To find out whether antivirus software is slowing your Windows PC, first identify the security provider currently supplying real-time protection, then check every installed antivirus app. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers and note which product reports active protection. Next, review Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 (or Apps & features in Windows 10), and use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features if necessary.
Remove only the unwanted or duplicate product through its own uninstaller, restart when prompted, and confirm that Microsoft Defender Antivirus or your chosen replacement is active before judging performance. Running two real-time antivirus products can reduce performance or destabilize Windows, but malware, startup programs, low storage, outdated software and aging hardware can cause the same symptoms.

How can I tell whether antivirus is actually slowing my PC?
Antivirus is a plausible cause when a real-time scan coincides with high CPU or disk activity, especially after installing a second security suite. It is not proof by itself: Windows may be slow because of malware, a crowded startup list, low free space, pending updates or hardware that no longer meets current software demands.
Look for a timing pattern
Note when the slowdown occurs. A short burst while opening a newly downloaded file may be normal scanning. Slowness that begins at every startup, persists while the PC is idle, or started immediately after another antivirus was installed is more suggestive of a configuration or software conflict.

Use Task Manager as a clue, not a verdict
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes tab, sort by CPU and then by Disk. Security processes with sustained activity while you are doing ordinary work are worth investigating, but do not end antivirus processes manually; doing so can leave protection incomplete and make the diagnosis less reliable.
Record a simple baseline before removing anything: how long the desktop takes to become responsive after sign-in, whether File Explorer opens promptly, and whether disk usage remains high when no application is busy. Recheck the same activities after a restart, rather than relying on a single momentary reading.

How do I see which antivirus is protecting Windows?
Windows Security identifies the provider that Windows recognizes as active. This is more useful than guessing from a tray icon, because security suites can leave background components installed even when their main window is closed.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu or by selecting its shield icon in the notification area.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under the protection area, select Manage providers. The page lists the antivirus or antispyware provider Windows is using and whether real-time protection is on.
- Write down the provider name and status before changing anything. If more than one product appears installed, distinguish the one marked active from products that are merely present.
When a non-Microsoft antivirus is installed and turned on, Microsoft Defender Antivirus normally turns itself off. After that product is removed, Defender should return to active mode automatically when no other provider remains. Automatic switching is expected behavior, but always verify it after the restart instead of assuming it happened.
How do I find every antivirus app installed?
Check both Windows Settings and the classic Control Panel list. An app can be missing from one view because of an incomplete installation record or an older installer.
Windows 11
- Select Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Use the search box for terms such as antivirus, security, protection, endpoint or the product name shown in Windows Security.
- Open the app’s three-dot menu and choose Uninstall. Do not remove a component merely because its name contains “security” until you have confirmed it belongs to the unwanted suite.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Search or scroll to the security product, select it and choose Uninstall.
- Complete the publisher’s removal wizard and restart if it requests one.
Control Panel fallback
If Settings does not list the program, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Select the antivirus entry, choose Uninstall or Change, and follow the publisher’s prompts. Control Panel is particularly useful for older desktop installers and products that registered themselves in the traditional Programs and Features list.

Should I remove a second antivirus program?
Usually, yes, when both products provide real-time protection. Microsoft warns that using more than one antivirus or antispyware program at the same time can decrease performance, make Windows unstable or cause unexpected restarts. Two scanners can inspect the same file activity, compete for access and duplicate background work.

Keep one clearly chosen real-time provider. If you prefer Microsoft Defender, remove the third-party product through its supported uninstaller. If you are keeping another trusted product, confirm that it reports active protection before relying on it and check that Defender has switched to its expected passive or off state.
Do not confuse an on-demand scanner with a second real-time antivirus. A tool used only for occasional manual scans generally does not create the same continuous file-access conflict, but read its settings carefully and disable any real-time shield you do not intend to run alongside your primary provider.
How do I remove antivirus software without leaving Windows unprotected?
Removing the active antivirus creates a protection gap until another provider is active. Microsoft describes the PC as unprotected during this transition, so plan the change rather than uninstalling first and investigating afterward.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Confirm the current provider. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection > Manage providers and record which product has real-time protection enabled.
- Choose the replacement. Decide whether Microsoft Defender should resume automatically or whether you are retaining a different trusted provider. Have any required sign-in, license or installation information available before starting.
- Close the antivirus interface and save work. The uninstaller may close applications or require an administrator confirmation. Do not interrupt it halfway through.
- Start the supported uninstall route. Use Windows 11’s Installed apps, Windows 10’s Apps & features, or Control Panel’s Programs and Features. Select the unwanted product and choose Uninstall.
- Complete the publisher’s wizard. Some products ask whether to keep settings, quarantine history or browser extensions. If your goal is a clean removal, select the option that removes the security product and its protection components, while reading each prompt so you do not remove unrelated software.
- Restart when requested. A reboot lets Windows unload filter drivers and security services that cannot be removed while they are running.
- Verify protection immediately. Reopen Windows Security and return to Manage providers. Confirm that Microsoft Defender or the replacement product reports active protection and that no warning says the device is unprotected.
- Recheck performance. Repeat the startup, File Explorer and idle-disk observations you recorded before removal. A meaningful comparison requires a restart and the same normal workload.
Do not manually delete folders, services or registry entries belonging to an antivirus. Security software often installs drivers and protected services; deleting files by hand can break Windows Security without removing the underlying components.
What should I do if the antivirus will not uninstall?
A failed removal is commonly caused by corrupted uninstall data, a service still running, a pending restart or an installer that no longer matches the installed version. Work through the supported options in order.
Try the other Windows uninstall location
If Settings fails, restart Windows and try Control Panel’s Programs and Features. If Control Panel fails, try the app entry in Settings. A reboot can release files that were locked during the first attempt.
Use Advanced options in Windows 11
For some apps, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and look for Repair or Reset. Repair can restore a damaged registration without deleting data; Reset is more drastic and can remove app data. These choices are not available for every desktop security program, and they may not replace the publisher’s own uninstaller.

Run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter
Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is intended for corrupted uninstall information and blocked removals. Follow its prompts to select the affected program and allow it to repair the product entry. Restart afterward, then check both the installed-app list and Windows Security.
Use the publisher’s official cleanup support
Some security products do not remove every driver or service through the normal wizard. Microsoft advises visiting the publisher’s website or contacting its technical support. Use only a cleanup utility distributed by that publisher for the exact product and version; avoid download sites that repackage removal tools.
Know when to stop
If the system becomes unstable, Windows Security reports no active provider, or the cleanup utility gives a driver or boot error, stop deleting files and seek the publisher’s support instructions. Keep the PC disconnected from risky browsing until a trusted provider is active, and restart only as the official procedure directs.
How do I verify that the old antivirus is really gone?
An uninstaller can remove the main application while leaving an update service, browser extension or driver. Verification should cover Windows’ provider status, the installed-program lists and visible background components.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Restart once more if the uninstaller requested it after a previous reboot.
- Open Task Manager and inspect Startup apps for a leftover entry clearly belonging to the removed suite. Disable only entries you can identify with confidence.
- Check your browser’s extensions and Windows notification area for remnants, but remove extensions through the browser’s own extension manager rather than deleting program files.
A remaining updater or support component is not automatically a second real-time antivirus. The decisive checks are whether it still registers as an active security provider and whether its services continue sustained scanning activity. If you cannot identify a component, use the publisher’s documentation instead of guessing.
Could malware be making the PC slow instead?
Yes. Malware can consume CPU and disk resources, alter browser behavior or interfere with security tools. Symptoms such as unexplained pop-ups, disabled protection, crashes, unfamiliar browser changes or new applications should be treated as possible infection rather than evidence that antivirus itself is the problem.
Start with a Quick scan
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and choose Quick scan. This is an efficient initial check of common locations and is appropriate when you need an immediate indication of a problem.

Use a Full scan when suspicion remains
From the same page, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and start it when you can tolerate lower performance. A full scan examines many more files, so the PC may feel slower while it runs; that temporary activity is different from an unexplained slowdown that continues after the scan finishes.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use offline or separate on-demand checks for difficult cases
Microsoft Defender Offline can scan after a restart, before normal Windows processes load, which helps with malware that hides while Windows is running. Microsoft Safety Scanner is another on-demand option for checking a suspected infection. Use current copies and follow the on-screen instructions; do not run several real-time products simultaneously just to obtain another scan.
After a detection, follow Windows Security’s removal or quarantine recommendation and restart if requested. If protection settings remain disabled or the symptoms return, obtain help from Microsoft support or a qualified technician rather than repeatedly uninstalling security software.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if the PC is still slow after antivirus removal?
Persistent slowness means the antivirus was not the only cause, or the removal did not change the workload that matters. Microsoft identifies several other common contributors.
Review startup apps
In Task Manager, open Startup apps and sort by Startup impact. Disable nonessential programs that you recognize and can start manually later. Leave security, hardware and accessibility components enabled unless their publisher’s documentation says otherwise.
Recommended Free Tools
Check free storage
Low disk space can reduce responsiveness and interfere with updates. Open Settings > System > Storage to see which categories consume space. Remove temporary files and unused applications through Windows’ supported tools, keeping personal files and recovery data you may need.
Install pending updates and update drivers from trusted sources
Open Settings > Windows Update and apply available Windows updates, restarting as requested. For hardware drivers, use Windows Update or the computer and component manufacturer’s support channel rather than generic driver-download sites.
Best Value
Check the hardware ceiling
An older processor, limited memory or a worn storage drive can remain a bottleneck after software cleanup. If Task Manager shows memory pressure or the disk at high active time during ordinary work, consider hardware diagnostics and a realistic workload assessment. Antivirus removal cannot make hardware faster, and running without protection is not an appropriate workaround.
How should I compare performance before and after removal?
Use repeatable observations instead of an unsupported percentage claim. Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal benchmark for how many seconds or how much CPU an antivirus should consume, because results vary by hardware, Windows edition, scan settings and file workload.
| Check | Before removal | After reboot and verification |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in to usable desktop | Record the approximate time and whether the disk light remains busy | Repeat under the same startup conditions |
| Idle CPU and disk | Observe Task Manager for several minutes with no active task | Compare sustained activity, not a brief scan spike |
| Everyday actions | Open File Explorer and the applications you normally use | Repeat the same sequence after protection is confirmed |
| Security status | Record the provider and real-time state | Confirm the intended provider is active and no warning appears |
If responsiveness improves only during an antivirus scan and then returns to normal, schedule intensive scans for times you are not working. If it does not improve at all, investigate startup software, storage, updates, malware and hardware instead of removing additional security components.
How can I avoid antivirus conflicts in the future?
- Keep one provider responsible for continuous, real-time antivirus protection.
- Before installing a replacement, check whether its installer will disable or remove the existing provider.
- Restart after installation or removal when prompted so Windows can reload security drivers cleanly.
- Verify the active provider in Windows Security rather than relying on a tray icon.
- Use on-demand scanners selectively and check that they do not enable a second real-time shield.
- Keep Windows, the security product and its malware definitions updated.
- Do not disable protection permanently to make a performance problem disappear; find the underlying cause.
This approach separates a genuine duplicate-provider conflict from a normal scan, a malware infection or a broader Windows performance problem. It also preserves the protection Microsoft expects to be present after a non-Microsoft antivirus is removed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Windows Defender turn on automatically after I uninstall another antivirus?
Microsoft says Defender should turn on automatically when a non-Microsoft antivirus is removed and no other provider remains. Still open Windows Security and check Manage providers after restarting, because an incomplete uninstall or another registered provider can change the result.
Can I uninstall antivirus while offline?
You can begin the removal without an internet connection, but plan the transition first and avoid risky browsing until a trusted provider is active. If you need a publisher cleanup utility or updated malware definitions, download it from the official source before disconnecting.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does my computer slow down only during a full antivirus scan?
A full scan reads a large number of files, so temporary CPU and disk activity is expected. Run it when you are not working, then judge the PC after the scan has finished and Windows has been restarted; persistent idle activity points to another issue.
Is it safe to delete an antivirus folder manually?
No. Antivirus products can install protected services, drivers and file-system filters that are not removed by deleting a folder. Use Windows’ uninstaller, the publisher’s official cleanup utility or the publisher’s support procedure instead.
