rather than a permanent national ranking.

Can I compare grocery delivery services without joining a membership?
Yes. Run the same basket through each service as a one-off order first, then add a membership only as a separate scenario. This shows whether the subscription changes the result instead of assuming its delivery waiver will repay the fee.
Should taxes and tips be included when comparing providers?
Include both whenever the checkout shows them, and use the same tip assumption for every service. If a tax or deposit is imposed by your jurisdiction rather than the provider, keep it in each total so the amounts remain like for like.
How can I tell whether an online grocery price is really a discount?
Check the item’s original and discounted prices in the same cart and confirm that the offer applies to your account, quantity and delivery channel. A store promotion that is absent from the online storefront should not be counted as savings.
What if the cheapest service keeps substituting items?
Record the replacement price and quantity after fulfillment, then include that outcome in your next comparison. If substitutions make the basket unpredictable, adjust the service’s ranking for the value of control and reliability rather than comparing the initial estimate alone.
