If Storage Sense hasn’t freed enough space, use Windows’ Cleanup recommendations to review suggested items, then sort files in File Explorer to find large personal files. Delete only what you recognize and no longer need; move files you want to keep to another drive or, where appropriate, make cloud files online-only.
Check which drive needs space
Open File Explorer, select This PC, and check the available space shown for the affected drive. You can also open Settings > System > Storage to see how storage is divided into categories. This helps you determine whether the pressure is on the Windows system drive or another drive.

Review Windows cleanup suggestions
Windows 11: Cleanup recommendations
- Open Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations.
- Review the suggested categories, which may include Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud, and Unused apps.
- Check the items and the estimated space Windows says each selection will free. Choose only the items you want removed, then confirm the cleanup.
Cleanup recommendations help identify possible cleanup targets; they do not decide whether a personal file matters to you. Review the selections before removing them. See Microsoft’s Free up drive space in Windows and Storage settings in Windows for the documented options.
Windows 10: Disk Cleanup
Windows 10 users can run Disk Cleanup to review and remove selected temporary and system-file categories. Select Clean up system files to see additional categories. Do not select a category unless you understand what it contains and are comfortable removing it. Microsoft’s current drive-space guidance covers the Windows 10 steps.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Find the largest personal files in File Explorer
- Open File Explorer and check likely locations, such as Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads.
- Switch the folder to Details view.
- Select the Size column heading to sort by size. Select it again if needed to put the largest files at the top.
- Open or inspect a candidate file and decide whether you still need it before taking action.
Sorting is a way to locate large files, not a safety check. Do not delete a file simply because it is large, and do not remove unknown files from Windows or application folders on that basis.
Decide whether to delete, move, or keep a file online-only
| Option | Keep the file? | Available offline? | Frees local space? | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delete a file | No, once permanently removed | No | Yes, after it is removed from the Recycle Bin | May be recoverable from the Recycle Bin until it is emptied; emptying it removes that recovery route. |
| Move it to an external drive | Yes, on the external drive | Only when that drive is connected | Yes, after the move completes | Move it back if you reconnect the drive and there is room. |
| Make an eligible cloud file online-only | Yes, in the cloud | No; an internet connection is needed to download it for local use | Yes, by removing its local copy | Download it again when needed, subject to cloud access and connectivity. |
Delete files you no longer need
Delete only files you recognize and have decided you do not need. Deleting a file may send it to the Recycle Bin rather than immediately freeing all of its space. Review the bin’s contents and empty it only if you are sure you do not need to restore anything there.

Move files you want to retain
For files you rarely use but want to keep, move them to an external storage device such as a USB drive or SD card. Confirm the move is complete before removing the original copy. Files on removable storage are available only while that storage is connected.
Use cloud storage selectively
For eligible OneDrive files, Files On-Demand can leave content online-only instead of storing a full local copy. Online-only files need connectivity to download for local use. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from Storage Sense management. Microsoft explains these settings in Manage drive space with Storage Sense.

Understand what Storage Sense does—and what it may leave alone
Storage Sense works on the system drive, usually C:. Its cleanup of Downloads and cloud content depends on settings and file status; those locations are not simply cleared by default. It can remove configured temporary files or Recycle Bin content, but finding and deciding what to do with arbitrary personal files is a separate task. That is why a manual review may still be needed after Storage Sense runs.
Take care with Windows.old and system-file cleanup
Windows’ cleanup tools may offer the previous Windows installation, stored in Windows.old, for removal after an upgrade. Microsoft says deleting it removes the files needed to return to the previous Windows version; the deletion cannot be undone and the rollback option is lost. In the upgrade context described by Microsoft, the previous version is listed for deletion if the upgrade was fewer than 10 days earlier. Keep it if you may need to roll back.

Do not try to free space by manually deleting large files from Windows or application folders. Use the named Windows cleanup categories and review what they contain rather than treating file size alone as permission to remove them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recheck the drive and investigate if space keeps disappearing
After cleanup or moving files, check This PC or Settings > System > Storage again to see whether available space changed. If a Temp folder refills quickly, Microsoft notes a specific low-space scenario involving Microsoft Store application files. A recurring drop in free space is a reason to identify what is growing rather than repeatedly deleting unfamiliar files.
