The feature was reported on October 23, 2026, the 25th anniversary of Apple’s announcement of the original iPod on October 23, 2001. MacRumors, 9to5Mac, Digital Trends, and Notebookcheck have reported on the Easter egg and its behavior. Apple has not been reported to publish official instructions for it, so the controls and availability described here are based on those reports rather than a promise that the feature will remain unchanged.
This is best understood as a small, self-contained web toy. It imitates the visual language of the original iPod’s monochrome screen, circular click wheel, center button, and Menu button, but it is not a complete hardware simulator. You do not need to own an iPod, connect one to your computer, install an extension, or buy an accessory to try it.

How do I open the hidden iPod?
Enter the path directly in your browser’s address bar. The reported working example is music.apple.com/macrumors; music.apple.com/ipod has also been reported to work, though the surrounding message may differ.
- Open a browser such as the one you normally use to visit websites. Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers may render the page differently, so keep a second browser available if the first one does not respond.
- Type
music.apple.com/macrumorsinto the address bar. Include thehttps://prefix if your browser does not add it automatically, and make sure the path follows the Apple Music domain rather than a search result or an app deep link. - Load the page and wait for the Apple Music site to finish rendering. What the error page means
Seeing “Page Not Found” is expected in this case. The unusual path is the trigger, and the virtual player is presented as an alternative to the missing page. “Give this a spin instead” is displayed interface copy, not an instruction to purchase a device or a claim that Apple has created a supported product.
Why does the link open the Music app instead of the web page?
The Easter egg is part of the website, so it needs to stay open in a browser. A device may hand an Apple Music link to its installed Music app; paste the path into the browser’s address bar instead of opening it from an app or a link that redirects there.
- On Mac: MacRumors reports that holding Command while clicking a link can keep it in the browser.
- On iOS: MacRumors suggests pressing and holding the link, then choosing Open.
- Most reliable fallback: Copy or type the path directly into the browser address bar. Do not use the Music app’s search field, because that is a different destination.
Those link-opening gestures are reported suggestions, not universal browser settings. The important distinction is the destination: you need the web page, not the native Music app. If your phone shows an “Open in Music” prompt, dismiss it, return to Safari or another browser, and paste the complete address there.
On a computer, opening a private or incognito window can help determine whether an extension, cached redirect, or previous app association is interfering, but the reports do not establish that private browsing is required. The essential step is simply keeping the URL in a browser tab.

How do I use the virtual iPod controls?

The wheel is directional rather than a normal scroll bar. Move around its circumference to change the highlighted row, then press the center button when the desired row is selected. A brief center-button tap is different from the longer hold used for the game shortcut. Menu is the navigation-back control, so use it instead of the browser’s Back button when you want to remain inside the virtual player.
The main menu includes Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Settings. Move through the available items, select a category with the center button, and continue into its entries. A category may take a moment to populate, particularly if the page is still loading. If arrow keys or Enter do not respond, click or touch the on-screen wheel and buttons instead.
A simple first-session route
- Start on the main menu and rotate or drag the wheel until Songs is highlighted.

The 90-second figure is a maximum described for many tracks, not a promise that every selection will play for exactly 90 seconds.
To try a preview, open Songs or browse into another music category, select a track, and use the center button. If a track ends quickly, that can reflect a shorter available preview rather than a control failure. The reports also do not establish that every Apple Music song appears in this interface, so an absent title should not be treated as evidence that your account is misconfigured.

There is no supported indication that the Easter egg unlocks complete streams, offline downloads, lossless audio, or a full library-management workflow. Treat it as a quick sample of Apple Music’s web experience, not as a replacement for listening to a complete song in the regular service.

Is the hidden iPod permanent, and what if it stops working?
