To check a Steam game’s public AI disclosure, open the official store page for the exact title and search for the heading AI Generated Content Disclosure. Read the developer’s complete statement, note what it says was generated (such as artwork, sound, text, localization, code, store material, or a runtime feature), and record the date you checked. A missing or vague section is uncertainty—not proof that the game used no AI. Steam disclosures describe what the developer reported, so claims beyond that wording should remain unconfirmed unless the developer or publisher has made a separate attributable statement.
Where is the AI Generated Content Disclosure on Steam?
The disclosure is normally on the game’s official Steam store page, not in a user review, community discussion, or a general search result. Valve says its developer Content Survey includes an AI disclosure section and that much of the submitted information is displayed on the store page so customers can understand how the game uses AI.

Open the page for the exact app
Search Steam for the game, then open its store listing rather than a soundtrack, demo, bundle, playtest, or similarly named sequel. Check the title, developer, and app identity before recording anything. A studio can have different disclosures for different products, and a bundle page may not describe every included game.
Search for the heading
Use your browser’s find command (usually Ctrl+F on Windows or Linux, or Command+F on macOS) and search for AI Generated Content Disclosure. On a phone, use the browser’s “Find in page” option. If the search finds no result, scroll through the page once as well: dynamic page elements, regional notices, or a temporarily blocked script can prevent an in-page search from matching visible text.

Read beyond the label
The heading alone does not tell you the scope. Read every sentence underneath it, including qualifications about human review, the development period, content shipped with the game, store or marketing assets, and any generation that happens while the game is running. Quote or closely paraphrase the developer’s wording instead of converting a broad statement into a narrower claim.
How do I check a Steam game’s disclosure step by step?
- Identify the product. Confirm the game’s exact name, app page, developer or publisher, and whether you are looking at the main release, an early-access listing, a demo, or a separate edition.
- Open the official store page. Use the page reached from Steam’s own search or the developer’s official Steam link. Avoid treating a third-party database as the disclosure itself.
- Find the heading. Search the page for AI Generated Content Disclosure. Expand any collapsed “About” or legal-information area if the page presents one.
- Copy the full statement. Preserve wording that identifies the medium (art, sound, narrative, voice, localization, code, or other material), when the AI was used, and whether people reviewed or edited the result.
- Classify its scope. Decide whether the statement concerns development-time or pre-generated content, store or marketing material, content players receive in the game, or live generation during play. One disclosure can cover more than one category.
- Record the check. Save the game identity, page URL, exact wording or a faithful quotation, and the date checked. Steam pages and policy language can change, so a dated record is important.
- Mark unsupported conclusions. If the wording is missing, ambiguous, or does not answer the specific question you are investigating, label that point unconfirmed. Look for a separately attributable developer or publisher statement before drawing a broader conclusion.
This process answers what the developer publicly disclosed. It does not independently audit every tool, asset, contractor, or internal experiment used by a studio.
What do Steam’s pre-generated and live-generated AI categories mean?
Valve’s policy separates AI content made during development from content generated while the game runs. That distinction matters because a game can ship with AI-assisted assets yet have no AI system that creates new material for players in real time.
| Category | What it describes | What to look for in the statement |
|---|---|---|
| Development-time or pre-generated content | Material produced with AI before release and then included in the shipped game. | The asset or medium named, such as images, models, dialogue, music, sound effects, voice, text, or localization; any editing or review the developer says occurred. |
| Store or marketing material | AI-produced material associated with the store listing or promotion rather than content inside the playable build. | References to screenshots, key art, trailers, descriptions, promotional copy, or other page and campaign assets. |
| Content in the game | AI-generated material that players consume as part of the game, whether prepared before launch or included in an update. | The player-facing medium and the part of the game where it appears. |
| Live-generated content | Material created while the game is running in response to play, input, or an online service. | What is generated during play, when it happens, whether an external service is involved, and the safeguards the developer describes. |
For live generation, Valve requires developers to describe guardrails intended to prevent illegal output. A generic “AI” label is not evidence that such safeguards exist or that they are effective; only the developer’s stated measures can be recorded from the disclosure.
What does Steam’s current AI wording cover in 2026?
A clarification reported in January 2026 says the current focus is AI used to create content that ships with the game and is consumed by players. It also includes store-page and marketing material. The clarification says efficiency gains from AI-powered development tools are not the focus of this section.
Player-facing and associated material
Read the statement for explicit references to artwork, sound, narrative, localization, voice, or other text that reaches players. A disclosure about a generated character portrait is different from one about generated dialogue, and both differ from a disclosure limited to store art.

Workflow tools and productivity
A developer may use an AI coding assistant, debugging aid, translation helper, or brainstorming tool without that fact by itself showing that generated content shipped to players. The Steam section’s current emphasis is the resulting content, not every efficiency tool used to make the game. If a developer says only that AI helped with development, report that statement accurately and do not infer a player-facing asset or runtime feature.
Marketing disclosure versus in-game use
A store-page disclosure can cover marketing art or other associated material even when the game contains no runtime AI and no AI-generated asset in its playable content. Conversely, a statement about in-game assets does not automatically mean the store graphics were generated the same way. Keep each medium and location separate in your notes.
How can I tell whether a Steam game used generative AI?
Start with the developer’s own wording, then test whether it answers the precise claim you want to make. “Used AI” is too broad to be a useful conclusion unless you specify what was generated, when, and where players encounter it.
- Identify the medium: artwork, 3D assets, sound, music, voice, narrative, dialogue, localization, code, store copy, key art, or another asset.
- Identify the time: during development, before release, in a later update, or during each play session.
- Identify the destination: the shipped game, a downloadable extra, the store page, advertising, or an external service.
- Identify the human role: editing, selection, approval, moderation, or review, but only if the statement actually says so.
- Separate reported facts from inference: write “the developer says…” for the disclosure and reserve “unconfirmed” for everything it does not establish.
For example, a statement that names AI-generated store artwork supports a claim about marketing material. It does not, on its own, support a claim that the game generates dialogue during play. Likewise, a statement that an AI tool assisted coding does not establish that players receive generated art, text, or audio.
What should I do if the AI disclosure is missing or vague?
Treat the absence or ambiguity as an evidence limit. A missing disclosure cannot establish that no AI was used, and a broad sentence cannot be stretched to cover a medium or feature it never names.
If no heading appears
- Confirm that you opened the official store page for the correct app and edition.
- Reload the page, disable a script-blocking extension temporarily, or try a second browser if page content appears incomplete.
- Check again later and date the new check, because store information can be updated.
- If the section remains absent, record “no public AI Generated Content Disclosure located on the page on [date]” in your private notes; do not turn that into “the game used no AI.”
If the wording is broad
Quote the sentence and list the unanswered questions: Which asset? Which medium? Which release or update? Was it shipped content, store material, or a live feature? Mark each unanswered point unconfirmed rather than filling gaps with assumptions.

If another source makes a stronger claim
Look for an attributable statement from the developer or publisher and distinguish it from an independent allegation, a forum post, or an automated database entry. The Steam page remains the primary place to read the developer’s public disclosure, but it is not a complete audit of studio activity.
How do I document a disclosure so the result can be checked later?
A short evidence record makes your conclusion reproducible and prevents a later policy change from being mistaken for the wording you originally saw.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Record | What to capture | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game identity | Exact title, edition or app type, developer or publisher, and store-page URL. | Prevents a demo, bundle, sequel, or regional listing from being confused with the main game. |
| Check date | Calendar date, and time zone if the timing is important. | Disclosures and policy language may change. |
| Statement | Full text or a faithful quotation, including qualifiers and headings. | Preserves the developer’s scope instead of a shortened paraphrase. |
| Classification | Development/pre-generated, store or marketing, in-game content, live generation, or more than one. | Makes the conclusion precise. |
| Open questions | Any medium, date, feature, or safeguard the statement does not specify. | Stops uncertainty from being reported as fact. |
| Corroboration | An attributable developer or publisher statement, if one is needed for a point the page does not answer. | Keeps independent verification separate from the Steam disclosure. |
Store the page capture or quotation in a note that cannot be silently overwritten. If you publish a result, show the check date and explain whether your wording describes a developer claim or an independently verified fact.
How should I evaluate live-generated AI features?
Live generation deserves a separate check because the system may create new material after release and during play. Record the trigger, output, service dependency, and safeguards rather than treating “AI-powered” as a complete description.
Questions to answer from the disclosure
- What does the game generate: dialogue, images, quests, voices, levels, or another type of output?
- When does generation occur: character creation, every session, user prompts, an online event, or a particular mode?
- Does the game send player input or generated output to an external service?
- What moderation, filtering, prompt restrictions, reporting, or human review does the developer say is used?
- What happens when the system fails, produces unsuitable output, or the service is unavailable?
Valve’s policy calls for a description of guardrails intended to prevent illegal output. Do not infer the existence, coverage, or effectiveness of those controls from a general AI label, a marketing slogan, or the mere presence of a disclosure.
Does an AI coding tool count as a Steam AI disclosure?
Not automatically. The January 2026 clarification places the section’s emphasis on content that ships with the game and is consumed by players, plus store and marketing material; efficiency gains from AI development tools are not the focus. A coding assistant can therefore be relevant background without proving that the game includes AI-generated player-facing content.

If the developer explicitly connects the coding tool to a shipped feature or asset, record that connection and the named medium. Otherwise, keep “AI-assisted development” separate from claims about generated art, sound, narrative, localization, or runtime behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I compare the AI disclosures of two Steam games?
Compare like with like: scope, medium, timing, and specificity. A longer statement is not necessarily broader, and a short statement is not necessarily evidence of less AI use.
| Comparison axis | Game A | Game B | What a fair comparison asks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scope | Record the disclosed category or categories. | Record the disclosed category or categories. | Is it store/marketing material, in-game assets, live generation, or development-only information? |
| Medium | List each named medium. | List each named medium. | Are the statements about art, sound, text, voice, localization, code, or another medium? |
| Timing | Note development, release, update, or runtime. | Note development, release, update, or runtime. | Do both statements describe the same period? |
| Specificity | Quote the feature or asset named. | Quote the feature or asset named. | Does either statement leave the destination or player experience unclear? |
| Live safeguards | List the controls the developer describes, or “not stated.” | List the controls the developer describes, or “not stated.” | Are guardrails described for content generated during play? |
Keep developer claims separate from independently verified facts in the comparison. If one page says “AI-assisted assets” and the other identifies a live dialogue system, those are not equivalent disclosures and should not be scored as though they measured the same thing.
What does the AI Transparency Index number tell me?
The AI Transparency Index reported 26,450 tracked disclosures in 2026. Its categories include development only, store or marketing only, content in the game, and live AI during play.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That figure is context, not a prevalence rate. The index is continuously updated, uses its own classification process, and warns that its count is not a census of all Steam games. Missing or unclear statements still cannot establish that a particular game did—or did not—use AI. For an individual title, the dated Steam page and the developer’s exact wording remain more relevant than the aggregate count.
What common mistakes lead to a wrong conclusion?
- Searching the wrong page: A bundle, demo, soundtrack, or sequel may have different disclosure text.
- Stopping at the heading: The label does not reveal which medium or time period is covered.
- Equating coding assistance with generated content: Workflow efficiency is not the same as a player-facing asset or runtime feature.
- Equating store art with in-game AI: Marketing material can be disclosed even when the playable content has no generated assets.
- Assuming silence means no AI: A missing section is uncertainty, not a negative finding.
- Inferring safeguards: A generic AI label does not prove that live-generation controls exist or work effectively.
- Dropping qualifiers: Removing words such as “during development,” “for marketing,” or “in a test” can materially change the claim.
- Failing to date the check: A later edit to the store page can make an undated quotation impossible to interpret.
What is the most defensible way to report the result?
Use a narrow sentence tied to the page and date: “On [date], the game’s Steam store page disclosed [named medium or feature] as [category].” Add “The statement does not specify [unanswered point]” when a reader could otherwise infer more than the page supports. If no section is visible, say that no public disclosure was located on the checked page at that time, not that the game used no AI.
Best Value
This wording preserves the difference between a developer’s public claim, an independent verification, and an unanswered question. It also remains useful if the developer later changes the disclosure or Valve revises its policy categories.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Steam AI disclosure change after a game launches?
Yes. Developers can update store-page information as content changes or as policy language evolves. Keep the original quotation and check date so a later version is not mistaken for what was visible at launch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does a disclosure prove that every AI-generated asset is identified?
No. It is the developer’s stated scope, not a forensic inventory of every tool or contractor. Treat unnamed media and undocumented workflow steps as unconfirmed.
Are AI-generated mods covered by the game’s Steam disclosure?
Not necessarily. A store disclosure normally describes the developer’s game and associated store or marketing material, while a separately distributed mod may have its own creator and documentation. Check the mod author’s statement rather than extending the base game’s wording.
Why might two editions of the same game show different AI information?
Separate app pages can represent different releases, demos, or regional products, and their content may not be identical. Compare the exact app identity and page version before treating the disclosures as inconsistent.
What should I cite when the Steam page has no disclosure at all?
Cite the exact store-page URL, identify the game and edition, and state the date you checked without a matching heading. If you need to discuss alleged AI use, add an attributable developer or publisher statement and label the two pieces of evidence separately.
