How to Find and Interpret a Game’s AI Disclosure on Steam

Open the game’s Steam store page and read its AI disclosure, which Valve says contains much of the information developers submit in the Steamworks Content Survey. The statement tells you whether player-consumed content was created ahead of release or generated while the game runs, and may identify areas such as art, sound, dialogue, narrative, or localization.

Use the wording as a description of reported use, not as a complete audit or a quality verdict. Steam does not prescribe one universal position for the notice, and an absent or broad statement does not prove that no AI tools were used.

Where can I find a game’s AI disclosure on Steam?

Start with the game’s public Steam store page. Valve says much of the developer’s Content Survey disclosure is included there, but its public documentation does not promise a fixed position that looks identical on every page or client.

  1. Open Steam and navigate to the game’s store page from the Store, a search result, or the game’s Library page.
  2. Read the page’s information panels and descriptions while scrolling through the store listing. Look for wording about generative AI, AI-generated content, or how AI is used in the game.
  3. On a desktop browser, use the page’s Find command (Ctrl+F on Windows/Linux or Command+F on macOS) and search for AI, generative, or artificial intelligence. This finds visible text but cannot reveal information that is not published on that page.
  4. On the Steam mobile app or a mobile browser, scroll through the store listing and expand collapsed information areas. Labels and placement can differ from the desktop site.
  5. Read the developer’s complete wording rather than relying on a short label, curator tag, screenshot, or search snippet.

Steam’s own announcement says it will include “much of your disclosure on the Steam store page for your game, so customers can also understand how the game uses AI.” You can read that announcement on Steamworks Development. The underlying survey definitions are in Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey documentation.

What does Steam’s AI disclosure actually cover?

The relevant part of the Content Survey concerns generative AI used to create content that ships with a game and is consumed by players. Valve gives examples including artwork, sound, narrative, and localization. A disclosure can also refer to other player-facing material, such as code or additional assets, depending on what the developer reports.

The survey is not primarily asking whether a studio used an AI tool to work faster. Valve explicitly says, “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” A team could use an AI-powered coding assistant, search tool, or production aid without that fact alone being what the store disclosure is intended to describe. The important question is whether AI-created material is part of what players receive or experience.

Content that ships in the playable game

When the statement refers to game assets or player-facing content, it may cover visuals, interface elements, music, sound effects, voices, written story, dialogue, or translated text. These are examples, not a required checklist: one disclosure may name a single asset type while another uses a broad phrase such as “AI-generated assets.”

Store, community, or promotional material

A developer may specify that AI was used for a store-page image, trailer element, community post, or other marketing material rather than for content inside the game. Keep that scope separate from the playable product. Valve’s announcement says much of the submitted information appears on the store page, so the page itself can contain information about more than one kind of content.

What is the difference between pre-generated and live-generated AI?

Pre-generated content is made during development and shipped with the game. Live-generated content is created while the game is running, often in response to a player’s actions or input. This timing distinction is the fastest way to understand the disclosure.

Category When the content is made What the player receives Additional information Valve requires
Pre-generated During development, before release or an update is shipped Fixed or preselected content included in the game, such as art, sound, writing, code, or other assets The developer describes the relevant use in the Content Survey
Live-generated While the game is running New content produced during play, potentially in response to player input The developer must also describe guardrails intended to prevent illegal content

How to read a pre-generated disclosure

A pre-generated statement usually means an AI tool contributed to material prepared in advance and packaged with the game. It does not mean the game continuously calls an AI service, and it does not establish that every asset was generated by AI. Look for the nouns and qualifiers that follow the category: “concept art,” “backgrounds,” “voice lines,” or “localization” convey more than an unspecified reference to “assets.”

How to read a live-generated disclosure

Live-generated use means the game creates content during execution. Examples could include generated dialogue, images, quests, or other responses, but the disclosure should be your authority for what that particular game does. Valve requires developers to tell it what safeguards they use to prevent illegal content. A public store statement may mention safeguards only briefly, so do not assume that a short description lets you independently verify their effectiveness.

How should I interpret the developer’s wording?

Read the statement in four passes: content, location, timing, and specificity. This prevents a broad label from being mistaken for a claim that the entire game was made by AI.

1. Identify the content

Note exactly what the developer names. Separate visual art from interface graphics, music from sound effects, recorded voices from text dialogue, and in-game writing from store copy. If the statement lists several types, treat each as a separate reported use rather than assuming the same process produced them all.

2. Identify where it appears

Ask whether the disclosure concerns material inside the downloadable game, content generated during play, or store and promotional material. A statement limited to marketing assets should not be read as a claim about the game’s characters, levels, or story. Conversely, a statement about shipped assets concerns the product players install even if the material was created before launch.

3. Identify when it is generated

“Pre-generated” points to work completed during development and delivered as part of the game. “Live-generated” points to output made after launch or during a play session. Updates can change what is shipped, so read any version or update qualifiers the developer includes.

4. Measure the statement’s specificity

Compare a broad phrase such as “AI used for assets” with a detailed explanation naming the asset, its purpose, and whether it is pre-generated or live-generated. The detailed statement gives you more information; the broad one gives you less. Lack of detail is not proof that undisclosed categories are present, and detail is not an independent certification of quality.

Does a Steam AI disclosure mean the whole game was made by AI?

No. The disclosure identifies reported AI use in particular content or production areas; it does not say that a game was made entirely by AI. A game can contain a small number of AI-assisted textures, a single generated voice line, or a live dialogue feature alongside extensive human-authored code and assets.

Do not infer the opposite either. A statement about one named asset does not prove that no other development tools were used, and Valve’s documentation does not establish that the public display is a complete inventory of every AI experiment or efficiency tool used by a studio. The safest reading is narrow: accept the categories and scope the developer actually describes.

How much confidence should I place in the disclosure?

Valve reviews AI-generated output during its pre-release process under the same general content and marketing-consistency expectations applied to other content. Completing the survey does not exempt a game from Steam’s content rules.

The disclosure itself remains a developer-provided description. It is not an independent audit, a quality rating, a statement that the use is ethically acceptable, or a recommendation to buy or avoid the game. Those limits follow from the documented submission and review process: Valve checks the release under its rules, while the developer supplies the account of how AI is used.

What the disclosure can tell you

  • Which category of generation the developer reports: pre-generated, live-generated, or both.
  • Which content types and locations the developer chooses to name.
  • Whether the developer describes live-generation safeguards against illegal content.
  • How specific or general the public explanation is.

What it cannot establish by itself

  • That every AI use in development has been listed publicly.
  • That a named asset was produced entirely by AI rather than edited or combined by people.
  • That live-generation guardrails are effective in every possible interaction.
  • That the game’s artistic quality, labor practices, licensing, or price is good or bad.

What if the disclosure is missing, vague, or out of date?

An absent visible statement does not prove that no AI was used. Valve’s public materials explain the disclosure process but do not establish that the store display is a complete independent inventory of every development use. The page layout and the developer’s wording can also change.

When the wording seems too broad

Use the statement’s limits literally. “AI-generated assets” tells you that the developer reports some asset use, but not which asset, how much of the game it affects, or whether the content is live-generated. Check the game’s official announcements, patch notes, or developer FAQ for additional explanation, while treating those statements as supplementary rather than replacing the Steam disclosure.

When the wording appears outdated

Check the current store page first, then look for a newer announcement from the developer. Valve’s Content Survey FAQ says that after a build and store page are approved for release, some survey answers cannot be edited without first contacting Steam Support. That restriction can explain why an older statement remains visible after a change, but Steam’s public documentation does not describe a universal public change-history system.

When you find a community label

Community curator pages can collect examples or apply their own labels, but they are not Valve’s policy or a substitute for the developer’s store-page disclosure. For example, a curator listing such as this community example should be treated as commentary that may help you find a discussion, not as proof of what Steam’s survey records.

How can I use the disclosure when deciding whether to play?

Use it as one factual input in your own decision, especially if you care about the origin of art, voices, writing, or dynamic interactions. A practical reading takes less than a minute:

  1. Record the scope. Write down whether the statement concerns in-game content, live generation, store material, or a combination.
  2. Record the type. Note every named category such as art, music, voice, narrative, dialogue, or localization.
  3. Record the timing. Mark pre-generated, live-generated, or both.
  4. Check safeguards. For live generation, see whether the developer explains controls intended to block illegal content.
  5. Separate facts from judgments. The disclosure tells you what use is reported; your views about quality, consent, labor, licensing, or aesthetics require separate evidence.
  6. Recheck after major updates. New shipped or live-generated features can change the practical scope, while the public statement may not update immediately.

This method avoids two common errors: treating one disclosed asset as evidence that the entire game is automated, and treating a vague or absent statement as proof that no AI tools were involved.

Which official sources explain Steam’s policy?

Valve’s primary reference is the Steamworks Content Survey, which defines the survey categories and explains the review and editing process. Valve’s Steamworks Development announcement, AI Content on Steam, published January 10, 2024, explains that much of the submitted disclosure is shown on store pages. Read both if you need the policy context behind a particular game’s wording.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Steam list the AI model or company used to generate a game’s content?

Not necessarily. Valve’s public category descriptions focus on the content, where it appears, and whether it is pre-generated or live-generated; they do not require every store statement to name a model, vendor, or training source. If those details matter to you, look for a separate developer statement.

Can AI used only for coding or workflow automation appear in the store disclosure?

Valve says efficiency gains from AI-powered development tools are not the focus of this survey section. The disclosure is aimed at generative AI content that ships with the game or is created while players are using it, so a private productivity tool may not be represented.

Why can a game’s Steam AI wording remain unchanged after an update?

Valve’s Content Survey FAQ says some answers cannot be edited after the build and store page are approved without contacting Steam Support. Check the current page and the developer’s dated announcements for context, because Steam does not document a universal public revision history for these statements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Steam community AI labels official Valve disclosures?

No. Community curator pages are user commentary and may use their own criteria. Treat them as leads for further reading and rely on the game’s store-page statement and Valve’s Content Survey documentation for the official disclosure framework.
